General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

Interesting to see that the PS3 was the second fastest console to reach 1 mil at the time. Many people think the PS3 did badly in year 1 but on the strength of its brand name it actually matched (and outdid in some places) the 360's first year.

It was a quite staggered generation off the top of my head though, and both systems released with a prohibitive cost to some - the question I'd ask is was the 360's higher than the PS3's? PS3 had a value added blu-ray player in it to take the hit too.

The UK chart makes for interesting reading. Minecraft is doing well. Only 1 PC title in the top 40. Do people say the PC scene is dead? I honestly don't know and yet it gets plenty of ports.

Are these sales sourced from shops, online, or digital dsitribution? I think most PC gamers would be getting their games via things like Steam and other digital download services, rather than retail discs etc. Sims however is an exception in the market and appeal it has(one of the largest selling games series of all times, or am I misinformed?). People who were previous fans of the series likely won't be 'PC Gamers' as it were, and likely to buy in a shop I'd guess.

I know it's easier to do. Tomodachi Life is sticking around a good while as is MK8 but that's it bar Pokemon X at 40 and one DS title. All 4 of the console versions of Watch Dogs are still there more than 3 months after release. Will the Wii U version even chart 4 one week if/when it's ever released? I'd like to know the sales numbers for all these games rather than an arbitrary number each week. Nintendo are dead in the UK compared to the others.

That chart doesn't take into account digital distribution. If it did, I think it would be quite different.

I think that's a sad list. No variety and no wonder there's talk of the industry being in trouble.

@Rummy No I don't think it does include digital releases and that would explain the lack of PC titles. Didn't think of that. And @Daft is right, the chart would be completely different otherwise.

Destiny is on 360 but not on PS3?* Tbh I hadn't even realised Destiny wasn't exclusively next-gen - is there any notable disadvantage to the PS360 versions compared to PS4XBone?

*I'm a hasty blind idiot -.-

Yeah I looked at all the destiny in the list and somehow managed to miss the PS3 one at number 13! I think the PS3/360 gap indicates a lot of PS3 owners might have moved on to PS4s, and possibly some 360 owners too.

Xbox One's first week sales in Japan are known: 23,562

This is the worst launch since 1998 with the SNK NeoGeoPocket which did 21,471. Even the Bandai SwanCrystal did better in less time.

Console gaming really is dead over there.

I have no idea why then even launched the thing over there. Given the state of the sales of the other consoles and the general dislike of the Xbox brand over there, it was a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't think the sales of the XB1 are any kind of indicator of what the console market is like in Japan. Everyone knew the XB1 would bomb hard in Japan

I wonder if Destiny on PS3 being much further down is showing the difference between people with PS3s and 360s. Those who had PS3s have already upgraded to PS4 while its less so with 360 to Xbox One. Obviously no way to say from just that data we have but its possible.

No doubt about it. You only have to look at the continued good sales of 360 titles in the UK and especially the US. Many 360 owners seem to still be very much content with that they have and MS haven't managed to convince people that its time to upgrade.

There was no doubt it would struggle but I'd still say it is a sign of how bad the console market is over there.

Just look at Wii's post, despite the low numbers, it was still the best selling home console of the week.

NPD sales results for August are starting to trickle in. No solid figures yet but here's a few things taken from the Gaf thread.

PS4: #1 best selling

-“When lining up sales of PS4 and Xbox One after ten months on the market,” said Callahan. “The combined PS4 and Xbox One hardware sales are greater by over 70 percent compared to their predecessors.”

-"PlayStation" (PS4 + PS3) sold more than Nintendo or Microsoft home consoles.

-Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15’bundle. The holiday season is upon us we’re looking forward to bringing the best value bundles, incredible offers like the ‘Buy a Console Get a Game Free’ promotion running now and more great games as we gear up for the launches of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.”

-PlayStation 4 was #1 in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles.

-PlayStation led the month for next generation software with Madden NFL 15 for PS4 taking the #1 spot for overall software sales.

-Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition and Madden NFL 15 had their strongest sales on PS4 and were the biggest third party releases of the month.

-The Last of Us Remastered continues to have strong momentum on PS4; it was the top selling first-party title in August.

-For the third consecutive month, PlayStation was #1 in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3).

Imo they should have - because I don't think the 3DS version will have struggled for sales(especially in Japan), whereas I think the WiiU may struggle more - people might now be happy enough with the 3DS version and wait out the WiiU version. WiiU first might have helped shift some more of the actual consoles, however.

Wii U is a lost cause. It's all about keeping the 3DS afloat now.

People were paying ~£20 for a demo of Smash. You don't think they would pay for a Wii U if the Wii U version of the game was the only thing available?

Not saying they wouldn't but that would be just be a initial surge and then as we have seen with MK8 back to poor sales.

The 3DS is Nintendo's money machine right now and has to last until the next platform arrives. It's vital that the 3DS still gets big titles and for me should take precedence over the Wii U.
