Do Nintendo now exist outside console generations?
Retro_Link replied to Retro_Link's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Really it's a portable home console. For many it may well just stay docked - or at least not leave the house. However, in the hands of the Japanese market and those outside of Japan who spend a long time commuting, then it becomes a handheld device. -
Do Nintendo now exist outside console generations?

Oh no, I was just curious. For me, Nintendo are carving their own space. In creating a functioning hybrid, it's like a brand new consumer device. Incremental consoles may see console generations draw to an end anyway, but they're still an unproven concept depending on whether the market accepts them. -

I think they were outsold by the other two consoles come the end of the generation though right? -
I really hope the Switch has Wii U games for digital download. I'd love to play Tropical Freeze, Yoshi's Woolly World, Captain Toad and Pikmin 3 on it. Or you know, Switch ports with additional content like Mario Kart/Splatoon are doing. Also, Tropical Freeze at No. 20...? Damn I detest the NSMB art style. Can't. Look. At. It.

Had to Youtube it...

Nintendo have seemingly been transitioning this way for a while, choosing to do their own thing with their consoles - giving less and less regard to what their [perhaps once] competitors are doing, and when they are doing it. Coming off the back of the Gamecube/PS3/Xbox, the playing field was level... but since choosing to release an SD console with the Wii, the definition of console 'generations' became blurred. Was it about specs anymore? Should the Wii be grouped in with the PS3/360? Fans perhaps desperately grasped at such - so as to not feel Nintendo were slipping out of the loop. I think it's fair to say the video game industry at large found it a stretch to class the Wii U in the same 'generation' bracket as the PS4 and XB1. Whilst it was Nintendo's next console iteration, not only did it come out significantly before the PS4 and XB1, but it struggled to share the same library of games. Now Nintendo is doing something very different again and in a sense, to me it feels like they are almost operating outside the realm of 'gaming consoles' [as we know them] as much as they are 'generations'. Nintendo has carved potentially a very different space in the market for itself. In so, they have distanced themselves even further from Sony and Microsoft - both in terms of what they are releasing, now as much as when. And to me, that's an exciting prospect.

Dirt 3 should be pretty fun to try too I'd have thought.

So the bar I've been working in is being taken over. Gonna need to find myself a new job... probably another bar job, but eventually I'd like to find something different - charity fundraising perhaps. For now, does anyone have a good CV template they'd recommend? I haven't updated mine in a good while and would like something pro looking/stand out. There are those Go Sumo CV templates - do employees look fondly on those do you think, or are they a bit... try hard?

New Nintendo franchise - Poochy and Switch: Crime Busters :p But seriously, a Poochy and Switch 3D adventure platformer in the Woolly World style. Of course I'd settle for him (and Non-Specific Action Figure) in Mario Kart and Smash. -

3D printed docks to slot your screen into... Mario gloved hand, Master Sword pedestal etc... -
$299/£250 I think.

They should have drawn the Gamepad getting thrown against the wall and it lying in three pieces on the floor... "GREAT SCOTT!"

I apologise for not having read the last few pages in the thread before posting, but entering this thread on the current page and reading, it just seems like you're totally overreacting and having a go at people. That's how it will be perceived by other people reading the thread too. Also, there's far more to the other situations you've mentioned than that - you're oversimplifying. -

Dazzybee, you're the only one I can see being childish today, and dragging other members names in to it as well. -

Read that as R2D2, and couldn't think what you were referring to... that Star Wars VR experience...? Red Dead would be defining. It almost seems too big a game for Switch. -
It's a static image. I thought it was perfectly obvious from my explanation what I was referring to. Strange that everyone else seems to have grasped the concept.
-
Yeah I wouldn't consider it to have one either - although I do just generally like the way you enter into it, via the profile and the zoom in. Bring it back.

OK, looking again at the picture of the screen docked, there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for the screen at the front to be showing. It could be covered and you could still remove the screen - by wrapping your fingers around a 'handle/ridge' on the back, where the dock also drops away. Surely the preference would be for the screen to be fully protected... unless it does need to be showing for some functionality.
-
Could well be. The thing that bothers me with that is you're effectively grabbing the screen no... there's next to no edge to grab. Surely you shouldn't grab the screen, whenever you do press a screen you get that distortion ripple. A better design would be a push down to pop-up eject, or an eject button somewhere on the console. But yeah they just grab it in the video.

I very much like the idea. The thought of having to turn the Right Joy-Con upside down to use the pointer on the bottom seems a bit of a stretch, but maybe there's something to it. Perhaps it wasn't a reflection of the curtains after all?...

I was trying to think what the start-up screen for the Wii was, and when I Youtube'd it, I found the reason I couldn't, was because there wasn't one. I guess I had assumed it could/should have been this... I think we all remember the Gamecube fondly for it's jolly intro jingle. I enjoy the orchestral sound I get when I boot up the PS3... And whilst the N64 didn't have one specifically, each game would often have it's own themed N64 logo. I remember OOT's classy, silent, colourful spinning logo, Banjo Kazooie's dragonfly, And Diddy flying around in his plane. Everyone wants to get straight into their online competitive games these days; but the intro jingle gives us that 5 seconds of fun that reminds us we're gaming - it puts a smile on our face, setting us up for a hobby to enjoy. Should the intro jingle return? or would the majority of gamers these days spend that intro screen shouting "come ooooon..." at their TV? Not gonna lie, I want that Will Smith collaboration, ala @21secs :p

Yeah I know, single piece of plastic, so you press both left and right at the same time with a diagonal movement. Sorry I don't understand the point. Why would you want to press two separate individual buttons at the same time? EDIT: Never mind, I'm tired, I get you now :p Left and Right.. god knows why I was thinking of Up and Left/Right... But I still don't understand the point.
