  1. Well I've just spent £120 on various nonsense. Probably going to have to reserve another £20 or so for bits n' bobs to even things out, then another £20 at least for the obligatory xmas drinks-for-presents for the mates not cool enough for a big present. I predict my 'return' will be approximately... £60 spendage? I don't mind. Family seem to be getting better at getting presents for me as I get older!
  2. *takes off pretentious hat*
  3. THE COMPETITION IS TOO FIERCE I MUST SHIELD MY EYES
  4. Oh for sure - those moments without the main character are probably my favourite ones. I like the angry man in the car, the devilish dude in the jail and the burning man, the man in the bar with the gun... Those moments properly challenge the rest of the movie and reassert the notion that we shouldn't take reality for granted in any way, shape or form. But as a movie I think the pacing struggled to steer the audience back to the main character at times, and as a movie it takes a while before you start to even realise he's the main character, let alone really start to wonder where his development is going. I'm glad several of you gave this film the chance it deserves; I hope y'all keep your minds extra-open for Koyaanisqatsi in a few months time
  5. I haven't slept for over 16 hours! Been to town with shorty to fail to do xmas shopping - bought myself some headphones and renewed my railcard. Now buying random shit on amazon. Got a "cat & Kitch" jigsaw for my dad's wife and now got to try and find something besides fucking coasters to buy for my mum. Need to pack my bag for tomorrow, tidy room a bit, get drunk, try not to fall asleep too early, then remember to set alarm and then actually get on the damn train tomorrow.
  6. Isn't Viva la Vida, like, a total rip off of some other dude's song? Joe Satriano or some dizzle...
  7. Well you can say that for zombie films in general, Aalborg; nobody in those films seems to know how to deal with zombies, and spend the first third of the film going "WHAT ARE DESE FINGS?!!?!?!"
  8. Supergrunch; could you elaborate on the self-awareness being a 'get-out clause'? It's an interesting point, but I'm not totally sure I know what you mean! Would I be right to say that I thought the movie was modernist? The almost passive acceptance of clashing theories and interpretations of reality co-existing, and no real drive to pick any one 'correct' answer. I agree that observation is rather key, but I think the self-awareness comes from the function of interpretation - I think you cover that when you say ~"observation in relation to communication between individuals"... I also think 'interpretation' itself does provide a 'get-out clause' for the shakey levels of scientific accuracy, and excuses the films occasional "[insert philosophy] 101" feel, as if these brainheads are trying their best to explain these complex matters in the most layman terms they know. I think the reason why I dislike the ending of the movie is because for the large part the film simply doesn't care about storyline at all. Half of the segments aren't even directly related back to the main character - how do we explain that? ganepark; as far as teh film goes, we can safely say that from the moment the guy gets hit by a car to the end of the movie, he definitely isn't awake (in the traditional sense...) for all we know he was asleep the whole movie. Maybe he died when teh car hit. Maybe he's in a coma. Maybe the whole film is the girl from the train station's dream. You're right to say that this is a key point of the movie - the movie asks you what is reality? and you have to realise that it is a struggle to answer this. I hate typing about this film because my mind keeps jumping from thing to thing so I can't keep up. But yeah... uh... Don't do this right away, but defintely re-watch it again when you're in the mood. I think I've watched it once a year since I first saw it about... 4 years ago? Improves with every watch.
  9. Potential, but only if they follow the Top Gear format more closely. Get away from a single couch scenario and discuss amongst themselves rather than at the camera. The two guys, Yug and Matt, need to stop giggling at everything Yahtzee says and their personas need to be stronger. Weird seeing Yahtzee's face. His little segment on Point n' clicks was well made, and Matt's Rant seemed to have potential but he lacked emotion and it ended too soon. The gaming skits could be good, but they were a tad predictable this time around. Yahtzee should be the 'chair' and the other two should bounce off him rather than the Yug dude. I didn't care what games they were playing, and there didn't seem to be any real focus on some of their discussions - xmas games, MMOs... A lot of rambling and too much sitting on the fence between being informative or being humorous. But, of course, there really ought to be an interesting gaming show on TV. As I say, a Top Gear styled show could be awesome beyond awesome. Good luck to the guys, they're brave for sticking their mugs on film and giving it a go. I just hope Yahtzee doesn't continue to wear that blatantly contrived wardrobe forever!
  10. Hey there Pantsu, welcome aboard. I'm not normally Baby Jesus, but today I woke up that way.
  11. Wahey, some people watched it Glad to hear that killthenet, I've been meaning to check out some of his other movies so I'll try that first. Daniel; It's not going to be liked by everyone, but I'm pretty glad you at least gave it a go. For me, there are two sections which are hard to follow - the bit with the four guys (then the old man up the telephone mast) and the bit with the boy/alien, as he just talks fast. Also the latter part of the movie, starting with the main kid asking the girl what it's like to be a character in a dream, felt ill placed or ill paced. We'd just had a nice, happy bunch of stuff on holy moments and presentness then it was all a bit down and dreary from there. The animation, too, wasn't as strong. Oddest thing is I've just had a few hours sleep and I had a lucid dream/nightmare. I kept waking up, sometimes even in my own bed, or someone elses, or a bed I've slept in, then walking around and seeing people, faces, movements out of the corners of my eye that I couldn't reach. People were oddly nice to me, and I kept realising that I wasn't awake. I'd punch people and they'd stop being nice and start laughing and being all devil-like and saying I'll never escape, then they'd turn into rotting, talking corpses with blood and maggots and whatever else... it went on for absolutely ages. Thought I was in hell. In the end I started to control my dream by making the people I'd find float off into the sky. I had to really convince myself to wake up. ... Yeah.
  12. Well I've got £100 worth of stuff in my amazon shopping basket so far... With four more definites to get. Sigh! Maybe I'll just wuss out and get DVDs all round.
  13. Both of those reasons are awesome and should be upheld by all.
  14. 2008 will be remembered by me as the year I pissed away, and will no doubt be a firm foundation on which all the inevitable failures of 2009 will be made. I predict isolation, depression, anxiety and fear. I haven't really done anything this year :| Watched a lot of TV, drank a lot of alcohol and smoked a lot of cigarettes. Made a few friends and a few mistakes. I think I've grown taller this year, probably due to all the time I spend in bed. Perhaps my mistake was in not making any new year's resolutions. Well I made one last year, and that was to get a girlfriend. Be careful what you wish for! The timing was all wrong. Corsets and cooking cloths. Stacked pajamas and peanut butter. *wanders off muttering to himself*
  15. I still can't believe that people buy singles.
  16. Ditto on that, brutha. Browsing amazon/play/threadless but not really sure what to get anyone. Facebook says my sister likes Desperate Housewives so I can just get her season 1... but then I always get everyone DVDs, which isn't very thoughtful and nobody watches them like I do. Plus for every DVD i see for someone else, I see two for me. Sigh. In fact, I started this browsing on sunday. Since sunday the price of pretty much everything in my amazon shopping basket has gone up. Except The wire, which went down a penny. Besides this, I suppose I ought to call my mother and let her know I am coming home for chrimbo and, in fact, I'll be jumping on a train two days time. I ought to wash more clothes... Tidy my room a bit... pack my bag... I don't know, just do anything with myself besides sitting around, napping. Last night Dan came over, we watched Waking Life then played some Fluxx, 1,000 blank white cards and a bit of poker before nami started falling asleep on the table. Was a pretty fun night - Dan got to see the mental side of us. I hope we didn't scare him away.
  17. Weeds Season 3 had a crazy cliff-hanger to answer to, and it sort of just reduced the situation and made it easier to deal with. The first seven-or-so episodes were crazy piled upon crazy, and there were some really good stoner episodes, but from what I remember about the end of the season it kind of tailed off and didn't end with much of a bang. Great show, though. The characters are always interesting and there's lots of humour there. Still feels like Desperate Housewives for some reason, though. Too many pretty people, or something. mmm... Mary-Kate...
  18. Feck how much gets spent on you, how much do you spend on others? I would say I spend far more than I receive. Average around £20-25 per person, but I probably only get about 8 presents.
  19. Waking Life for this sunday. Give it a chance, alright? Me, nami, shorty and Dan Dare watched it last night. Hopefully some of them'll add their comments...
  20. Ok, will update original post with the additional BISHes.
  21. WOO! It's still light and I'm waking up Gota SPLIFF on its way over, dead chuffed. Then going to watch Waking Life for the film club, which everyone else has forgotten about, then sit and stare at a wall, or something, because Shorty's xbox has broken again. May actually hook up the n64 or the GC, though!
  22. Domster just did a magnificent thing in beating Tellyn gives me a fighting, yet tiny, chance to try and snag 2nd. I think I'm looking alright for 3rd place, though. If I beat dom 5-0 and dom beat tellyn 4-1... Things are looking good for me
  23. Finky, freakin' come. Fuck expectations, alright? I'm ready to buy my monday ticket. Flinky, what time do you want to set out? If we meet at brighton station we'll change at Croydon, but if you come down to portslade we change at hayward's heath. Leave portslade at 11:47, get to haywards heath at 12:09 and get the train at 12:18 that plants us at st albans at 13:39. However, if we leave brighton at 11:49 we arrive at East Croydon at 12:23, then get the 12:32 that arrives at st albans at 13:24. I genuinely need to know if you guys are coming, because if you're not then it'll be easier for me to go via Hayward's heath. You have no excuse not to come. Seriously, it'll be fine. Nobody knows anyone. Do eeet! Who cares if you're shorter in real life. I'm... lots of things in real life that I'm not online.
  24. Eddage; yeah, you're right that doesn't make sense. I guess it is optional, but just better when it's faces. I'll change that, though!
  25. Get in there, LazyBoy :P But seriously - I spent most of the year getting over one relationship then fucking up another one. I think 2009 will be a year of sorting myself the fuck out so I can actually relate to other human beings. I like to think I 'set up' Short and nami, and they're going strong, but before them the last pairing I set up was... not good. Lots of flying objects, self-harm and police intervention (but not like that described so visually on the previous page :P), so I think I'm generally just no good at it all.
