Dante Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 With many people complaining about the small size of the 512MB internal memory of Nintendo's Wii and the current lack of compatibility between the system and external USB storage devices, there appears to be good news on the horizon. An official Press Release has gone out from eSOL, Ltd, stating that its leading embedded middleware products, "PrFILE2" FAT file system and "PrUSB/Host" USB host stack, have been selected by Nintendo for use with the Wii console. Both software products constitute fundamental functionalities in the Wii console - managing and transferring data and files with external media. In particular, PrFILE2 provides file management functions that read and write data from SD memory cards, as well as other media. PrUSB/Host functions are used in Wii, to provide USB host functions. "I am very happy that we could take part in the development for Wii, a new game console from Nintendo. I believe that our products were selected because Nintendo highly-valued our long, successful history with many digital consumer products and high-reliability and functionality based on that. We will continue to provide superior products and technical services to strongly support developers in embedded software development." - Nobuyuki Ueyama, Executive Vice President, Embedded Products Division at eSOL. www.cubed3.com
The Lillster Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So I guess this means we'll be able to download bigger content now, i.e Wii demos.
Mike Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 All very well and good, as long as we can run files from the USB sticks, rather than having to copy them onto the Wii's Flash memory to get at them, like the current SD card situation.
Jasper Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 There's a move I didn't expect. I thought Nintendo was going to defend it's 512 internal with all their power. However, I hope this is more than just an SD-card-like attachment, meaning that it will extend the number of channels you can use (say, if you plug in a -theoreticly speaking - 512 Mb hard disk that you get another 48 channels). If it's just something to transfer your data to and not something you can directly read it from unless you copy it to the internal memory, I'm buying it. Come on Nintendo, it's not hard.
Gizmo Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 What date was that press release made? It seems to me like it's just that company getting in on a bit of the Wii success by stating they did the SD card stuff...
christophicus Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 The fact that an SD system is mentioned would lead me to think that you will probably be able to play games right off the SD cards. THE hard drives are very good news too. .
canocha Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I can already see a Demo Channel and and multiplayer added to a couple of games (maybe not)
Dante Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 What date was that press release made? It seems to me like it's just that company getting in on a bit of the Wii success by stating they did the SD card stuff... Here is press release for it.
Jasper Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 What date was that press release made? It seems to me like it's just that company getting in on a bit of the Wii success by stating they did the SD card stuff... Euhm, actually, this company is on your Wii's file management and message board system all the time. Look for eSol as a company - or even bgetter, dig up your Wii's instruction manuals, they're mentioned in there for the mail service called PrMail. They've been working with Nintendo for loads of things with Wii, from USB ti SD card usage, so they're really supportive for the system. So no, ti's not just them trying to garb some newly-won attention with such a press-release. They're serious business, Gizmo.
Caris Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So what does all this mean exactly? I dont understand it...
Gizmo Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Yeah I know they are, I was just saying - from the way that article is written I don't see a proper announcement of any sort. Just the company saying they did the SD Cards and describing their product. Maybe the article is just badly written, but that's what I got from it. So what does all this mean exactly? I dont understand it... At least it's not just me!
christophicus Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Well hopefully , you will be able to play games/demo's/ whatever straight off of the sd cards, and hopefully you will be able to use USB Hard disks too.
Daft Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Untill I here something from Nintendo, I'm not holding my breath...although this does look promising!
christophicus Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Yeah Completely , you can never believe anything to do with ninty untill you actually have it and are using it.
Emasher Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 if you could load save games and vc games (let alone put them onto and SD) directly off of an SD card i think we would be fine for SD cards. if there is hard drive support in the works i actually have a 4gig drive somewhere. it would be perfect for the wii but you cant really use it with a computer.
DCK Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So basically, you can attach USB disks and harddrives to your Wii some time in the future? Nice. Means I can use my MP3 player on Excite Truck. If I had it. And if all my music wasn't in .ogg format.

If I had it. And if all my music wasn't in .ogg format. So it's like the 360, where it has ipod support? or am i getting confused....
darksnowman Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 if you could load save games and vc games (let alone put them onto and SD) directly off of an SD card i think we would be fine for SD cards. Could that be made possible through a revered firmware update?
DCK Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So it's like the 360, where it has ipod support? or am i getting confused....Not exactly. It means you can use USB hard drives and USB data sticks in the same way as you can use SD cards. And since most MP3 players are USB data sticks, you could plug them in the Wii and use the music in the Photo Channel or Excite Truck.
Gizmo Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I knew there was a reason I didn't chuck out my old mp3 when I got my Vision:M.
flameboy Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Well this is great news, all means we could have a download channel for demo's...and also more exciting in some ways the indie virtual console stuff that has allegedly been in the works for awhile, which is one thing I think Nintendo are behind Sony and Microsoft in. I'd be happy if they sorted this out, I'd have 3 gig for now at least, which will do me for now.cos have a 512K card and 2 gig usb stick plus of course the Wii's onboard memory.
gaggle64 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So theoretically I could use my external hard drive currently tethered to my PC for storage, ja?
christophicus Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Tellyn : no Gaggle : yes Darksnowman : One would think so, seeing as it is simply software preventing this already being done, as far as Im aware.
raven_blade2006 Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 They took their time but its good to hear the USB ports will eventually be enabled for storage use. This can only mean larger downloadable content is coming.
