Teppo Holmqvist Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 It's the exact same thing as the snes controller:hmm: with larger handles And two additional shoulder buttons.
mcj metroid Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 PSOne didn't have even that many. Zing! There really wasn't that many on consoles in general back then. But ya Ps1 was worse but what has that to do with anything? He was comparing n64 controllers to ps2,xbox and gamecube ones. And two additional shoulder buttons. ah yes of course..haha someone is out to get me today.. i'd better be more careful with my posts

The N64 may have had a poor analogue stick but it was the first of its kind. I mean, I could pull up the snes and mega drive pads for being uncomfortable but they were deveoping ideas. What I'm getting at is that the N64 pad was not a 'mistake' it was a great pad for its day and if its getting slanderend while Sonys Snes pad with handles is escaping negative press then there is no justice. The N64 may have looked like your PS pads mangled, fugly sister. But turn off the lights and fire up Blast Corps, Lylat Wars, F-Zero and it handled like a dream.
dazzybee Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 The article was the biggest load of bollocks - the Wii there? Fucking morons, for a highprofile gaming press site giving up on the Wii after a few months of release is a fucking disgrace. How can they not know what they supposedly specialise in? Do they not learn from the history of the DS, the Wii is following so close you'd have to be a pinball wizard not to realise it. Yeah Nintendo screwed Sony over but the nintendo geek in me ignores that, personally I hate what Sony did to the industry, and nothing pleases me more everytime I see sales figures of the DS crushing the PSP and how the PS3 is underperforming great stuff. Anyways 2 things. 1. Controllers, the N64 controller was awesome for its time, the gamecube pad was and is amazing, and I HATE the dual shocks, the most digital-esque 'analogue' sticks there's ever been and a pad that gives me blisters after 10 minutes from them bastard screw holes. 2. Nintendo mistakes, well, cartridges were a greater-good mistake. Thinking they could do everything themelevs without 3rd parties (which they've now admitted to). Delaying the Cube. The history with Europe (though i personally think they are improving greatly). And I would agree online, though personally I dont care about it. PS And msj metroid, why do you slag off nintendo all the time?
Fierce_LiNk Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 The N64 controller was amazing, not sure why people hate it. For shooters, it was a godsend. I thought it was pretty well suited for other genres as well. A and B were the two priority buttons, and so I don't think the addition of the C buttons detracted from games too much. It was like you looked at the pad and thought "hmm, I wonder why button you use to confirm an option." The fact they were coloured says a lot as well. I thought it was a bit daft how they shoved the Wii on that list. People don't judge the Xbox360 or the DS by its first year, so why are people so ready to put the Wii down from the start? World War 2 didn't just happen overnight.
Mikey Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 The N64 controllers were good for their time, now they're shite. Good god it has a nasty analogue stick, even when the thing hasn't been worn down.
Fierce_LiNk Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 The material it is made out of is pretty crappy too, I reckon. What they need to do is bring out a special edition N64 pad, with the aesthetics of the Wii controller. Add some of the GC funky shoulder buttons, a better analogue stick, and Wii style buttons and a nicer to press D-pad, and it'll be awesome.

Gaijin von Snikbah Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I think that hardcore gamers think that there are more hardcore gamers purchasing consoles than casual gamers. This is not the case, the casual gamers outweigh the number of hardcore gamers. Casual gamers dont care about online as much as hardcore gamers. More no-care outweighs less-care. The reason the N64 and Gamecube failed was because they tried to appeal to the hardcore gamers. Now thats changed and so has the sales numbers. This is why the Wii will pawn PS3 and Xbox360.
pedrocasilva Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Though it seems to be fucking hard to some people to grasp, WoW isn't the rule, it is exception to rule. It is only MMORPG outside Korea that has over 3 million subscribers.I agree, online is not that big of a deal, but still... I'd like to see the impact of a Pokémon MMORPG.It's the exact same thing as the snes controller:hmm: with larger handlesI still find SNES controllers to be more confortable, and the D-pad is really miles better. The N64 controllers were good for their time, now they're shite. Good god it has a nasty analogue stick, even when the thing hasn't been worn down.I don't find them shite when they're not worn out, I mean... Playstation ones are worse. There's a "easy" fix for worn out stick you know? :p -> http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/nintendo/n64cont.htm But yeah, I'd love to see a N64 controller for Wii, made with today's standards. That said I'd love to see real SNES controllers in design, Mega Drive/Genesis, etc... controllers. Hell... I'd love to see that Wii Waverbird mock-up still. Gimme gimme, specially if they upgrade the firmware so I can actually play games with the classic controller.

Cube Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 But it was terrible for beat em ups which at the time was the more important genere. It was good for beat-em-ups, it's just that noone used it the way it should have.
Saminthehat Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I loved the N64 controller, the Z button was friggin genious! The Wii though should definately have not been on that list.
mcj metroid Posted April 11, 2007 Author Posted April 11, 2007 It was good for beat-em-ups, it's just that noone used it the way it should have. and what way was that?
pedrocasilva Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 and what way was that?probably without using the joystick, just the D-pad. It's impressive how well the D-pad was positioned for back catalog gameplay and most didn't really used it. Think of it... it had 6 face action buttons (A, B, C up, C right, C down, C left) just like Segas Fighting controllers (still used today)
mcj metroid Posted April 11, 2007 Author Posted April 11, 2007 i dunno mortal kombat trilogy and 4 was terrible on n64. Killer instinct gold wasn't much better than 4. In my opinion smash bros was a piece of crap too(gives you a headache) i can't name one enjoyable one.

In my opinion smash bros was a piece of crap too(gives you a headache) i can't name one enjoyable one.I just wouldn't blame the controller. But Nintendo 64 didn't really shine as a fighting game machine, that's for sure. Most important genre in the world back then? dunno, but a lot more important (specially in Japan) yeah it was.
DCK Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 The N64 controller was brilliant. They should release a N64 controller shaped VC controller - that'd rule. The other stuff is about right, though that 'releasing the Wii' is really questionable.
mcj metroid Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 yes i can't understand why they put releaseing the wii there. i believe that if nintendo went the same route sony and microsoft went they would have done a sega by now
