metallica boring live? i have seen them 3 times (leeds '03, earls court '03 and download '04) and they have been fantastic everytime. Sure, the venues themselves dont have the same intensity of atmosphere that the astoria or somewhere like that has, but the music is great and i think they put on a very good live show. Over the last couple of years i have seen about 150 bands, and a good many of them had no idea how to behave on stage or how to put on a show, but i would never have considered putting metallica in that group.

It was very good, certainly the best instore gig i have been too. It was delayed by an hour, so given your state, i reckon you really woudnt have been happy hough!
-
i tried to get a ticket for that off a tout for the birmingham show last night. he quoted me £100! Damn those crazy monkeys for overinflating prices!
-
i think besides the mars volta and muse this years festival will be an NME fest, with just an indie overkill, and i am certainly reaching the end of my tether r.e. the non hateage of all this talentless-indie-bangwagon-jumping atm. that being said, i saw we are scientists today who were great

i had heard all the confirms apart from metallica, which will be great! i havnt got my ticket yet, but i will have it by the end of the month, when money is a little better. Mastodon, soulfly, chimaria, inflames and machine head are imo absolutely dead certs to play download this year based on album releases and the fact that they have all played there before. I expect SOAD will also go again, as technically they are still promoting hypnotize, and they clearly like the festival. there are very strong rumours that tool will play - they are headlining the coachella festival and have a new album in the works. if the mars volta played it would potentially be best line up ever

if it was something much more expensive you would know immediatly that they had to be told, so just because it is less expensive doesn't really change the situation. sorry

i have seen fightstar, and i really enjoyed it. in fact im going to see them again. i admit i first listened to them to see what charlie was doing post-busted, but it only took a few minutes for me to realise i genuinely like them. oh, and im going to go head to head with platty with my list. i have removed any pointess ones that will mean nothing to you all. Interesting news for j-rock fans (UK gig!)...

In my room there is black stuff, which i assume must be mould round the window, and anywhere on the outside wall that is touched by furniture, eg around the wall next to my matress. i was just wondering if mould was harmfl in anyway, as all the knowledge i have on this i from a king of the hill episode and they say it doesnt matter too much.

i'll have to buy that, i like the subways, i like vinyl and i like you. awww. lol

yay! my best friend has bought me a ticket for nottingham for my 21st birthday, which is a few days before. WOO!

grebe, you have alot of good points about the current indie scene. The Strokes basically started a craze which a few talented musicians (Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, The Zutons to name a couple) used to develop thei own music, whilst alot of less talented bands used it to get rick (futureheads, bloc party, kaiser chiefs etc). I also agree with what you said about the labelling of indie. it is the most widely thrown about genre, just thrown at any band who talk about what they feel. My Chemical romance aren't emo. thats metal core imo. Genre in music is al about snobbery anyway though. people just want to feel better than other people, and one of the ways the human race hhas decided it can show superiority over each other is by classifying its music in disorganised and often irrational and unnecessary subdivisions, often listening almost exclusively to one of these subdivisions and attocking those who chose to listen to another.

i love deathcab, i wish they were going closer to birmingham. i might have to book a hostel in nottingham as thats closest.
-
i have asked for cd's and vinyl. Other than that I will buy myself a DS and mario kart in the new year, and i reckon i'll get some cash from random family members.
-
i dont really like modest mouse, which given that i like the postal service and belle and sebastion which imo are pretty similar is odd. i clearly havnt given them a good enough chance. for those of you who don't do indie, try 'the fall of troy', my latest band discovery
-
whilst i haven't listened to much westlife as far as i know they have done only a couple of covers. edit: done some research on wikipedia: 'Filan is the group's de facto lead singer, using a commercial pop style, and does some songwriting.' note 'writing' 'As of late 2005, they have published five original pop albums, one greatest hits album and one Frank Sinatra-inspired swing album' note 'original' so they aren't a cover band.

The Mars Volta - Frances the mute: Probably my most listened to album released this year. I love it. It is one of the most beautifull albums ever imo. The Arcade Fire - Funeral: A very recent discovery for me. A few weak tracks but on the whole very strong. I love the first few tracks in particular. Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm burning star: Another very new discovery which I love for many of the same reasons as the Arcade Fire. Queens of the Stoneage - Lullabies to Paralyze: Strong, loud, catchy and very different. My favourite album by QOTSA by a mile. Trivium - Ascendancy: In the future this album will be heralded as one of the first really quality albums of the 'new metal' (not nu-metal) scene. The solo is back, along with great vocals are powerfull songs. Also rans: Meshuggah - catch 33, SOAD - Mesmerise/Hypnotize, Oasis - Don't Beleive the Truth, Sigur Rós - Takk A big mention also to The Fall of Boss Koala, whose debut EP launched this year. Its a fantastic EP, and has resulted in them being signed, and to Hey Pablo! who launched their debut EP and deserve to be signed ASAP!

2 gigs really stand out for out of the 50 or so I have been to in terms of boths quality of crowd and audience. The first was Mastodon at a small (500ish capacity) venue. I was right at the front andreally in the thick of it all. Everyone in the crowd were clearly major fans and Mastodon are excptionally musicians. The gig was so good it got a thread on C-E. The second was a relatively unkonown band, The Red Chord, at a tiny tiny venue (it was the cellar of a pub, must have been less than 50 people there). I had only gone as a friend said 'i'm going to this, you have nothing to do, come too.' In fact, I had only heard 1 of their albums once. Musically it was very good, but it was the audience and crowd/band interaction that won it over for me. There was literally no barrier of any form (mentally fo physically) between the stage and the crowd. My friend was actually standing on stage throughout at the side, talking to the bassist between songs. On several ocassions the microphone was taken by an audience member. It was about the most intense gig i have been too. In terms of musical quality The Mars Volta, Sigur Ros and Mastodon really stand out.
