nekunando Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 This thread is being set up for magicbuttons as she can't get to a computer much lately.. so hopefully when she logs in next time, there'll be some helpful responses from you lot 'buttons is interested in getting a Portable Hard Drive to help give her more storage space when using her laptop.. What she would like to know is if any of you have any suggestions as to what would be a good, reliable and reasonably priced Portable Hard Drives? Thanks in advance : peace:
Emasher Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Even though it could be a little more expensive, she could get an iPod classic (or even buy a used one from the last generation) and then also use it as an iPod.
Caris Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Even though it could be a little more expensive, she could get an iPod classic (or even buy a used one from the last generation) and then also use it as an iPod. Jesus Emasher lay off the iPod stuff. Erm, try looking at the Western Digital Passport series.
Calza Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Would a proper external hard drive be better? Compared to the 'portable' options you get a lot more space per buck. Easily 500GB for around £60, though it depends on how she will use it. The external HDD usually need a power supply but I'm guessing the portable ones run off the USB.

Sanchez Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 80GB iPod = £160 500GB LeCie HD = £60 -_- She already has a PMP as well presumably.
Calza Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Alot of people do that now. So you are saying some people look at the iPod for storage space before as a mp3 player? She is looking for portable or external hard drive not a iPod and like Sanchex said she probably already has one. There is being helpful and there is being just plain stupid/annoying.

Cube Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Alot of people do that now. For transferring unimportant documents, it's fine. Using it to transfer/store any personal files is just plain stupid.
My Buttons are Magic! Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 doesnt matter how much space i just really want to know what the best makes to go for are (just something really to store my music/pictures and stuff on)
Caris Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 how does this look. I even choose a colour you might like :P
Shorty Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 I was going to reccomend the same drive as Caris, slightly cheaper at Amazon. It's great if you're after portability. Sure you can get a 500GB one for not much more, but that depends on whether you're after compact design or something you're happy to plug in and leave somewhere.
RoadKill Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 All external drives are pretty much the same thing: a standard 3.5" (or 2.5" for the smaller ones) drive in a fancy case, there's almost nothing to pick out between them other than the brand of drive, and interface, and even now, pretty much every drive is simply USB2 (even though Firewire 400 is quicker, let alone Firewire 800). One thing to note though, is if it needs an external power brick, or whether it can power itself over USB - handy to note if you're going to be using it with a laptop and such.
