Goron_3 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 It's a full retail release, no one's going to buy Halo 3 (first hand) once the 'expansion pack' is out. It's pretty much a slight expansion of the single player game. Besides, Halo 3 sales are pretty low atm, if anything ODST will help sales of it. I mean, since gears 2 has been out i know a few people who've gone out and got the original.

But according to independent sales data released today by the NPD Group, the Wii™ console from Nintendo did just that, even during these economic times, with 2008 unit sales of 10.17 million. The Nintendo DS™ portable handheld system came in a close second, with 2008 unit sales of 9.95 million. Each of them broke the previous yearly unit sales record set in 2007 by Nintendo DS with sales of 8.52 million. Consequently, Wii represented 55% of all next generation home console sales in 2008, while Nintendo DS claimed 72% of all portable system sales in 2008. “Our type of entertainment has now moved to the point where there is no longer a question that if you offer consumers an expanded definition of what a video game can be, and deliver that idea with quality and affordability in mind, millions of new people will start playing video games,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Concepts like Wii Fit, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band never would have seemed feasible just a few years ago, and now they’re driving growth for our the entire industry.” NPD data released for December and all of 2008 also included the following: * The industry’s top 4 selling games of 2008 were: Wii Play™ at No. 1, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 2, Wii Fit™ at No.3, and Super Smash Brothers™ Brawl, at No. 4. * Industry annual revenues jumped 19% in 2008 over 2007, and Nintendo products were responsible for 99% of those additional retail dollars. * Nintendo DS set another industry record for system sales in any month, with 3.04 million units sold in December. * Wii broke its own monthly record, set in December 2007, by selling 2.14 million units last month. * In December, Nintendo titles filled 20 of the top 30 spots on the best-seller list. Six games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10, including Wii Music™ for Wii (No. 9), which has now sold 865,000 units following its launch in October 2008, and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS (No. 7), which has sold a total of 4.3 million units 38 months after launch. * Activision’s Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero® World Tour, and MTV Games/EA’s* Rock Band Special Edition Bundle all sold more units on Nintendo platforms than any other platforms in 2008. * More 3rd party units were sold for Wii than any other home consoles in December for the 2nd consecutive month. * For the year, more than 132 million games were sold in America for play on Nintendo systems. IGN: Wii controlled five of the Top 10 slots for the month. Wii Play (which includes a controller) continued its reign at the top. More interestingly is the shelf life of Wii Fit, a $90 game that released last May and still sold almost a million copies in December. Also of note, Guitar Hero World Tour apparently sold 850,000 copies in December, just for Wii. It's clear that the franchise officially performs best on Nintendo's system. Perhaps most shocking of all are the best-sellers of the year. According to NPD data, Nintendo owned the top four slots in 2008 with Wii Play (5.2 million), Mario Kart Wii (5.0 million), Wii Fit (4.53 million) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (4.17 million). These titles outsold Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360 (3.29 million), Call of Duty 4: World at War 360 (2.75 million), Gears of War 2 (2.31 million), Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 (1.89 million), Madden NFL 09 360 (1.87 million) and finally, Mario Kart DS (1.65 million). By the way, Nintendo also sold 865,000 copies of Wii Music in 2008, we're sorry to report. IGN: Consumers Prefer Gimped Rock Band The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions of Rock Band (released in June 2008 and December 2007, respectively) were mere shadows of their former Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 selves. Most of the key features had been gutted, there was no online play or downloadable content, no character creation, and they weren't too easy on the eyes. The masses didn't seem to mind, though, as the Wii and PS2 versions of the original game outsold both Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the other systems last year. According to data from the NPD group, the Wii version of Rock Band was the franchise's best-selling SKU last year with over a million units sold. The PlayStation 2 version was right behind it. Rock Band Wii and PS2 were the 29th and 31st best-selling games of the year, respectively. The original Xbox 360 Rock Band came in at just under 800,000 units. Rock Band 2 on 360, available since September, sold just under 600,000 units. The NPD data isn't clear which SKUs are Special Editions and which are the game only. Rock Band 2 on Wii was released right at the tail end of the year and moved just over 150,000 units.
Zechs Merquise Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Actually I think GTA IV has outsold MK (combining sales obv). And are you counting wii play in that list? Interesting fact. The amount of money software generated in December 08 ALONE is more than the money it generated in 1998 throughout the WHOLE year. Mental. I think you'll find that Mario Kart Wii has sold more than GTAIV's combined sales! And it's easily sold more than either of the two versions have alone. And YES I am counting Wii Play, as it's still selling. You can't just discount it! It was Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy. And er, it's hard to tell who'll win out. Probs SMG as the new Halo thingy will kill Halo 3 sales. Yes, the argument was SMG VS Halo 3, and so far Halo 3 is still in lead, it's sold ~8.9m whilst SMG has sold ~7.9m. The gap has been narrowing all the time, whether SMG will go on to surpass Halo 3 is still up for debate.

Well I can discount it...It's a wiimote that comes bundled with a few minigames lol. If microsoft bundled a minigame or 2 with Xbox live arcade points, would you really go round counting them

Try selling Xbox live arcade points with a minigame that costs more than the points alone.

dazzybee Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 ROck Band 2 shipped 150,000 units. Didn't it get released a few days before xmas? If so, that's some big sales. Loving the music genre, I'm very pleased to see the Wii seeing the strongest sales in these titles. I just wish the developers/publishers put as much DLC love in! Thought his will change very quickly!
Goron_3 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 What Dante said lol You're clearly forgetting how many Wii's are sold a month and how many of those will probably buy 2-3 extra controllers with them. Anyways I was working yesterday and we put about 30 Wii's through the till (this is at John Lewis mind) and sold about 20 Wii Fit's. Judging by the people buying I'm willing to garauntee that of those 30 Wii's, about 20 of them won't be played within a few months. Seriously most comments I get when i put a Wii through go along the lines of 'It'll be a bit of fun for a while' or with Wii fit it's usually like 'it'll keep the kids amused for a few minutes'. Argh i can't believe there are people rich enough to just buy the Wii and see it as a toy argh. We sell about 20-30 wii games aswell and if we EVER sell any of them it's just Mario Kart. I don't think the people we sell them to even care that you can buy other games.

Look, when ever you have a system that sells so well you're always going to have a much lower attach rate because people just buy the console for casual usage, which means a couple of games.

Goron_3 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 What is your point? You work at John Lewis for christ sake! Obviously the people who would buy a Wii there are not the typical gamer!! My point is that it's amazing how so many people just buy the wii as an impulse buy, especially over christmas period when everyone was low on cash. I think it was the best selling thing after iPods obviously. I wasn't dissing the wii at all, i'm just saying how amazing it is how many you can shift. I manager to persuade a few couples onto buying it, was pretty easy. I do hate the 'expensive toy' comments it gets quite a lot though that said it's their loss. Sold A LOT of DS lites aswell actually, maybe around 20 all with copies of Brain Training. Oh and one other thing, how many PS3s did you shift? Because who shop at John Lewis are going to want PS3's because...? Erm maybe around 2-3. Put through a lot of 360's though, guessing they were arcades though because we're sold out of the Premium.
Shino Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Being an impulsive buy doesn't change anything, the same happened with all the consoles that lead previous generations. Hopefully some of those people and they're kids will grow up to be gamers.

I've just looked at the attach rates for the best selling PS2 games compared to the best selling Wii games. As far as games like Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii are concerned the attach rates are much higher than that of the best selling PS2 software. The reason I asked about the PS3 sales was because I was wondering if the great PS3 comeback (as predicted by nerd and fanboys everywhere) had begun. Obviously not yet!

Tbh though PS3 is still for early adopters, especially at that price. It's on the market atm simply to stop Microsoft from getting all the sales. PS3 will sell a bucketload, especially 2-3 years down the line when the price is right down. I mean lets face it, a $200-250 PS3 is a very tempting offer. Edit: Don't worry I'm not a PS3 fanboy btw Not really a fan of the console atm.

I think GTA III's attatch rate to Wii Fit / Mario Kart was similiar when it launched. It does seem odd comparing the top selling games, nor do I really see the point 0_o. PS2's attatch rate fall is generally more attributed to the pre-owned market, no one buys PS2 games first hand now and it was pretty much like that into it's later life cycle. Wii's not been heavily effected by this yet but it does pose some interesting problems for the consoles future years.

Are Wii consoles still difficult to get hold of, so people are trying less obvious places? I dunno. But, just taking a look at the John Lewis website, and there's not really a great deal of choice there. If you're going to be making judgements on what games Wii Owners buy, you'll probably be best off looking at stores like GAME or Gamestation. Shop around, and you can get games for cheaper. That's what I do. Maybe other customers do that, too. Out of curiosity, what 360 or PS3 games were being sold?
