Something interesting that you have learnt today.
Rummy replied to ipaul's topic in General Chit Chat
I learn that flaming hot monster munch have more protein in them than pickled onion, but more carbohydrates and less salt too. I also learnt that lots of stuff is out, or coming out, such as Phantom Hourglass and Super Paper Mario and I didn't have a clue. -
Now now, everybody says that whenever I mention the name. We've been with them since the early dial up days, and we had a year out when we first got bband cos we got it from ntl and they only offered it on BT lines, but then they gave us a pretty decent deal for like £20 a month and at the time it was faster than average, and they were one of the only companies offering it with no limits. I guess they have been surpasssed on most if not all those counts now, but throughout it all(a good 4 years now I'd reckon) we had no problems at all and they never put the price up. The only real problem has been their shitty shitty indian tech support, and trying to get them to actually send us a replacement replacement modem, which we've been waiting 3 weeks for.

Haha, trust me to come in in the middle of a fracas. Sorry, I imagine this hasn't helped things at all! Hopefully I'll be around a bit more, might check up on stuff when I'm in uni(though thats a mess and they've closed the psych building which means we've lost like 6 computer labs at our disposal) I might start looking for a new ISP soon if aol don't sort out my internet though. Bloody idiots!
-
I've not had the internet for a month, and I hadn't been around here much for a month or so before that either. I actually still don't have the internet, I'm at a mates and bored as he's in lectures so I decided to check up on my nintendo news and then got tempted by the forums and I feel like I've missed something major. Anyone able to fill me in? Where's the MPOTD? Feel free to close this if it's gonna cause problems, I'm just wondering what's been happening N-E wise. And gaming wise too, I wish I could find somewhere with a general sum up of the past two months, I rather ironically feel incredibly detatched from the world and goings on having not had the internet. Any major releases and stuff?

Only I'm running Vista(he's running XP), but how do I disable that anyway? I'm not denying it works with LAN, we're not trying to play over a LAN though, we're trying to play between his house and my house over the internet with the TCP/IP for DirectPlay option. Damn Microsoft and their gayness.
-
It is 2 I can get it to work over my LAN, and he can get it to work over his LAN, it's not the TCP/IP, I'm fairly sure it's because aspects of DirectPlay have been dropped from DirectX 10. I might just try and install DirectX9 and see if it automatically overwrites 10. I doubt I'll ever need/want 10 as I'm not a big PC gamer, but I'd still like a way to restore it if I can. McPhee, I know nothing about setting my comp up to dual boot, how do I even begin to go about it?
-
Basically I have my nice laptop with Vista, me and my mate once had a unhealthy passion for Age of Empires online, it works on ym XP comp but not on my Vista laptop(online that is). Doesn't work on HIS vista comp either. I've come to the conclusion that DirectPlay/DirectX is somehow to blame, a little reading on wikipedia tells me that DirectPlay has been Deprecated in 10. Here's my predicament, how the hell can I manage to get it to work without removing 10(which i believe can only be gotten WITH vista, so i have no way to restore it feasibly?). Is there an alternative that I can install that will do the job, or some other possibility? I considered(something I know pretty much zilch about) trying to emulated XP on my vista laptop, is that gonna be tricky business? I've heard about it before, Virtual Machines and all that I think.

DVD Player (play movies through one with a USB stick)
Rummy replied to Slaggis's topic in General Chit Chat
The SIGMATEK - XS-700 Shorty? Looks pretty tempting actually, would be just the sort of thing that I'm after myself and probably a worthy investment for just £35. Anyone know what it's like reading off SD cards, and if it scales the video to TV screens without any sort of issues(does it output at 50 ot 60hz, cos my TVs are old)? -
I dunno if this is what you're after, but I know you can buy cartridge refilling kits, and they usually come with a little thingy that you touch to the chip for a few seconds or so and it resets it to say that the cartridge is entirely full. Of course, it means you won't be able to rely on the ink levels it tells you on the computer, but meh. Of course, if the problem lies with the chip reader and not the chip, this won't work.

Dropped packets on my router and something else...
Rummy replied to Rummy's topic in General Chit Chat
LOL! For some reason Jordan's post made me laugh quite alot! I was thinking that Bogbas, do you happen to know how I can turn of uPnP and/or remove that entry from the firewall? That's what's annoying me most, I can't find any way at all to remove the thing short of restting my router's settings, which is gonna involve effort setting stuff back up. -
So, it's not something new, but I KEEP getting a ton of dropped packets in my router's(D-Link DI-524 RevC) log. I googled it a while back and found out that it was apparently due to file sharing software, and so I dismissed it. Even if they aren't, the fact the router catches them is a good thing and it's doing its job as a firewall by dropping them. However, even after not using P2P stuff for a week or so, I'm still getting them. These things came in at crazy rates too, from varying IPs, I can clear my log and within seconds the thing is already filled back up to 20 pages worth. (blackedout my IP) I did some security tests on my router at ShieldsUP! and I passed it all and took action to make sure I passed what I failed including discarding ping from WAN side. Since I started getting theese in my log though, my connection seems to be dropping sometimes/my router spontaneously restarts, and it can get quite annoying. Are the two related? I notice as well that some stuff loads slowly, and sometimes I get shit transfer speeds in bittorrent, is that related at all? It also seems to think my ports aren't forwarded properly, but they are, because I forwarded it and it said that it was and I didn't change anything and now it's magically not. Anyway, that isn't the thing I'm most worried about. After some nosing around my router, looking at firewalls rules and stuff, I came across this entry in the firewall, and it had me quite perplexed as it looked rather specific. (blackedout my router's address) UTorm and IDENTStealth are port forwardings I set up under the Virtual Server, respectively for UTorrent and for stealthing responses to IDENT requests(basically something ShieldsUP told me to do, by forwarding requests to an non existent machine there'll be no response). The default Deny and Allow, as you may have guessed, are default deny and allow rules on the router. Now, my issue and question is, how did the highlighted MsnMsgr rule get there? I didn't set it, and I doubt my brother did, the local IP(.104) is what I've told the DHCP to give my sister's laptop, and she definitely didn't do it(she wouldn't know about all this stuff). So my question is, how the hell did it get there, and how the hell do I get rid of it? It's not listed anywhere under any of the tabs down the left, and in that part you see in the screen, I can't edit it! If I could, it'd have those icons next to it like the top rule, which is one I made after seeing it(because I have no idea what it is) exactly the same but set to Deny, hoping it might counteract it or something. So yeah, excuse my lengthy post, but anyone got any ideas?? P.S I left my addresses in, plz dont hax me Got paranoid.

Someone else said that to me recently, but I was pretty sure it's one of those silly Backronyms. Is Chav defined by how you dress, act, or both?

A small problem for anyone who knows their (basic)electrics...
Rummy replied to Rummy's topic in General Chit Chat
Brilliant! At first I looked and thought 'daymn! that's far too complex' but it's just a case of sticking something into the circuit, right? I assume it won't cause much extra drain on the batteries either, and stops either circuit leeching the other! I do now have a question though, what WOULD have happened if I had simply put both over the same switch, in both of the following ways? Tbh though, Ashmat's suggestion is far too sensible! I was considering trying to stick the wireless button into the same circuit(could still do it using Supergrunch's way) because our doorbell is a classic ding dong doorbell and in a rather sad way I love it too much to change it(it's been there for like 25 years or something silly). SG, would it be possible to wire a relay into a wireless doorbell button? If it comes down to it, I might just get some wireless doorbells with more than one reciever -
Haha, how very classy! When did 'Chav' become? I remember when we used to call people in hoodies Rudies, then Pikeys, and then Chavs, and then 'Chav' was the new big thing. I'm not even sure what a Chav is anymore! Wannabe chav You are 23 % chav You clearly know you are not, nor will you ever be anything even closely resembling a bonafide chav but that doesn't stop you from jumping on the bling bandwagon every now and then. There's nothing wrong with a bit of pretending though you'll never be able to hold your own with the true Burberry brigade. My chav name is Harvey-Deejay Singh!

I actually quite like these! Not religious following or nothing, but if I'm gamefaqs or I know a charcter I like is coming up, I'll usually go on and give them a vote. I just wish Yoshi could win one year, just for a bit of a change like.

Firstly, great idea for a thread! Secondly, I think I pretty much agree with your ranking! I might have to put BBC1 and ITV joint place, but where is your channel 5?!?! I'd stick channel 5 in with ITV and BBC1 anyway though :P

It's a small issue in my daily life of excitement involving crazy adventures and saving the world, and so I decided I'd pose the question to people who are bored. Basically, we currently have a doorbell, as should any half decent house(or equivalent door knocker). However, a long standing problem is that sometimes we do not HEAR our doorbell, such as it is at the front of our house near our door, and soemtimes when cooking we are at the back of our house with the telly on. My father has delegated me an apparently simple task, to put an extra doorbell at the back of the house. My question to you, is how would you go about doing it? The current doorbell runs on it's own batteries, ringing when the button is pressed(as those crazy doorbells do!). My job will be to buy a new doorbell, and then somehow make it so that it rings at the same time as the front doorbell with just the one same button press. Here's where my confusion sets in, how would I wire a new doorbell with it's own power supply into it so that each circuit does not affect the other, yet both ring off the same doorbell press? Would it really matter if I just ran them both over the same switch, or not? So far my ideas have been to get two new identical doorbells, so that both will provide and consume the same power(if both using fresh batteries of equal charge, they should theoretically run down together and not affect each other, right?). Just saying hell to it and getting a new doorbell which isn't like the old one and possibly using different power, and hoping all works for the best, or alternatively getting another doorbell that uses the same amount of voltage but isn't the same doorbell and still hope for the best. All three scenarios involving wiring both circuits over the same switch. So, fellow N-Ers, what would YOU do?

Random fact, half good half bad, a nurse at work told me about some site doing deals on phones at the moment where if you get a certain contract minimum per month, you can get free stuff like HDTVs, PS3s, 360s, Wiis(she got a wii, but she says she's still waiting). The bad news is, she couldn't remember who it was that was doing it. Anyway, this post is about me! I just bought me a Nokia 6300 like yesterday morning, and I kept my existing pay as you go O2 sim card(as I don't spend enough for contract to be worth it), which I've had for like 5 years along with my ancient samsung a800(a300? i dunno, it was a little monochrome flip phone). Anyway, of course I now have a phone that can actually do things, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any places good for free stuff like ringtones, themes, and other random stuff for my phone. Also, if anyone knows, I kind of lost my voicemail server number in the transfer, and I can't seem to get onto WAP with the phone atm, though I'm gonna contact o2 about that.

Heh, I'm only just gone 20 and yet I was recently having the exact same conversation with my friend, mobiles only became more popular with the whole pay as you go revolution around year 10, before them and at the beginning things were so different. Just turning up at a mate's house and knocking on their door to see if they wanted to come out or not, sometimes ringing up on their house phone beforehand but usually not. Now, you wanna try and arrange anything it's all with texts and shit, and everyone's just damn lazy! Nobody wants to go if nobody's going, and nobody goes because nobody wants to go...

Haha, special brew is awesome! Far superior to super Ts, though nobody seems to share my opinion on the matter.

I tried it off the yellow rca one too, but no luck there either . I can't find much in the way of user guide for the graphics chip/card, and it's not mentioned in my laptop's manual either. I'll have a look around the internet for the thing you mentioned. My main issue was trying to find out if my card/chip directly supports TV out(which the cable did say it needs to support to work) but as I said, it's a proper mission and a half to find any useful information about the Xpress 1100.
-
First things first, no, it doesn't have S-Video out, I imagine if it did things'd be so much easier, but they're not. Second, ATI/AMD appear to fucking suck major ass, the useless bastards seem to have the shittiest support ever. I can only find myself going, quite literally, in circles on their site, trying to find out whether or not my ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 actually does support TV out or not, but as I said, the site is a load of shit and I'm just circling between 3 pages that all seem to link to each other. Now, if anybody out there knows anything about this, please help me. Basically, as I said, I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 in my laptop, and it has VGA out, I currently have some cheap VGA to S-Video/Composite(it has both an svideo and RCA plug on it). I am trying to connect it up to my TV at the moment, currently through the S-Video in, but my TV is just black, flickering on occasion. After some reading around, I find stuff about find out if my card supports TV out, which I'm struggling to do as there seems to be nowhere I can find out about it! I am seriously at a loss, and it's pissing me off! Can anyone who knows, tell me what I should be doing, even if it's not specific to my graphics chip?

I try not to lend shit out, in the event it'll somehow get scuffed up. One of my best mates is terrible for it, he had a habit of breaking cases or damaging them in some way, or getting a scratch or grime on discs(I hate fingerprints on discs, I try incredibly hard to keep discs as mint as I can, it was quite a shock when I used to see the kind of preowned games that came into game). So yeah, I don't like lending stuff out to anyone, even if they're very good friends. I'll avoid it if I can, regrettably making excuses rather than just be truthful, but sometimes I do and if the person returns it all right(as they did originally in Conzer's story) then I'd let them borrow stuff again. But of course, having read this, I'm now having second thoughts. I wouldn't lend anything worth more than £50-£100 to most friends though, only family, cos I know they wouldn't mess me about with it.

I finally finished it this morning, I was losing faith halfway throughout about it turning out to be a good book or not, but in the end, I think it was.
