General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

GTA V matters. PS4 outsold the 360 for the first time in 32 months and that was down to the GTA V PS3 bundle. The 3DS has no major releases in september but they did release that Pokemon 3DS.

Yeah, but not significantly. It's not like it's really gonna rope in a ton of GTA fans who were holding out on a PS360 purchase, cause GTA 4 already did that 5 years ago.

It's just an added incentive for those who had not yet gotten round to buying a PS3 yet, who may already own a 360 (or for those who sold their console and are rebuying it for GTA 5), so 3DS continuing to be the best selling console isn't really unbelievable, even without new software to boost it.

If the Wii U's September sales represent a new weekly baseline (assuming that the first half of September's sales would've stayed at around 7k as it was in August would mean that it did around 36K in each of the two latter weeks of September), we could be looking at October sales of around 154K; possibly higher if the new software (like Sonic Lost World, retail Wind Waker HD and Wii Party U) and the start of Nintendo's Xmas advertising helps bolster sales further.

That would be a decent result :)

Man, the Wii U is absolutely bombing in Japan. Investors probably don't give a shit about it and are just putting money into the 3DS train.

Don't forget that this...

They basically sacrificed any potential sales they could've made over the last 3 weeks or so (however little they may be) by announcing those crazy bundles so early.

Wonderful 101 20k sales in the US. Bomba everywhere.

Amazingly though it sold more than Rayman did on the ps3/360. Rayman was a huge Bomba for Ubisoft.

Interesting to see Rayman Legends do better on Wii U than on PS3 or 360 in the US too (Wii U version did 38.85K, PS3 and 360 versions each did less than 20K). I know it did better on Wii U in the UK, but I had a bad feeling that this wouldn't necessarily translate to a similar win in the US. Glad to know I was wrong, even though it still didn't do well across all platforms regardless (and no doubt it would've done much better if it were released back in February like it was originally meant to...)

Even though it did badly overall, at least it represents a victory for Wii U, if only a small one. That's something positive you can attribute to its sales at least :)

Also, here's a a compilation of all the NPD leaks we've gotten for this month so far...

Considering GTAV outsold GTAIV's lifetime sales in 3 weeks, I'd say there's a lot of additional people that were attracted to GTAV and that it will have a significant effect on console sales.

Well clearly it hasn't affected console sales significantly because the 3DS has continued to outsell both consoles handidly.

It's just a matter of there being a bigger userbase for GTA5 than there was for GTA4. 5 will be much more frontloaded than 4 because everyone who had to buy a console in order to play 4 now already owns it. Simple really; GTA4 continued to sell over time as people picked it up along with their new PS360 consoles, but since they already own it now, they will all be jumping into 5 straight away.

Maybe it's the small fact that the 3DS is current generation and the last two are old gen (so less people are buying it before GTA had an effect on sales anyway so the bump seems less pronounced)? Or that there are 2 different consoles that can be be bought to play it? Or that people bought consoles in the months before it solely in anticipation for the game? Or that the 3DS is doing well on its own merits since having some very attractive games released?

All things you're clearly overlooking.

Like I said, GTAIV lifetime sales (including PC) were matched after 3 weeks of GTAV being on sale. So any buyers after that are people who never bought/played IV. So it's clearly going to sell millions of copies to people who never had the predecessor (or potentially the console - one would wonder why if they owned the console and liked the concept of GTA, why they wouldn't have bought GTAIV).

Couple this with the consoles being cheap, and there being other great titles like the Last of Us, and I can easily see it shifting consoles.

Don't forget that a lot of GTA4's players would've gotten the game second hand, or may have just played a friend's copy. The actual playerbase would be higher than the number of people who actually purchased the game.

Anyway, the long tail will be the true determiner of whether or not GTA5 has really expanded the audience for GTA over its predecessor. Personally, I reckon that it'll drop like a stone after its first month or so, as I don't really see it roping in many people who weren't interested in GTA before hand (the online part I suppose is different enough to potentially bring in some new people, but I can't see why the core game would expand the GTA audience, outside of maybe the UK's expanded population meaning that 2001-03 generation kids who've never played GTA before might pick it up...)

A lot of people will get GTAV second hand too.

It's completely unarguable - GTAV has sold/will sell fuck loads more copies than GTAIV, ergo it is selling to many people who never got IV.

GTA5 isn't really readily available 2nd hand just yet because it's new. GTA4 took about 5 years to reach those sales numbers so it's not hard to see how people who bought a 2nd hand copy of GTA4 might end up buying a new copy of GTA5.

As I said, we can't really tell if the audience has expanded until we see how the long tail does (and I would be shocked if it wasn't much more frontloaded than GTA4 was...)

My point is that preowned GTAV copies will litter the shelves in due course and be subject to second hand sales the same as GTAIV was. So any people who waited for a preowned copy of IV could be just the same sort of thrifty people waiting on V preowned. Even if you argue that preowned IV buyers were won over to buy V new, I'd still argue that a game of such commercial success won't have done well mostly through previous preowned sales. It's just not that kind of game that most people care to pick up preowned. So really we may as well just compare new sales. Also remember that GTAV on PS3 and 360 bested IV lifetime sales that included PC.

There's no doubt that this is the fastest selling game of all time to date. A game like this is bound to shift a substantial chunk of consoles to the uninitiated. Whether they bought a console prior to its release, or after, or even in the near future. This game has power.

Killzone bombed and the Vita I think only did 40k so it’s still a platform on life support in the US.

I don’t think the Wii U Japanese bundles are what is causing the low sales. Before the bundles were announced the platform sales were still in the gutter.

3K weekly sales can’t be excused they really cant. Wii U sales in Japan are awful as there has been very little games released. Console Zelda games are not that popular over there and the Japanese 3rd party support is non-existent. The bundles will help but it won’t be long till the wii u sales go back to under 10k a week.

Not sure what Ubisoft can do with Rayman. The game bombs every year and it’s clearly a character which gamers just don’t resonate with even though the games review very well.

Seems that the PS3 did 216k. The 3DS selling more than 216k with no major release is pretty damn good.

MH4 showing them legs. Beastly!!

No Rayman Legends in there so must of only sold about 2 - 3k.

New Wii U bundles in two weeks so next week's wii u sales should be amazingly low. I dread to think what the number will be.

I'm wondering if the new bundles will even see the Hardware sales bump up to 20 - 30k?

Wii Party U only charted #38 in the UK top 40 individual chart.

When are Nintendo going to get the message that people don't care about the wii brand anymore and it's time to move on to something else.

On the plus side that argos 2DS bundle see to do well as the two DS games that came with it charted #10 and #11. Would post the chart but on phone.

I don't understand, is this good? It's a bit hard to say without some qualifying statements about how much development time/cost went into it and how many Wii Us were sold by this time.

Yes it's good. Capcom are very happy with the sales and why wouldn't they be. It's a port of a port of a port. Also 500,000 sales on a console that has sold around 4,000,000. That's a very high attach rate. We might even get MHU4 though that would take some time to happen.

Well as I should imagine the game was pretty cheap to produce. To be fair it was a port of a 3DS games which was a port of Wii game!

However it does say a lot about the industry today when half a million sales is eyed as a failure.

I think due to the rise of the AAA blockbuster titles like COD, GTA, Battfield and FIFA (most of which release rather regularly) the industry has started to see games which don't do mega numbers as instant failures.

In some respects this is true - games like Tomb Raider (2013) sold under 3 million units across all platforms, yet needed to sell 5 to break even. However there are still a lot of titles that are produced on much tighter budgets, have modest sales and the developers are happy.

I'm glad you understand why I'm asking the question! I'd say the figures are good for what is the 5th/6th version of this game now however you don't know if it bombed because some idjut could have overspent on marketting by $10million like with Tomb Raider.

True, but the Wii version sold 2.12 million, the 3DS version (which is exactly the same as the Wii U version) sold 2.28 million units and the Wii U version has now apparently sold 0.5 million. You're pushing 5 million units overall and 2.78 of the 3DS/Wii U version.

I'm pretty confident that will be viewed as a success. What's more as Nintendo themselves provided the servers for the Wii U version, Capcom will have escaped a reasonable cost.

Am I reading this correctly? They expect to sell roughly 9 million Wii U's by March because if so they are completely insane. Stop inhaling that gas or popping those pills. That is not going to happen even if there was another price drop. It hasn't reached 4 million yet, well below original targets and then revised targets again.

Yes it's like I said they haven't yet reached 4 million in a year and yet have made a forecast, the same as when it launched that it'll sell 5 million in well less than 6 months. The same prediction that completely bombed first time around and this time they've extra competition in the form of PS4 and XBONE. Well if nothing else you can't say they're not optimistic.
