Put the final touches on the new desk today with monitor arm and vertical laptop stand. Pretty happy with it.

Looks sweet. Do you kneel at the desk or sort of crouch down?

It’s a standing desk, I’m just really short.

Clean setup, little concern it blocks those drawers but guessing you can just swivel the monitor.

Nice clean desk there @Happenstance. Never saw one of these laptop stands before but I like them, very minimal. Seeing as how your speakers are set, do you work like this or do you swivel the monitor to the center when working/playing?

Fuck. The Xbox One pad I bought for my PC has died. Only bought the bloody thing last year.

Surely this should still be covered under warranty?

Even with the monitor at that angle there’s plenty of room to open those drawers, bit of a trick of the camera I think.

The monitor gets swivelled depending on my mood. It’s back in the centre at the moment. It was set to that angle initially because I used to have the laptop on a different stand so it was open and acting as a second monitor. Kind of miss having that but it did take up more space on the desk. I’m swapping out the speakers for a pc soundbar so it’s easier to position for a setup that’s moving a lot. Other than that I think I just need to get a new webcam and then it’s done.

Not sure to be honest, I’ll look into it. I managed to find the pad with went with my Xbox One that I packed away just last week after hours of searching so at least have something to use for the moment.

Was wondering about that, looks a bit of an uncomfortable angle to sit at the desk and use the monitor as it is.

Looks very nice and clean though, I want to get a similar monitor and arm as part of my home office setup. What models are those two?

The angle isn't actually that bad. I think I probably got used to it from work where I have a curved desk and two monitors.

The monitor is an Electriq (not sure on the model number) but it basically gets rebranded in every country. It's known for being one of the cheapest on the market that still offers a pretty good, 100hz screen.

The arm is Invision MX450 which is the stronger Invision arm for larger monitors. Pretty happy with it so far.

One thing I need to get out of the habit of though now is shutting down the laptop fully. Did it last night so this morning I had to take it out of the stand to turn it on. Just looking into setting up Wake On LAN at the moment so I can have my Echo turn it on instead.

Added some back lighting to the desk as I do like it round my tv. Had to rearrange some stuff though as I was reading yesterday that some Razer laptop screens start to get damaged if you use them for too long while closed. Shame I lost the extra space and more minimalist look but a second screen is always helpful. Looking forward to getting my soundbar so I can get rid of those awful speakers where the wires don't reach long enough to get one the other side of the desk. Also left some proof in there that I actually do sit down just for bob.

Nice, clean setup, and I love the screen :D And I'm relieved you have a chair...

Anyone know any good top loading usb hubs? Looking to attach one to the desk but so many these days are those short wire laptop ones with the ports on the sides.

Anker is a good brand for USB hubs, and they have a bunch of top loader ones. Also depends on how many ports you want and if you want only USB-A or also USB-C on it.

Ewent also has some top loader ones.

Curious by the way, what do you use for the green ambilight there?

I found out that with a firmware update the Steam Controller supports bluetooth. So over the weekend I've been messing about with that combined with Steam Link and my phone, and it works pretty decent. Streamed a couple of games from PC to my phone that way while playing with the Steam Controller. It's pretty weird playing high graphics games like Killer Instinct or Shadow of the Tomb Raider on your phone!

So my next step will be to see if I can make Epic Store games work through Steam Link streaming. I have a number of indie games on the Epic Store from the weekly free claims, but I prefer to play in the living room on the couch instead of in my work room where the PC is. Also the misses often uses the TV so being able to play handheld would be pretty sweet. That way I won't have to buy all those indies on Switch to play handheld.

If I can get that to work I'm going to try to find a fitting phone mount for the Steam Controller. There are a few 3D print models out there like shown below, but I think on Amazon there are options made for the XBox/PS controllers that fit on the Steam Controller as well. And with that I should have the option to play my PC library anywhere!d7b70b7f4bdaa8368e6fbc0ed288ea62_preview

Edit: I followed the guide on this website and it works! I can now launch Epic Store games through the Steam Link app and they run. Gave Abzu a quick test and so far so good.

Suddenly got the urge to play The Sims 4 again. Might even buy a couple of expansion packs.

Xbox unsurprisingly continuing to push hard on PC, cutting their fees from sales down to 12% from 30%, bringing them in line with the Epic Games Store.

I doubt it’ll do much. The Windows Store just doesn’t seem like it’ll ever compete on the same level as other PC digital stores.

Hopefully they'll eventually include "player first" important features like allowing players to edit files (especially configuration files) and also actually delete game files when you uninstall them.

I’m kind of back on to my thoughts from the end of last year to build myself a gaming PC. Is there any reason to hold off for big things coming in the near future or is now a good time to jump in?

The biggest reason to hold off is still the price of things like graphics cards with all the shortages and crypto miners buying stuff. Things are way more expensive than they should be right now.

Yeah that’s definitely a consideration. Hoping I can get something through work which makes that one a little easier. Otherwise I guess I’m good to go for it? Wasn’t sure if I’d be hitting it just before some huge change that I’d regret not waiting for.

It's impossible to know how long the supply issues and crypto usage will keep prices inflated. I personally don't see anything as big as RTX cards or super fast SSDs happening anytime soon (other than both options slowly getting more affordable).

Edit: By that, I mean something new that's as impactful as those things.

The new super ARtx cards are rumoured to come out soon and they're supposed to project games into reality. The porn industry is all excited at the moment for them.
