Looking ahead, I think the profit will fall sharply, not necessarily because of less sales (probably that too tho), but mainly because of the strength of Japanese yen. It's on a 13 year high and went up a big time against all major currencies in the last several weeks. I think the biggest was vs Australian dollars, at 45% or something. That's ridiculous, but this sort of price hike happens with Japanese yen, especially when the times are bad outside Japan. It's a brickhouse currency.

Obviously it won't stay that way forever, but I generally think yen will be generally higher in the foreseeable future, resulting in less profit for all Japanese exporters including Nintendo. That is, unless the G7 intervenes to stop yen from rising. I think that's likely if this trend continues.

Well I'd just like to congratulate Microsoft on making some money for a change. Nintendo seems to have done quite well even during the darker years. But I suppose they've always had more out there than everyone else which meant they could pick up the slack in other markets.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier:

Overall

"The video games industry continues to set a blistering sales pace, overall, with total month revenues 10% higher than last November, even with 7 less days of post-Thanksgiving shopping this year as compared to last."

"With $16B realized for the year so far through November, the industry is still on pace to achieve total year revenues of $22B in the U.S."

"One reason for the continued strength of the industry compared to other forms of entertainment comes from a number of sources. Certainly, the expanded audience for gaming due to the availability of a wider variety of compelling content is a strong contributor. Economic factors are also at play given that a video game is a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment for the hours of value it provides. Our Consumer Spending Indicator shows that video games is the category consumers are least likely to cut back on this holiday."

Hardware

"All three of the newer generation console systems have something to brag about. The expanded supply of Wii systems at retail was clearly evident in the sales figures this month. The 360 realized a nice unit sales bump over last November and the PS3 year-to-date unit sales growth is impressive. It's clear there can be more multiple victors this generation and while price is certainly a strong factor, particularly as the current economic situation continues to prevail, the most important factor that will drive success in 2009 will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry."

Software

"Reinforcing that at this point in the cycle, content is once again king, year-to-date games sales growth is 31%. The top-10 list of games shows just how varied the most popular games have become."

"Gears of War II certainly didn't disappoint, achieving a 13% attach rate to the Xbox 360 install base. These are the types of platform exclusive games that are so important to the continued strength of any given platform."

"After a soft introduction last month, Wii Music came back to score a spot on the top 10 list for the month. I think this is a testament to the power of a comprehensive marketing campaign and the very strong brand equity that the Wii platform enjoys."

"We would be remiss not to point out the strength of PC game sales this month as lead by the release of the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack. Wrath of the Lich King sold over 1.4 million units in the U.S. during its debut month at retail."

mental sales!

PS3 sales are really bad. Its crazy how a machine can sell 2m with no new big releases to drive hardware sales. L4D beat resistance 2. :)

Wii and DS sales are just out of this world. So did Call of Duty 5 bomb on the Wii? Would like to see the numbers compared to 360 and PS3.

Oh and I guess LBP bombed then?

Call of Duty 5 Wii was pretty much non-existent in the charts. Activision's part, really: no marketing whatsoever.

LBP didn't really bomb, but again, little marketing didn't really help its cause.

Mirror's Edge, on the other hand, performed terribly.

I'd still like to see where the other versions of GH:WT lie.

Mirror's Edge bombed totally, as did Little Big Planet - for all the adverts, hype and the fact it's the SONY exclusive for Christmas it's been a BIG disappointment.

Nice to see Wii Music making an appearance :)

2 million units sold... and practically no games for its previously core market this Christmas... What a joke :-/

I'm not bashing, I still love Nintendo. But I feel shitted on to say the least.

Agreed. All these years, Nintendo's been making epic games and getting fuck all money for it - then they release Wii and a decent game every blue moon, whilst doing nothing else and they're earning enough money to buy Japan.

Nobs.

EDIT: Okay, so not fuck all money, but not as much as they did deserve!

Nintendo have been making ALOT of money for a long time! The greedy fuckers just choose not to spend it!

Some common myths debunked:

  • Nintendo does release less games than before: Output has nearly doubled if compared to previous consoles
  • Nintendo does only casual games: 50 games and only eight of them are solely aimed at expanded audience. That Nintendo is popular once more doesn't change status of certain long-standing IPs, no matter what typical teenager wants to believe. I.e. previous generations, Endless Ocean was called weird game, not casual. It was most hardcore of them all thanks to its extremely niche status, and gameplay that wouldn't appeal at average Joe at all.

If you guys want to argue about Nintendo's own output, do it with basic numeric facts, not with something that has been pulled from your arses.

And merry christmas to everybody. I'm going back to my lair to sleep. :)

We couldn't have a thread about Nintendo's success without someone derailing it could we? It's funny really.

But where else can we vent our anger that Nintendo has raped our children and burned our houses? I mean, it's not like anyone's made a thread specifically about casual games.

quality = sales? Since when was that ever true for anything really? If it was the world and consumerism would be very different.

I was reading business articles about how companies like EA and THQ are suffering lately because of focusing on Wii too much.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/110248-a-new-era-of-video-games-the-end-of-shovelware?source=yahoo

Investors do not think Wii is the place for quality games. Nintendo have a downmarket stance. The Wii audience is easily satisfied and are happy to pay more for less. The word shovelware was used for Wii alot.

EA's unsure focus was a negative but it seems they now realise that games like ME and Dead Space for an audience that the 360 and PS3 cater to are the future. First versions have not done so well but they will learn and improve. Sames goes for other publishers who are making new ideas and franchises but having a hard time. This is good for innovation (true innovation) as a side effect just not on Wii.

Its now pretty much accepted as good business practice that Wii is not about quality whatsoever.

Choze was the only one missing, now we can start the party. I'm not even gonna participate as this will be retarded as usual, just a little sweet for you Choze:

“One thing that's different is we typically figured out who the market leader was going to be before the start of the cycle and bet with our development resources on that platform.

“We made the wrong call there [by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360], which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be. But now we're catching up, and I think we're fine. We've got some incredibly innovative Wii titles, [and] incredibly innovative DS titles coming. And so I think that issue's sort of behind us.”

Riccitiello also said he was hopeful of pushing EA’s market share on DS and Wii up to match its dominance on PS3 and 360.

He commented: “Can I make a big step in that direction this year? Yes. Can I continue to make steps in that pattern? Yes. Does Nintendo want us to do it? Yes. Does the platform set itself up for that to be possible? Yes. So, it requires focus.”
