Agent Gibbs Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Isn't this more of a developer issue and what they do to set up their control schemes rather than an actual layout of the controller issue? I've never really had an issue with the layouts of buttons, analogue sticks however i have, even back with the ps2 i started to find the sticks were at an uncomfortable position in relation the hand grips, and at certain tilts your thumb was stretched a bit too much As a side point why AB XY? AB are self explanatory the first two letters of the alphabet, but why XY? why not YZ? sure we eventually got Z added but why XY?

Maybe "CD", when pronounced by a Japanese in English, is phonetically equal or close to an offensive or tabooed Japanese word?
Cube Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Perhaps: ABCD was a logical option, however, if you wanted to add a third set of buttons later on: Either you have to change the existing buttons or make it look stupid, but with ABXY... You can add a third set of buttons later on. The order of the letters still make sense and you don't have to alter the layout of the existing buttons.
Agent Gibbs Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Wow cube that totally makes sense! I wonder If Its close to the truth
yesteryeargames Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 why not y and z why x and y ? why not have b and c instead of a and b
Fierce_LiNk Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 A and B = first two letters of the alphabet. So, I understand that. Could have easily been 1 and 2. Maybe it was thought at the time that people responded better to letters than numbers? Possibly. X and Y like the axis of a graph. That's how I always saw it. It's probably wrong but that's how I've always seen it.
Mokong Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 As with Cubes post you can get the answer to "why x and y and not y and z" With X and Y if a 3rd pair of buttons was added Z would make a logical progression keep it in order and without the need to change positions of teh existing buttons. If they went with Y and Z and then in the future thought they might add a 3rd pair there's no letter after Z. So if they went back to X they'd end up with YZX which would be out of logical order (brains remember orders best when in a logical order) or they could have put it in the order of XYZ but would have to move Y and Z to different positions which could confuse people if they had become used to the YZ format. Did that make sense?
Magnus Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 But what would happen if they wanted to add a fourth button? :p
Cube Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 They probably thought that four buttons would be utterly stupid, and a bit hard to reach with just one thumb.
Mokong Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 They probably thought that four buttons would be utterly stupid, and a bit hard to reach with just one thumb. Yeah considering they haven't added a 3rd pair yet and used Z and C for other buttons don't think we'll ever see a 3rd pair either
Cube Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Yeah considering they haven't added a 3rd pair yet They just went with a completely different naming system.
Mokong Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 How did I forget that Well the c buttons were mainly some sort of 2nd stick replacement
