Out if interest, have you heard that from anywhere other than myself and @Guy?

None of the controls are that bad in their own right, I just don't like how they made the game feel so stodgy, like wading through mud. Stop, swing. Stop, swing. Ugh. If this game was called "Motion Swordsman" and was about standing still and waving the Wii remote, I'd have been impressed. It wasn't though - it was a Zelda, and motion controls don't suit Zelda. As such, it's a joy to go back to the d-pad or N64/GameCube Zeldas, which are far more fluid.

Well, I'm glad there are more fossils - the museum is great! If there was one game I'd like to have now (instead of New Super Mario Bros 2 or whatever), it'd be this. There's something about Animal Crossing that suits the autumn so much. I'd love to come home from work, play this in bed and listen to KK Slider or whatever's happening at the time.

I'd be quite scared to meet him on a tennis court!

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes (Wii/Wii U Online RPG)
Grazza replied to killer kirby's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I don't think I can try it, that's the problem. I've experimented with online gaming and I don't have the bandwidth for it. It would cost me an absolute fortune to change my internet enough to be able to play this. With just two little changes - an offline mode + character saved on your own memory card - I'd be really looking forward to this. What S.C.G. was describing about Phantasy Star Online sounded perfect. -
I've never been excited about this game but, as I said to the chaps on Letterbox, I asked myself two questions: 1) When this is out, will I wish I was playing it? 2) Will it be cheaper to pre-order? The answer to both was "yes", so I ordered it. To me, it's not a "system seller" (although presumably it will be to a lot of other people) but as I have a 3DS, I want to play it.

Very impressive stuff. Looks exactly like the Twilight Princess version.

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes (Wii/Wii U Online RPG)
Grazza replied to killer kirby's topic in Nintendo Gaming
That's what I was thinking. It seems to me that up to and including the PS2/GameCube generation, everything made sense. Everything was tailored towards the gamer. Sure, you had to pay for it, but that's business. Since this gen, everything seems way too tailored towards the business side of things. Sorry to be a broken record, but compare Dragon Quest VIII (PS2) to Dragon Quest X (Wii): Dragon Quest VIII * Play it offline * No fees * Game can be played as long as you keep the disc and PS2 * Your save file is kept on the memory card for as long as you want Dragon Quest X * Mandatory online * Subscription fees * Game only lasts as long as the server is kept going * Your character is deleted unless you play it every 30 days In other words, they are now trying to dictate when and how we can play. Every single thing about it goes against my way of thinking. If gamers roll over and take this, it will ruin what in my opinion is easily the best RPG series ever made. -
When you say fast, do you mean something like 18 months, or much longer/shorter?

Harrods Creates "Gender Neutral" Toy Department
Grazza replied to Goafer's topic in General Chit Chat
The more I think about it, the more I think most things are gender neutral anyway - the themes Harrods has chosen are good examples. Why should one gender like those things more than another? Yes, I'd put trains with cars, but that would just be good grouping. -
I suppose it's when there is someone who makes more bits of your brain light up than even your best friends.

I don't blame you. If I could use my two 3DSes to complete some of my puzzles, I'd do so. No one ever has any pieces for me nowadays.

That is a brilliant image. People have got a point about NSMB though. I'm not going to judge it before I've played it, but I did think the graphics would be a little bit better than that. New Super Mario Bros is the one series Nintendo does seem to put minimum effort into. It's hard not to think they've said "The 3DS isn't selling. Quick, knock up a New Super Mario Bros game!" and "We need something to make the Wii U sell immediately. Make an NSMB!" BUT it's a fine balancing act. As I've said before, Nintendo would be crazy not to make one for each machine. Also, it is a very well-honed type of game and doesn't need much change. I enjoyed New Super Mario Bros on the DS much more than Rayman Origins, as good as the latter looked. So, it's a difficult one to call. We'll just have to play it and see how good it really is.

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes (Wii/Wii U Online RPG)
Grazza replied to killer kirby's topic in Nintendo Gaming
World of Warcraft - fair point. I've just looked it up and at one point it had 12 million players. Can't believe it! Some people do buy Call of Duty to play offline though. What's more, it's not mandatory online. You can play it as much as you like offline and then connect up for multiplayer whenever you like too. I can see Dragon Quest going in this direction too (optional online multiplayer), which is fair enough - I don't want to be a total luddite - but having to connect up every time you want to play? That's just alien to me. That said, you make a good point in that this might be a good business strategy for Square-Enix. We'll see! In the meantime, I hope they are not too far behind working on the next offline Dragon Quest, because I need my DQ fix... -
@Wii - Fair enough, that's not really pedantic. I'm quite pleased to have had it pointed out. And that is true, she is not in a very fierce pose, but I suppose Ameratsu is a protective spirit!

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes (Wii/Wii U Online RPG)
Grazza replied to killer kirby's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I just cannot see how an MMO can hope to be as popular as an offline game. I love Dragon Quest, I really do, but this is the first one I don't expect to play since they started releasing them in Europe. -

I think MoogleViper meant that a raptor is a bird of prey. Presumably velociraptors were named because of their similarities to birds of prey. The worst thing about raptors, however, is that there is so much confusion about what they were actually like. The ones in the film "Jurassic Park" are actually much more like deinonychus. Why they called them velociraptors I don't know. Not that I'd want either of them chasing me, so I hope this bloke doesn't create any. Heck, I'm scared of labradors.

I'll be needing one of those AC adapters now I've cast aside my DSi XL and 3DS for my 3DS XL!

It looks a lot less like Dragon Quest in the new screenshots. Plus, have they removed the cel-shading?

To be honest, I didn't know there was a problem. For what it's worth, though, I favour the "Nintendo is not what it was" argument. I found this site back in the GameCube days, when you could argue Nintendo's output was the best out of everyone's, and even the hardware was up there with the Xbox. Games like Metroid Prime, Wind Waker and F-Zero GX inspired people. As much as I love the 3DS, what is the last Nintendo game anyone could have a strong opinion about? Where are the signs they are even working on anything like that? Nintendo is just going through the motions. It's crazy - the other day I ordered New Super Mario Bros 2 and I don't even want it. I'm just spending money for the sake of it. Don't get me wrong, I know it'll be good, but is this what it's come down to? Nintendo has lost the capacity to inspire. E3 2012 was a particular lowlight. Apart from Pikmin 3, I'm afraid I'm not even on the same page as anyone who thinks that was a good way to launch a console. No 3D Mario, Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero, Star Fox, WaveRace, Pilotwings or anything to show off what sort of 3D graphics engines this thing can pull off... Even so, I like the people here and I want to experience future games alongside them. It's just that, as people have said, individuals get older and lose interest. Without a new "Wind Waker" on cutting-edge hardware with controls as good as everyone else's, you're never going to get an influx of the same type of people who used to love Nintendo so much.

Yeah, I remembered you didn't like it, Retro Link. I just think it's one of those games where you really have to know what you're aiming for (which might be why I found it overwhelming on the Virtual Console). Maybe "steep learning curve" is the way to put it? For example, you have more fun if you know which icons improve your lasers and shield meter, and aim to collect them as soon as possible. Same goes for what to do to travel the branching paths. And I still don't really know when to U-turn/somersault. Then again, I know you're a good gamer, so maybe you just don't like it.

BUMP Unwrapped and played this last night, on my 3DS XL. I've had it for a while but was saving it for the bigger screen. Just to give some background, I very much liked Star Fox on the SNES. I was no expert at the game but explored the Medium and Difficult routes as much as I could. I didn't buy Lylat Wars for the N64 (maybe the expensive Rumble Pak bundle put me off), but I downloaded it for the Virtual Console and... didn't like it much. I found it quite difficult, even struggling with the first boss. And yet, I suspected it wasn't really as difficult as I thought; rather that I just wasn't in the mood to get to grips with the N64 original on Wii. With this in mind I wasn't as excited about Star Fox 64 3D as I was about Ocarina of Time 3D. However, playing it last night, I loved it. The 3DS version must be much easier because I played the whole game through without losing a ship (apart from Slippy's, once). But that's a good thing because it makes it a lot more accessible, and I can't wait to try the harder routes and various challenges along the way. Graphics and music are brilliant. With my headphones on, the huge screen of the XL and the 3D turned on, it was quite an experience. The 3DS has been so much richer for having these two N64 remakes, no doubt about it.

Well, I think I was too grumpy about the XL yesterday, because I played it last night (Star Fox 64) and had a blast. I felt I was in space! It's not too much of an exaggeration to say the 3DS XL has renewed my penchant for 3D. Realistically, I am not going to want to play any new games on the older, smaller 3DS. Yes, the yellow-tinge on the bottom screen is a real issue, but the colours on the top screen are accurate enough. For the sake of my sanity, I am just going to load everthing onto my XL and forget about the older two handhelds, because the bigger screen really is impressive enough to make up for the fact that it's not quite so classy overall.
