The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (26th September 2024)

I hope this comes out on "Switch 2". I just don't have time to finish my backlog and Mario Party is coming. I still have som 6-7 games to finish and that is if I stop playing PC games.

I am not even sure if I like it, but I like to finish most Zelda games.

Finished the game yesterday. 16 hearts in total, so still a few PoHs left to find. I also haven't done many side quests but will need to use a guide to find the few ones worth doing.

The final boss fight was good and the story revelations here felt good, it certainly gives some indications as to where this game stands on the timeline.

One thing, though, during the final fight I very much felt like a bystander, just summoning Echoes and keeping out of harm's way. I guess that's the role for healers and magic users in fights but it felt a bit underwhelming.

I haven't seen how much time I spent on the game but I guess it's about 20 hours to reach this point.

OK, I only found this out after I finished the game, but...

You can actually use Bind to pull that boss's arms out, which will cause Link to gun for it and start slashing at it.

Just done the first dungeon and went way of the Gerudo. I'm not sure how I feel at the moment. I'm currently running around enemies firing off ropes, keese, crows, whichever may be best and then standing back and watching them go at it in a slow and unsatisfying way.

It's crazy how many people didn't think of doing what you are supposed to do (as Glen pointed out) and as such the battle seemed like a passive experience. I used Tri a stupid amount of times when I played the game and so it was second nature to me but it seems a lot of players forgot all about it during that fight.

The combat is pretty much like that throughout the game. You can attack on your own for a limited time but for the most part you let the Echoes do the fighting.

I can only speak for myself, but the first thing I did was summon a Lizalfos, it lunged for an arm, and it did the typical flash when a boss takes damage, so I just assumed that was how it was done, so kept doing it, because Lizalfos is easily one of the fastest attacking Echoes if you lock on and keep respawning it.

Given how many seem to miss it, I just don't think it's telegraphed that well.

I'm reminded of a similar thing with Skyward Sword. Spoilers for the final boss in that game, BTW.

I went through the second phase of Demise without realising that what you're meant to do is use Skyward Strike to get past his electrified sword. So I fought him head-on, and had to carefully swipe past his defenses.

Hardest thing I've ever done in a Zelda game.

And on the last page you were saying this was GOTY material?! There best be something bombastic coming up, or you be trippin bitch

Sad to say that if you aren't feeling the combat now then I'll be very surprised if you feel any different later on.

I find that combat got better when you got some better echoes that attacks faster or are stronger so that combat does not take so long. That's when I started to enjoy combat, but yeah, given how much of a pain in the ass combat actually is, there's a surprising amount of combat in the game! But it wouldn't be a Zelda-game without monsters, I guess, and again, standing away from the chaos is the role of the sorcerer in many RPGs, so it makes sense with Zelda. It's the other parts of the game that makes it so enjoyable.

Just to make sure. Echoes that wield weapons tend to attack straight away if you lock on to a target, and then summon them in range of your target. So you can summon one, have it attack, then immediately summon another one to repeat that. This works even for the ones that cost most of Tri's Triangle thingies.

I've been having fun crushing enemies with the Platboom, especially in water. But it still feels like combat was done as an afterthought. More effort has gone into this smoothie bollocks, with most chests containing a couple of ingredients, or money to buy more ingredients. Then they just went "oooh she woman she weak" and decided this was sufficient.

It's sucking the need to explore or just travel because I know instead of being able to handle myself, I'm going to be fannying about in menus. So quick warps all the way.

Even though I still miss a few things - a couple of echoes, the last stamp card, some heart pieces and a few accessories, I think I'm done with the game. I feel like I've seen the most important stuff now and 100 %-ing the game won't make me more happy with it. I had a blast with the game, especially after getting some good combat-echoes, and I think incorporating Zelda into a game with Link seems like the next logical step.

Never thought of using the tiles...

Anyone summon a shitton of crows when surrounded by things a Darknut can't handle?

Lizalfos, always. Especially the higher level ones that can jump. Lock on to an enemy and their attack is near instantaneous.

Repeat locking on and summoning until everything is dead.

Finished off the final battle today, the passiveness was even stronger here since your ability to attack is butt fucked into oblivion.

About 5 echoes off completion according to the Deku Tree, but not sure if I can be arsed to find them all, don't know if I need another pot/bed to add to my collection

Had a feeling I'd have to type this again before long.

You can use Bind to pull Null's spindly arm thingies to give Link an opening.

No need, I saw it the first time, after I'd done it obviously. Both one-note approaches either way.

All in all, not a bad game, I think I will check a guide and get the last echoes, but dream dojo, horse racing, stamps, pieces of heart... Nah, I'll flog it.

I must say, I found the dream dojo to be good fun. I read up on some tips for the boss battles and they add a bit more depth to the battles. Try it out. :)

I've done some of them, but the ones where they strip you of all echoes so you have to throw rocks to defeat your first enemy or whatnot weren't for me. Maybe I wasn't thinking outside of the box enough. I was only doing it to try and get that sword for Dampè, but I haven't even tried using the automatons he has given me already (all 2 of them)
