mtg101 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I'm 32 years old. I play computer games. Until this year I had the proud status of Nerd. Of Geek. When people met me by the water cooler at work: I told them about how I played Four Swords with some friends last night. I was special. Then the DS took over. My mother-in-law is now better than I am at Nintendogs agility events. She's managed to get Joey's pic in Animal crossing in her first month of owning the game, and I'm still trying three months after he moved into my town. And then there's the Wii. I was discussing Wii Sports bowling with the landlord of my local pub last night. A guy we know who until last month professed that he'd "rather drink Budweiser than play Playstation" has ordered a Wii because "well, it's cool playing tennis properly". Since when do these people play video games? I used to be special because I liked computer games. Nintendo has spoiled it.

I feel your pain, I don't wanna part of the mainstream, maybe I'll buy a PS3 instead.
4q2 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Let them join in..... Train hard (that should keep that nerd status in check).....then beat the living daylights out of them in multiplayer competition Btw...nice to see a gamer who is (almost) as old as myself.
Fierce_LiNk Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 There's always going to be doubters who think "oh yeah, its great for non-gamers, but non-gamers won't actually buy this stuff." I was one of those doubters, but my Uncle is now looking into buying a Wii after I showed off WiiSports to him. He's a tennis fan, so that instantly appealed to him. He used to hate games and thought they were quite pointless, so I was pretty surprised to hear he wanted to buy one. Honestly, I wish I had four Wiimotes. I've had waaay more people crowding around me to see the Wii being used than I ever did the Gamecube, the N64 or even the SNES.
solitanze Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I feel your pain, I don't wanna part of the mainstream, maybe I'll buy a PS3 instead. Wii needs another additional 10,000 sales to account for your possible PS3 purchase.
Jasper Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 It's good to see you have made a positive evolution and you have become part of a group. This, my dear friends, is what they call fun. Now, let's all wave goodbye to the years of being white 'n nerdy. Byebye to the years os sitting on the couch, drowning our controllers in sweat and hoping that Bowser finnaly hits that last bomb. Farewell to the years we wore out our eyes so we neede glasses and farewell to the years with no friends, social life, beer, love or happiness. Goodbye to feeling great in a game, welcome to feeling like a King on Earth. Nintendo has finnaly made gaming a casual thing and within years from now Wii will be remembered like the iPod and Kellog's. Nintendo is right. it sounded wrong at first. it sounded like a weak play on the mass market, but it's there. It's finally here. it the future. A bright one, far away from the closed curtains and the only light being the warming rays of our television. Look up, at the sun (and not straight at it, you fool, that's dangerous). And at your new friends. While handing your Wii remote to your new closest pal and look how he messes up the shot again. Go Wii! Honor it.
martinist Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 my parents allways say people over 30 shouldn't be wasting their time playing videogames, but screw them i'm a gamer till i die
|Laguna| Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 my parents allways say people over 30 shouldn't be wasting their time playing videogames, but screw them i'm a gamer till i die You say that now but I'm sure as people get older lots of stuff intefers more and more such as wife, job, kids and they play games less and less and less. I mean just experiencing some exams almost completely killed my gaming hours, and that's just a poxy exam.
Emasher Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 i like the fact that more people are playing video games they just better not interfear with my game time
Jasper Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 my parents allways say people over 30 shouldn't be wasting their time playing videogames, but screw them i'm a gamer till i die Well, i've stopped playing a lot. i've got up to three-thousand euros of videogaming stuff in house (games and consoles),a dn it's worth less than 400 euros right now, except my Wii. Now let's be honest: do we still play as much as the days o yore? off course not, when you grow up, you grow out. Except if you play WoW, wich, from what I have heard, is as addictive as smelling tipp-ex. Not that I smell typp-ex. I'll be honest, games have being losing my interest and people are getting more. I do like playing games and being part of this social club. There's something about playing games and still not be a nerd that makes me feel somewhat powerfull. In cotnrol, so to speak. I'm in for social contacts, though, so gaming is getting fewer time from me. This forum more. Affinicado, ehre I come! Ahem. I feel your pain, I don't wanna part of the mainstream, maybe I'll buy a PS3 instead. And, yes, you will be part of your own little group of PS3 owners, who have big, black houses with no heat system. The PS3 will be warm enough to cook your dinner and still warm your family. It will be something very niche. Even if it's only for the big uns with laods of money. Or accountants. Or Belgian princes, who actually con the goverment without them knowing. What i'm saying is you need to be filthy rich. But in return, you can build a house without heat system or cooking. just a PS3 will do fine. And you can play games on it. If you want to do that.
4q2 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 You say that now but I'm sure as people get older lots of stuff intefers more and more such as wife, job, kids and they play games less and less and less. Nah, thats not true in all cases, lifestyles are changing....I dont do TV (As most do) so that free's up a vast amount of time, I still get to the pub more times than are healthy, hold down a job and a relationship, go clubbing on the w/e's. It all depends on the commitments you set yourself. I always thought I would grow out of gaming.....Guess what ? It never happened.
Ginger_Chris Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Install Linux on every PC you own, then you'll be nerdy and special again. I did.
