Oditri Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 All I was saying is my music taste ranges through Metal, Emo, Pop, even Classical. I really don't know what the hell I am when it comes to music. In my eyes, music falls into 3 categories: stuff I like, stuff I don't like, and stuff I haven't heard. Oh, and give MCR a break. I think they're getting better. I definitely preferred Black Parade over their other two ablums.
Oxigen_Waste Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 The Slipknot was a reference to a band that screams, I wasn't saying they were metal. Meh, I don't care. Dragonforce FTW all the way, as far as I'm concerned. Plus, I said more of a metalhead, and I wasn't entirely sure of myself when I typed it. My music taste is so varied, if I listed my whole music collection and asked for opinions on what I am, most answers would probably come back "freak". My music collection ranges through Judas Priest, Dragonforce, Loituma (A Finnish folk band), Strawberry Flower (composers of the Japanese Pikmin theme), My Chemical Romance and Within Temptation. Want to try and define my music taste? Hon, it's like this, you're not unique. I can listen dream pop as easilly as I listen to Goregrind, however, I tend to listen to quality stuff. Now, Dragonforce I will not criticize, for they are indeed a great Power Metal band, even though I don't like PM... However, you can't really expect to say Gaymmerfall or My Chemical Romance without getting that "SHIT" answer Bard gave you from anyone who is a bit iluminated musically. Ok... let's just say it: try harder. AND BARD!!! I know, I'm excited, even though I read some bad reactions! Let us hope Nile keep up with themselves. =/
Zell Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I try that, in vain. Such slow speeds. Thanks for trying to help though I'm guessing you don't upload any torrents at all? If you don't upload torrents the bittorrent programme will limit your down speed, hence the slowness.
Noodleman Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Tbh everyone who is older then 15 at least mentally, will end up being able to listen to, and liking, something from most genres of music.
Slaggis Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I'm guessing you don't upload any torrents at all? If you don't upload torrents the bittorrent programme will limit your down speed, hence the slowness. I do, alot actually, always have some uploading.
Oditri Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Well, I guess I'm gonna have to agree to disagree musically with you. I'm sorry, but I like Hammerfall and MCR, and the last three years of people telling me they're shit hasn't changed my mind, so a person I barely know really isn't gonna change my perspective that much. P.S. gay really doesn't sound that offensive to someone who is. Calling it "gaymmerfall" only makes me like it more...
The Bard Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 MCR are untalented, and totally exploitive of over-angsty teenage idiots. You need to listen to more music. I listen to a lot of music, not just metal. But saying you like everything just means that you have no personality. Now listening to...Opeth - Ghost Reveries
harribo Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 A mate recommended Emily Haines And The Soft Skeleton. Just listened to it, and i liked what I heard. I'm not sure what was so good, as she is like any other female vocalist. I think it might have been the piano that made it for me. I am having a weird music stage at the moment. Up untill about 12 months ago I was very metal, but ever since I discovered Death Cab for Cutie I am spreading out loads and listening to much more electronic stuff I wouldn't have dreamed of listenign to even 6 months ago, like Chemical Brothers, Pendulum and Squarepusher. It''s very odd. Live though, you still can't beat a good metal gig. I could have recommended Emily Haines to you also Metric her band are one of the best indie bands around. Also electronic music check out :((colon open bracket)
Oditri Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 You need to listen to more music. That's one point I'm not gonna disagree with you on, but for now I'm just gonna live with whatever music I enjoy, and I enjoy MCR. P.S. I never said I enjoyed everything, I just have a fairly varied taste.
Paj! Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Oxigen and Bard need to learn that becuase they say stuff is shit doesn't mean it is. I can't be arsed listening to metal. It's just boring. For me, anyway. I like a bit of energy and fun. So, I like bands like MCR, AFI etc. I love lyrics and song structure more than angry men shouting at me (generalisation, but yeah.) I hate this attitude that if one listens to anything remotely mainstream their taste in music doesn't count for anything or is "shit". It's just annoying. I love MCR. Apparently that means i'm musically immature. But I love Bjork too. Does that cancel it out? I'd love to know. Sometimes I wish more people were open-minded to other people's tastes, rather than assuming theirs is the highest one can get.
Dan_Dare Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I don't always agree with bard's tastes in music, but his conduct in lambasting young miscreants within this thread are, generally, spot on. One day, you'll look back on your record collection of today and pretend 'music came late' in your life to girls you meet in bars. Or boys. You know, whoever you wanna engage in gland to gland combat with. My point stands.
Paj! Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I agree I'll discover more and more people I love. (I am now even, I love Last.fm) But I beleive I'll still love Bjork, maybe not MCR, but still. Because someone doesn't like it doesn't make it "shit". I think songs are made awful by their tune/melody and/or lyrics. So, IMO MCR have very few crap songs. They do have some, but in general, they aren't shit.
Dan_Dare Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 for the record: Props on Bjork. She's one of the best songwriters in the world, easily. Brilliant mind...
Paj! Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Yeah, she's the queen. I actually love. If I was stranded on an island, and could only take one CD and a walkman, i'd take 'Vespertine", or "Homogenic". I'll never get bored of those.
The Bard Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Haha, mainstream? I was listening to MJ 20 minutes ago, so that argument consists entirely of bullshit. Fun? How are MCR fun, in any way? I suppose you mean fun in a totally slapstick and banal way. You are musically very inexperienced. As for lyrics and song structure? You like emotionally immature men ranting about revenge in a verse/ chorus/ verse arrangement? If you want fascinating song structure, go listen to Opeth, or Messuggah, or countless other bands. You haven't come across true music, as is painfully obvious from every word you've uttered in this thread. As for shouting...or screaming... you seem to have no problem with distorted guitars, so why do you moan about distorted vocals, which when done properly work really well. There's nothing more anguished and ugly and visceral than a good metal vocalist, and it all goes into the effect of the music. All metal bands that I listen to have a really brilliant grasp of melody. MCR really do not.
Paj! Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Fine, ok. Meshuggah are exactly what I don't like. That kinda stuff is good at a concert, but I wouldn't listen to that for pleasure. Opeth (never heard before now) are better, but still banal and ho-hum. Who said anything about distorted vocals? I'm obsessed with Bjork.. :p Fun was actually an awful word to use, lol. I really meant energy/energetic. And, calling MCR banal may be true of some of their stuff, but look who recommended Opeth and Meshuggah. By shouting I meant that one droning bellow that many metal singers seem to do. There's no words; just incomprehensable noise. I hate arguing about music. I love music, I just don't like people's attitudes sometimes.
weeyellowbloke Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I've got Caring Is Creepy by The Shins stuck in my head. It's fucken ace. I doubt anyone will agree . The Shins pretty cool, need to get more of their stuff. Still got a plectrum of theirs from a gig aaaaaages ago. Today I have been mostly listening to stuff from Warp Records such as Boards of Canada, Nightmares on Wax and Aphex Twin. I feel I might have lost part of my mind somewhere along this musical odyssey.
Dan_Dare Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 The Shins pretty cool, need to get more of their stuff. Still got a plectrum of theirs from a gig aaaaaages ago. Today I have been mostly listening to stuff from Warp Records such as Boards of Canada, Nightmares on Wax and Aphex Twin. I feel I might have lost part of my mind somewhere along this musical odyssey. it's high five time again. if you really wanna get lost in that stuff, take drugs. Seriously, it's alot of fun when your concious mind basically consists of a bassline and synth.
weeyellowbloke Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Well all I can say is that it's not as bad as the time I went to bed a bit drunk, put Boards of Canada on the portable CD player and lay in the dark slowly drifting off to sleep. Boy were they some strange dreams. Oh and HIGH FIVE!
Platty Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 After seeing her at Latitude I can't stop listening to Kate Nash.
The Bard Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Mesuggah are pretty cerebral, and tend to make intelligent music, mostly appreciated by musicians (and Oxigen Waste o_0 ) Opeth are just plain amazing in every way though, they're emotive, beautiful, and almost every other positive adjective I associate with music...your comments about them are just so sad and pitiable. MCR are totally clueless. They're totally boring and ordinary, and in every song you can predict what's going to happen next. They have no sense of melody or any sense of anything that can be incorporated into music to make it evocative or involving or challenging. As for Droning Bellow, I assume you're referring to crap like Cannibal Corpse. Don't worry...I think they're shit too . But sometimes, the music isn't about the vocals at all...take Children Of Bodom. The Vocals are the one thing that don't add anything to the experience...but thats irrelevant because musicianship is so mind blowing that you end up not giving a shit. When you say...incomprehensible, I say so fucking what? The great thing about music is that it's mostly sounds that we don't associate any meaning to, yet it still can have an amazing effect on us. Some music needs lyrics, and thats fine, some music may or may not have lyrics, but doesn't need them, which is something you need to understand. The last thing I want to say to you is that music is an evolving and progressive experience...trust me, there will probably (if you are half as intelligent as I think you are) come a day when MCR won't satisfy you, just like there came a day for me a long time ago when I realised that The Offspring and System of A Down weren't really as interesting as I thought. There are only a few people on this forum who really have a good of what music is and should be; I can list them on one hand. To Weeyellowbloke: You lucky guy! I'd kill to see them live, mainly because it'd be a gig that me and all my friends can enjoy. + Aphex Twin = ass kickage. art *is* meaningless. thats why it's so good. Just reading through the thread from the start cause I was bored, and came across this reply to one of my posts which I must have missed. So: Will someone please explain this concept to me, because it's just gone completely over my head... Maybe I'm just an idiot.
conzer16 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I've just heard THE MOST AWESOME version of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. It was a string quartet and I was wondering does anyone know who does it or where I can get it from as it has to be the best arranged piece of music I have heard in a long time... Edit: Never mind -
Oxigen_Waste Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Oxigen and Bard need to learn that becuase they say stuff is shit doesn't mean it is. And you need to learn that because you think it isn't shit, it doesn't mean it's not. You see, it's the opposite side of the same coin. You do the same thing we do, reversed. I don't always agree with bard's tastes in music, but his conduct in lambasting young miscreants within this thread are, generally, spot on. One day, you'll look back on your record collection of today and pretend 'music came late' in your life to girls you meet in bars. Or boys. You know, whoever you wanna engage in gland to gland combat with. My point stands. Dan, I love you more everyday that goes by. Opeth are banal and ho-hum. Oh... my... god. :shakehead The insolence. Aphex Twin  ALSO: I'm really really really really getting into Jazz lately. Charles Mingus is a f***ing genious! And so are Miles and Coltrane! Damn, I finally understand!
