I feel like I've made an internet enemy!

I wouldn't say so, I think that you are misunderstanding the intentions behind why people are saying what they are. You're raising the fair point that a lot of women/men are abused and trafficked through the current prostitution.

But many others are raising the point that prostitution, the act of exchanging having sex with someone for money, is not in theory an awful thing. It's the abuse and underground nature of the industry that allows the bad to taint what could be a reasonable thing.

In short, you're talking about the industry at present and everyone else is talking about what it could be.

My only problem with it is that the sex is relatively shit. It's like one night stand type of sex... without a serious connection to the other person, it's only about 25% as good as when you do it with someone you actually like. At least for me. No matter how intense and "out there" it may be, meaningless sex is absolutely nothing compared to even the most monotonous sex with someone you care for.

As for prostitution itself, I see nothing wrong with it as long as it's consensual. I'd never do it, but I won't judge anyone who has or plans to.

I'd much rather have loving relationships, as i find the sex is far better with someone you love

just something i've noticed in this thread on prostitution......why are we focusing solely on female orientated prostitution? there are just as many Gigolo's in the world

Flip the comments above on how it affect the prostitute, do anyone's views change on the issue? because i get this very strong feminist vibe from this thread that its bad for women, and i have to admit my first thought when this issue is brought up is that of women, i only thought about male prostitutes after @Emma's cheeky comment on all the virgin blokes fucking themselves

Well there have been barely any (academic) studies on male prostitution, despite the significant numbers.

You haven't.

It's remarkably easy to feel that way in a debate such as this, its a heated topic and unfortunately as your view is different than say, @Moogle's it can feel like you're getting a bit bombarded. That isn't a fault of either side, but debating through a forum is a lot trickier than say in person.

@Moogle is a great guy, I'm pretty sure he means nothing by it .

Moving on.

Its a tricky subject, but let's make it a little simpler on my opinion.

Do I believe a woman/man should be able to prostitute as long as they want to, they are in as safe environment as they can be? Yes sure.

Do I believe that prostitution is good the way it is currently? No, its not monitored, a lot of women and men are forced into it due to many, many reasons that I care not to name.

I guess if everyone was able to go into prostitution that was safe and provided a clean and stable environment, I don't have an issue, its a service you pay for and if someone is willing and happy to have sex 5, 10+ times a day, why would that bother me in the slightest?

I think we're done, here.

One problem I can see arising from THE RISE OF PROSTITUTES (that's what I'm calling it now if it becomes legal) is the same problem that comes from porn: it has the potential to give someone an unrealistic view on sex. If someone only has sex with a pro-stitute, they could potentially be disappointed by an amateur-stitiute (or regular woman if you refuse to play along with my word play) or expect their partner to act like a prostitute/porn actress. The constant disappointment could lead to problems forming relationships, since they will always be looking for that porn style sex.

Society loves to make people feel like scum if they can't get sex. That's what's quite sick, not prostitution.

So true. I am honestly fed up with the emphasis people put on sex. It's not some magical special time that cures all ills, it's just sex. People who have lots of it aren't any different from people who don't. Equally, people aren't somehow inferior if they're not knee deep in lady gardens/being bombarded by wangs all day (delete as applicable).

I genuinely think our emphasis on sex is the cause of a lot of society's problems. It's the whole have and have nots scenario. People who aren't/can't get sex are frustrated by the constant bombardment of "Sex is great. Everyone is having the sex, are you?". If they perceive the world as full of people having sex and they're not, people become cynical and cold to each other. It's the whole "Everyone else is getting what I deserve" scenario. I'm willing to bet people in general don't have as much sex as the general media will have you believe.

I think both of those issues are caused by our taboo regarding sex. We can't have a healthy view of it because it's not discussed openly, always seen as some dirty little secret.
