Gamespot US fires Jeff Gerstmann over Kane & Lynch review
c0Zm1c replied to martinist's topic in Other Consoles
Not really. The fans or enthusiasts of a certain genre will know it better than those who are not, and will be able to comment better on what's good and bad about a given game within that genre. Getting a casual gamer to review a complicated flight sim, or a hardcore gamer to review said game from a casual gamer's perspective, is dumb. -

Okay then, regarding the flight simulator review, let's all wish that every review is written by people who they're not intended to be played by and see the negative reviews explode and their respective scores fall drastically. And regarding RE4's control scheme, let's also see reviews for 360 and PS3 games written by people that don't like playing with thumbstick controls, and also PC game reviews written by people who don't like playing with keyboard and mouse. -
I didn't get to use the save system much, or zoom around the mall to keep up with events critical to the story (I read about that in the reviews) because the loading deterred me from playing the game for more than a couple of hours.

I'm no fool. The incompetence of the RE4 reviewer and the irrelevant choice of perspective for the MS Flight Simulator review makes Eurogamer look foolish, and you even more foolish for supporting it. -

I'll question the integrity of the reviews as I see fit! But I will accept those two reviews for what they are, that being that they are worthless. -

From Eurogamer's review... "It's just you won't be able to aim quickly or with precision, so it's slightly more difficult to enjoy Resident Evil 4 on the Wii." Since that's the exact opposite of what the controls are actually like in the Wii version, how on Earth is that very helpful? I think it just highlights that the reviewer isn't qualified to review Wii games. -

I think you'll find they are slip ups! The guy who reviewed RE4 was clearly useless with the Wii's controls - which risks giving the wrong impression about the controls in general. And the flight simulator review was reviewed from a casual gamer's perspective - casual gamers wouldn't normally buy a deep and complicated flight simulator, so why review it from that perspective? -
Yes, lengthy.

I don't think the Wii has the processing power to do a game like GRAW justice. I can't speak for Fight Night as I haven't played it and it's not my sort of thing. Dead Rising might have been a good game if the frequent and lengthy load screens hadn't spoilt it for me. I didn't play much of it because of that. To be honest, there isn't anything on the 360 and PS3 that I would like to see come to the Wii. There's a few I would like to see come to the PC though.

It can be said that shaking the remote to execute a sword slash in TP or a spin attack in SMG is merely a replacement for a button press but that's selling it short I think. It certainly feels a lot more involving than a button press to me. And then, there's a bit more to the Wii remote than just shaking it about! I find it difficult to go back to the old controls for 360 and PS3 shooters when I've been spoilt by the higher level of accuracy found in the Wii Metroid and RE games afforded them by the remote.

I don't agree that the controls alone are what makes Wii games good. Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, RE4: Wii Edition, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Galaxy, etc. would be great games with or without the new controls (case in point being RE4: Wii Edition - a version of one of last-gen's best games). The new controls do add something though, especially in Metroid Prime 3 and RE4: Wii Edition's case, where aiming has been made so much easier.

It really didn't. If it wasn't for my being stupid enough to buy Transformers: The Game, Heavenly Sword would be the worst game I've played this year. Little Big Planet is the obvious one, I'm really looking forward to that, and I'll probably get Killzone 2 as well. The Wii aside, I hate playing shooters on a console, but since the game is never going to come to the Wii or the PC what choice do I have if I want to play it? Most of the other games listed I have on the PC or I'm not interested in, so yeah I think it does boil down to taste.

Regardless of the scores, I would count Motorstorm as a must-have. It does have its problems, overuse of the same courses to extend the single-player, annoying load times (particularly for the vehicle selection screen), and I think the vehicles could have done with a bit more balancing (particularly for online play). But inspite of that it really is a brilliant racing game.

You said 'decent' in your previous post. If they're 'great fun' then surely that means they're decent?

Usually they're pretty good, but there has been times when they have slipped up badly. -
I think lots of people like racing games. They must do, otherwise developers wouldn't keep making them. Metroid seems to have been quite a hit with many critics, but it wouldn't be the first game where their opinions and our's (the gamers) conflict. I'm under the impression that gamers do in general like Metroid though.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition isn't bad if you've nothing better to play. I think you can still get the boxed version cheaper than the download, technically it's still a Steam game though because it needs it to run.

1. Halo 3 2. Just Cause ...the only two 360 games I've bought this year (so far).
-
It's only great value if you want all the things it can do. For a games console it is overpriced, or at least was when I bought mine, back in March for £425! In a way I'm glad I did buy it then though, since the model out now is lacking some functions, namely backwards compatability. I use my PS3 for DVD playback, a role it took over when my 360 red ringed earlier this year, so that increases its value a little for me. But I don't use it for web browsing because the interface is terrible, and I don't need it for media streaming or Linux.

I thought Motorstorm was great, especially online, and R&C is good. But I'd be lying if I said I haven't been somewhat disappointed with the PS3 overall so far. I'm really looking forward to Little Big Planet though, more so than most games.

Just wait for the VC release then.
-
When's that out then? That's the first I've heard about it I think. EDIT: Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier? It just says TBA 2008. EDIT: Are you sure you didn't mean Ratchet & Clank, Goron?
-
What's Jak?
-
It's a good reference I suppose, particularly for new IP's or games from developers that I'm not familiar with, etc. However, something like Mario Galaxy, or Metroid Prime 3, I would have bought regardless of the reviews.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but once I've played a game myself its review scores mean nothing.
