Posted May 2, 2008 Right, so I've torn myself away from GTA enough to come and ask some questions about my brand new PS3 (40gb model) here. No doubt it's a powerful machine but I'm a little lost as to what it can do apart from play games... I thought you could plug in any USB device and view pics/movies etc...Nothing works for me that way. Am I doing sommat wrong? What is this media server malarky? I thought the PS3 was wireless yet I have no idea of checking or getting this to work. I've had to plug it into the ethernet connection but swapping between the PC and PS3 is cumbersome. Does the 40gb model NOTplay PS2 games? But PS1? Think I'm right yeah? Are there any cool tips/tricks to getting AVI movies to work from a USB dongle? The initial HOME page is tatty and has waaaaay too many options on it (going downwards)...Is it possible to streamline this at all? Can I burn Music/DVD's to the HD? Bluetooth devices...can I send from my mobile phone to the PS3? Or is it just for controllers/headsets? Anyone recommend anyting else tips wise for the system itself? ...Erm, think that's it. Most devices do work, but you know the obvious thing is that they're switched on. Secondly, the PS3 has to have drivers for them (usually it uses a generic storage medium device) so some times it doesn't work if the device requires specialist drivers. However, you can press triangle to sort by album on your games lists and so on. Ie: I have two folders, demos and full games. Posted May 2, 2008 Ok mate i can help you here. I was daunted at first aswell but trust me when you get it all set up right its great. First of all Wireless: I assume you have a wireless router.... Ok. Turn on your PS3. Set up a username etc and go to the network settings. Let it find your wireless network and stick in your details i.e WEP password. That is literally it Then just join the Playstation Network and your online. You can stream movies and music etc via your PC to your PS3. Go into your PC and log into your router. The easiest way to get this working is to set your PS3 as your DMZ server, it sounds complicated but its not. Your PS3 will have an I.P address, something like 10.0.0.2, you will be able to fnd the address by logging into your router and checking the attached devices. Whatever the I.P address is set that as your DMZ server (the option is in your router under WAN settings). Then download Tversity its free and easy to use. Once installed add any movies or music you want to watch and you should see them under the PS3 media server tab. You can then copy the files onto your PS3 HD should you wish. The PS3 40GB wont play PS2 games but runs most PS1 games through emulation np. Dont know much about the bluetooth i only use the headset Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Posted May 2, 2008 Tversity converts on the fly and as such isn't a 'streaming' only application. Thus if your PC can't keep up with it, it'll have a fit and be extremely laggy. I use Windows Media Connect 2.0 (yeahhhh kickin' it old school) which just streams. My server PC at home is only a P3 1ghz... so obviously i can't use Tversity. Mines not really top notch, just a Dual Core PC my brother gave me a bit ago. But yeah hes right, if your PC is crap you wouldnt be able to use Tversity. Posted May 2, 2008 Oooooo, that was it. Feck! Damn this insane technology. It's just. so. complex. Triangle...old school. :p Now I've sat and pimped up the ps3 back to GTAIV. I have no idea what to get after that. Burnout3 was awesome so may get Paradise. Also another question... When playing a normal DVD upscalling occurs ya? (I'm on a HDMI connection)...what is this "full" etc option? I have nee idea. The instruction manual doesn't cover it as far a I can remember. And, any tips on where to get cheap Blu-Ray Movies? (Not that I have the ability to burn blu rays). My buddy reckons he has a stash. I call bullsh!t. With the correct burning software, anything is possible. You can get BD-Burners and BD-R's now, although they are more expensive than actually buying a BD from a shop...
