According to Sony's general manager of Australia and New Zealand.

Sony's general manager of New Zealand and Australia recently caught up with The Sydney Morning Herald, and quickly drew up a comparison between the PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

"The Wii-type functionality is just a sub-element of what the PlayStation 3 offers," he claimed.

He then went to further elaborate this by saying: "Wii is a core gaming device. It's a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up, where the PS3 is a broader entertainment solution; so you can have your fun, enjoyable gaming ... but then you have a whole suite of other applications ... such as Blu-ray media playback, the ability to access your music, access your photos and the interoperability with the PSP"

However, one could argue that the Photo Channel in the Wii Channels interface adds a different dimension to the Wii. A dimension that is not 'purely' gaming.

Its the same thing every year isnt it?! I laughed so much. What kind of statement is that? Buy the Playstation for its multimedia - the games are crap. However the Wii is really fun and a gamers system.

which side is he on?

Someone should point out to Sony that Nintendo aren't really promoting these extra features, and that Nintendo can actually make a decent User Interface.

Nice to know that Sony think that the Wii is more fun. :p

All I know is for a console that produces supposedly last generation graphics, the demo pod was pulling one hell of a crowd in Game this afternoon. They also had one in HMV but that was switched off when I went in.

Do Sony actually know what their PS3 is meant to be? Now they're talking about a multimedia center, ignoring the games and compare the multimedia features of a game console to that. Talking about apples and oranges...

Well Sony never fails to give reasons why to hate them.

What's so great about blue-ray? Does Sony think everyone will ditch DVDs for blueray? It didnt work for PSP with UMDs. It's pointless. you can only play those media files on a playstation system.

Why would you want to do that?

Practically everyone has a computer that is 100 times more useful so does it really matter if the PS3 has applications?

I dont think so.

i think they practicly did

Yet another generic Sony bashing thread.

It's Sony, it is a competitor, they are not gonna say "hay m8 the wii is gr8, better then ours k8"

yeah but this one is different in that they are dragging themselves down with this statement.

im sure this guy got fired.

hmm, doesnt Wii play music, let you view photos and connect with the DS? not exactly selling the PS3 is he?

On the Blu Ray front, it makes me laugh. Yet again we have 2 competing media types, just like Laserdisk vs CD and VHS vs Betamax except this time nobody cares! At the rate the 2 formats are selling they'll both be getting replaced by SD cards and movie downloads/streaming before theyve even got 5% market penetration! Why? Because very few consumers are ready to stake their money on either format. Maybe the PS3 will change this, maybe not.

Same person also said this: :p

"The Wii-type functionality is more just a sub-element of what the PlayStation 3 offers," says Nic Foster, clearly referring to motion sensitivity. "Wii is a core gaming device. My dad got a Blue Ray player in @ work a couple weeks ago and he says that real people look bad because the picture is too sharpened but animation looks good. BTW, Its $1300 Canadian lmfao. If Blue Ray takes off it will be because of the PS3 >.< (aka using PS3 rather than actually blue ray player which costs lots more)

More fuel to the fire.

A PS4 will be launched by Sony but not until at least 2010 claims the Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Paul Holman.

What will happen between then and now is that Sony will introduce a series of firmware upgrades that will give the PS3 more media centre capability while allowing for the introduction of third party applications and hardware "Such as interactive controllers" similar to the Nintendo Wii he said.
