Would we be better people WITHOUT video games?

Recommended Posts

Just now, I threw out my precious Command & conquer 3 CD due to the fact that it just took 3 hours of my revision time due to sheer immersion and the 'I must pwn all' mentality. To be honest, my life feels a bit shaky right now, but yet I turn to games to induce me with some reason to feel joyful and shave hours of time off my life :/.

My question is, all these hours, days, weeks, months and eventually YEARS! we've put into gaming could we have used this precious time of our lives on something more 'constructive'? Or do you feel you have received and adequate amount of inspiration from gaming to declare it worth it?

Games have done nothing for me apart from fun (and quite abit of frustration).

You could argue TV, Movies, Music, Books etc. are exactly the same. Games are an entertainment form and should usually be only seen as that.

But in all honesty if I wasn't gaming I'd probably be doing something else completely useless! (visiting N-Europe LOL)

No.You'll be suprised at how much you learn in a game. And I'm pretty sure that you'd find another way to entertain yourself. Most probably a less expensive way.

If I wasn't playing games I'd probably be watching TV, movies etc instead. I think the discussion is not "Would we be better people without video games" but "would we be better people without technological entertainment" (by which I mean movies/games/tv shows/etc). Basically it boils back down to the same old argument of do these things take us away from other things like socialising and spending time outside.

Depends on the game and what you gain from it. For me, Pac Man is a waste of time. Bioshock isn't. It's not fair to look at the medium as a whole and consider it a waste of time, you have to look at each game on it's individual merits.

Pac Man yes, but Pac Man C.E. is worth every milisecond.

I think without games we'd just be different people rather than better. I'm sure everyone would find something equally as pointless to do with their spare time.

Saying that though, if it weren't for games, I wouldn't have a job so they get a big thumbs up from me.

Bioshock - the definition of overrated.

As for the question at hand? I don't really care as long as I'm having fun. I may have been a sportier person if videogames didn't exist but does playing football make me a better person? Hell no.

When I'm playing live against random people I wonder if videogames wouldn't be better without people.

Being rich makes me a better person?

Most pro footballers are ***** anyway so I think I'll just stick with the videogames.

Im not impressed with you're presumption I'm not an awesome person as it is.

But I seldom game, and I particularly don't let it get in the way of other thins I need to do.

If nothing else my gaming collection provides entertainment for my friends as they lay it more than I do.

But its the constructivety. Wouldn't you love getting paid for playing Smash brothers whilst being served Hawaiian Guava juice under extra plump Egyptian cotton pillows? I think yes. ;)

Over the last few months I've played very little videogames at all and when I have played its been for the social aspect rather than sitting down to complete a game apart from the week or so when I played Burnout Paradise because I had nothing better to do.

I play Pro Evo with a mate when we're bored and its raining outside and also before a night out. It's great to play just before going out, good fun, get good banter from it and you can play for drinks on the games.

I play Halo 3 with another friend and we do split-screen on Live. This is more competitive but I very rarely play it by myself on Live. When I do play by myself in my room its always with either my brother or sister who are at home playing.

So would I be better without videogames? Probably not, I personally believe that playing Halo 2 on Live from January 2004 onwards really helped my real life confidence as I was talking to completely random people about completely random things. So in fact I actually think videogames have helped me develop as a person.

However, you could probably take this the other way too, if I had never started playing videogames I would have gone out and socialised more to begin with and would have gained confidence that way. Take that as you will - it works both ways.

True. Pokemon did help me with thee ole 'electricity travels through water' trick. And now I know not to pit Flame Tanks against Sonic Emitters...<.<...

Games work like a pacifier, like TV. If we didnt have games or TV we would be going on a rampage.

Was the world better before TV came along? I think not!

Maybe not the world, but ancient people seem to have something the current gen lacks (imo). They had skill with weapons, craftsmanship and all those other life skills that radiate culture and a sense of being. I doubt the Samurai would be Samurai if they were watching Bonzai! On Tv.

I'm sorry, what was the question?

No.

...Stop for a minute and lets all do the bump... ^^

(Do you have that 'Holy **** Video games!' jpeg?)
