Sheikah Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Nintendo are definitely not too diverse for their own good (far from it!). That list just shows the top 4 games sales wise on offer - it doesn't show the range of games on offer on the system, nor does it make mention that 2 of those involve Mario. The biggest take home is that most of their games are made by Nintendo - a sure sign of a lack of diversity. Edited August 16, 2016 by Sheikah
Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 The biggest take home is that most of their games are made by Nintendo - a sure sign of a lack of diversity. Nintendo develop the most diverse types of games in the industry, that list that H-O-T put up proves it. Most developers concentrate on two or three genres, not 24.
Sheikah Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I don't care if they develop more types of games than any other one company. They are still one company, and one company alone cannot produce diversity to float an entire console.
Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Great, so we're agreed. They develop a huge number of genres, but they need third party support to plug a few gaps. Gritty shooter and openworld collect-a-thon being the most obvious.
Rummy Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Genres are too broad and vague. Diversity within matters too.

Goron_3 Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 The genre that Nintendo dominate is platformers. What they completely lack is western RPGs, FPS titles and sports titles. Basically, anything that appeals to people outside Japan. They desperately need to procure some exclusives or they won't appeal to Western games. On SNES they got SF2 Turbo and on the N64 they dominated FPS and sports titles. Where are those games going to come from now?
Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 In terms of first and second party output, there's no issue, especially when you combine 3DS and Wii U software. Third party software is and has always been the issue, and that's where you find all the shooters and western RPGs/openworld games, and FIFA.

Actually combining 3DS and Wii U highlights the problem even more and it shows why 3rd parties support Nintendo consoles with platformers and party games. Its very clear who Nintendo are targeting with their own software. The main issue, and this was clear with the Wii U, is Nintendo have zero strategy when it comes to software.

Splatoon, Xenoblade, Starfox, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 3, Metroid Federation Force, Zelda and Mario 3D World are wildly different games, to name just a few. A multiplayer online shooter, an RPG, an arcade style space shooter, a cartoon horror game, a strategy game, a first person team based shooter, an adventure game and a 3D platformer. 3rd parties support Nintendo consoles with platformers and puzzle games because they sell well on Nintendo machines and are cheapter to make than a gritty FPS or openworld game. You've basically just made my point. Thanks. Most of those games have little appeal to Western gamers hence why Nintendo miss out on big western third party games. And that's the end of that convo. Moving on...

Most of those games have little appeal to Western gamers hence why Nintendo miss out on big western third party games. Yep, Splatoon selling 4 million and outselling Bloodborne and the Order combined has no appeal to western audiences whatsoever. No one cares about the 7+ million selling Mario Kart 8. A 2D platforming level creator selling 4 million copies, MEH, why bother? 5 million people bought 3D World by mistake because clearly it has no appeal to western gamers. Ditto the 5 million selling Smash Bros Wii U.

Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 It's almost as if those games were purchased by Nintendo fans who own Wii U's. Yes, that's usually how it works. Fan of game buys game.

Ditto the 5 million selling Smash Bros Wii U. How many consoles did these games actual push/sell? Clearly not enough. The problem is that these games are being bought by those who already have the console. They aren't expanding Nintendo's audience and are only appealing to the Nintendo core. It's stuff like this that has led the company to have an ever decreasing fanbase and console sales, with the exception of the Wii, of course.
Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 It's almost as if those games were purchased by Nintendo fans who own Wii U's. Mario Kart 8 sold more than Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 and Driveclub COMBINED. Which do you think is more appealing to western audiences? Mario 3D World sold double what Uncharted 4 did, the PS4s flagship title. Software appeal is far from Nintendo's problem.
RedShell Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Bloody hell... Can we get some damn NX info already!?

So, just to clarify, you believe that the audience for those games is identical? You believe that someone who walks into a shop to buy a game like The Witcher 3 may buy a game like a Captain Toad or NSMB instead? Question. Do you also think that someone who predominately listens to heavy metal music listens to Taylor Swift?
Kav Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I'm just saying random figures here to make my point so don't shoot me on them, but: On console A, 5 games are available. On console B, 100 games are available. Given the lack of quantity available on console A, I'd expect that fan base to purchase more of the individual titles. Given the quantity available on console B, I'd expect a larger total number of sales of all software combined. Given the number of titles available, I expect console B to outsell console A drastically.
Ronnie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Of course not. But next time don't say something like Most of those games have little appeal to Western gamers When that clearly isn't the case. Nintendo games have far more broad appeal. Sales wise Nintendo software does very well.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Bloody hell... Can we get some damn NX info already!? That would ruin all the fun in here, though.
Kav Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 That would ruin all the fun in here, though. I'm about 99% certain that NX info will bring about a shit-load more fun!
Hero-of-Time Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I'm about 99% certain that NX info will bring about a shit-load more fun! For better or worse.

Sales wise Nintendo software does very well. To Nintendo fans, yes. I am not denying this. But again, they don't do well with traditional western games, who like games like The Witcher, Halo, GTA, sports titles etc. For them, there is no incentive to buy a Wii U or another Nintendo system. Software sells systems. They need system sellers to the tens of millions of people that have NO interest in purchasing their home consoles. That's the reason why the Wii U failed so hard. Anyway, we're going round in circles. Let's move on.

Mario 3D World sold double what Uncharted 4 did, the PS4s flagship title. Software appeal is far from Nintendo's problem. Nintendo's games are so concentrated in one area (and lacking diversity) that they all sell to the same subset of people. It's why so few consoles shift even though they have a good few individual games that have shifted millions of copies. You're using sales to try prove your point, but ironically they have proven ours - a clear lack of diversity in appeal of the games they make.
