I started the game this morning. Wow! Didn't expect to be beating up thugs and then doing some karaoke.

The story seems to have started strongly. I'm starting to feel hooked. As much as I love a good story I hope there are lots of things to do rather than watching a ton of cut scenes.

I saved at the first available phone box and switched it off. Im busy for the remainder of the day but i'm eager to dive into experiencing my first yakuza game soon.

I'm almost always about gameplay over story in games and usually don't even care that much about what is happening but I'm all in on the story for Yakuza 0

I'm not sure how far you are now (I'm only into Chapter 2 after nearly 4 hours of play) but beating the 'boss' of chapter one was oddly satisfying!

I suspect cutscene are going to take up most of the 30+ hours in this game but, for the moment at least, I think I'm OK with that.

It has some serious Shenmue vibes :hehe:

I'm only on Chapter 2 too but after 7 hours of play time. I've just did a scenario whereby I had to avoid a drunk from hitting me for 30 seconds, became a producer during a tv shoot and i've just persuaded this lass to stop her smelly knickers selling business (that side quest was creepy).

Im about to move the story on now.

Haha.. I'm still on chapter 2 and haven't done any of that

I've danced a couple of times at the Maharajah, played a little Space Harrier, stole money from a beast of a man, helped some nerds pretend they're proper punks at a concert and started a friendship with a girl at the bowling alley with huge hands (she likes my form  )

I'm slowly learning more about those real estate guys but keep getting distracted!

I'm well over 7 hours in now.. and I'm still on chapter 2

I feel like things are dragging a little, partly because of the nature of the mission but also because I keep getting interrupted by side missions that I'm finding difficult to ignore! If it wasn't for so many games battling for my attention, the distractions would be welcome but I almost feel like I can't be dedicated so much time to this when I have other games to enjoy.. but that's my problem :red:

It will calm down a bit once you start progressing through the chapters.

I'm well into Chapter 3 now after 12 hours and I'm getting a little worried that I might be getting bored of it somewhat :hmm:

Hopefully the feeling passes but I'm not sure I'll make it through 17 chapters without taking a bit of a break every now and then!

I'm now on Chapter 10.

This game is just fantastic! I'm blown away with the main story and narrative. So many twists and turns. Very dramatic and some parts moving. Even better than the story telling in TLOU.

Some of the side quests are indeed strange but some of them have so much depth. Reminded me like the side quests in Witcher 3. Less about fetching but rather an actual scenario or story.

One side quest made me grin like a cheshire cat. This kid wanted a magazine that was wrapped which was in a vending machine. The magazine was a porn mag. I then had to avoid being seen to buy the porn mag from the vending machine (due to the embarrassment of seeing buying one). It was hilarious.

There are so many great side missions. Call me a fan!

Interesting! How many hours have you invested?

I feel like I've been getting bogged down so much with the side quests and every other distraction that it's been a struggle to stay motivated..

Around 40 hours. I've been doing every side quest I have cone across. I'm less interested in the mini games if im being honest.

I'm really enjoying it.

40 hours?! For some reason I was under the impression that this was quite a short experience but haven't read some comments on this game (including the ones in this thread), I'm sold. Going to order it tomorrow and play through it once Uncharted 4 has been completed.

Did you order Yakuza 0, @Goron_3?

I'm on Chapter 5 after investing more than 16 hours into the game but I'm genuinely considering binning it off!

Despite the crazy humour and intriguing story, I'm finding myself bored and wishing it would flow a little better. The gameplay just isn't that fun, generally :hmm:

If you haven't purchased it, give me a shout and see if we can strike a deal! The condition is like new!

Not yet! I'll probably wait until the weekend. I'll be picking it up with another game, probably Gravity Rush 2 or Nier. Not sure yet though.

Sad to hear you didn't see to love it...I know @Blade loved every second!

I finished this the other day.

I want to get rid of the negatives out the way first. My initial thoughts of the gameplay were not good. I found the combat system unresponsive and clunky. I also was shocked how restrictive the main open area was as I bumped into invisible wall after invisible wall. This is something that should not exist nowadays and reminded me of PS2 games.

The combat became a lot better and fun as more abilities were unlocked. To be honest I really came to grips with it during the final section of the game which was a little disappointing as it was nearly over. The slugger style of Majima is my personal favourite style of combat. The combat though, once you got the hang of it was a lot of fun.

Now, in my view, where the game shines is in its story and character development. The story is a criminal gangster power struggle. The range of emotions that it takes you through is outstanding. One minute i'm grinning and the next i'm gobsmacked to wanting to burst into tears. The storytelling in this game is nothing short of outstanding.

The ending got me

The side quests are also great too. There are a range of scenarios from the most weird and uncomfortable to learning a few life lessons. Some of these are full stories. I found this refreshing after spending 80 hours playing FFXV over the summer that had made me carry out countless boring fetch quests.

Overall, I absolutely loved this game. Once it clicks playing through the game is an amazing experience. I now consider myself a fan and I am so glad that I gave the series a chance. I think everyone else should too.

@Blade what are your plans for the rest of the series then? Kiwami is easy enough to pick up next as the remake of 1 but after that is where you’ve got decisions to make as 6 is the next release and Kiwami 2 doesn’t have a date yet.

I will definitely pick up Kiwami. The rest of the series i'm unsure about. I'm tempted to just wait for Kiwami 2 as I hate to spoil the character development, relationships and ongoing plot by jumping straight to 6.

Spoiler

Makoto has got to be one of my favourite damzel in distress characters ever. You go from feeling that Majima cannot kill a blind girl, feeling emotional going through her struggles and thinking she is a bad ass when she stabs someone with her stick! I really cared for her.

But but why didn't she recognise Majima at the end. There is not that many one eyed yakuza around! I was almost shouting at the TV.

Also that watch at the end...

I loved all the main characters and the relationships. The battle with Kuze in the sewers were nothing short of outstanding.

I'm actually going to pick it up from CEX as I have a whole bunch of games to trade in. We have limited space in our apartment so I'm going to just pick up all the stuff that I'm never going to play again and sell it off. Not sure what it will be worth but more than enough to cover Yakuza 0 and a few more games.

Thanks for the offer though!

Ah.. no problem. I might stick with it anyway

You may have picked a bad time to buy, though, as I believe the game is now selling for £30 in CeX (it was £22 when I bought it from there)

Yep, there’s no other game like it. Not that I’m aware of at least. The way they effortlessly switch between comedy and drama in the Yakuza series is incredible.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on Yakuza 6 in March. :)

Just over a month since my last post but getting the opportunity to play anything on PS4 right now is proving difficult!

I currently have the game suspended midway through Chapter 10 and definitely feeling like I'll be seeing it through to the end

The fact that I'm over the half way point, at least in terms of chapter numbers, makes things feel less daunting and that I'm actually getting somewhere.

I see Kiwami on offer on PSN right now but I don't feel like I want to commit myself to another game in the franchise, at least not right now..

Jim is once again on point. I've been saying for years that open world games have become far too big for their own good. Far better to have a smaller, more densely packed and meaningful world to play in.

Hmm.. I never really watch Jim Sterling but I'll give this a watch later  Open world still has a long way to go to win me over!

Still chipping away at Yakuza 0 when I can. My last session brought chapter 10 to a close with the 'reveal' of how the stories in the game are linked.

Before ending the chapter I obtained the 'In watched it for the trophy' trophy which I didn't know was a thing :red: I didn't get a trophy for each video.. I tried :heh:
