Man, I just lost a fleet thanks to the crappy software... it was supposed to retreat, the thing crashed, and when I refreshed it had disbanded.

 

Otherwise, this game is indeed awesome.

 

Edit: Hmm, seems it was working okay, and my fleet just got pwned. Ah well.

how long do games last, on average, in terms of in-game years?

As far as I can tell from finished ones, anything from 5-10 on average (10-21 rounds).
