nightwolf Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I have to admit I love Catan. I also love monopoly. I'm a sucker for both, I love playing board games with friends. But I also gathering around and watching spilt screen too. There's nothing wrong with either. I also find gaming online with friends is pretty fun too, unfortunately, a lot of my friends live far apart now for different reasons, so its fun to get together on vent and kick the crap out of a game. It all depends on the atmosphere.
Rummy Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I mostly play Catan (usually when initiating new recruits to the art of european board gaming), Puerto Rico, Agricola, Le Havre, Tirgris & Euphrates, Power Grid, Caylus, Ticket To Ride, Small World, Twilight Struggle, Ora Et Labora and Paths Of Glory. Occasionally Die Macher and Carcassonne. I see! Well, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit of that list I have played...two. Catan and Ticket to Ride. I see @bob has mentioned it, but my main kink has been Dominion after Marcamillian got me into it, with many an expansion in addition. Recently tried Magic a few times through a friend and considering getting into it more. I bought 7 wonders not too long ago because I'd seen it had good reviews/reception, quickish play time and seemed like a good game for 'warmup'. I need to play a lot more of those on your list. Ticket to Ride is an interesting one, it really truly absolutely is family friendly, and feels very basic in some ways; but the idea of routes add an element of strategy and constant paranoia that keeps you vested in the game. I'd say it's closest to the 'standard' games of childhood and familyness such as Monopoly etc but does enough to keep it interesting each time. If I list what I've played though, it's quite pitiful on scope. It'd be in no particular order Dominion(in many an expansion), 7 wonders, Gloom, Fiasco, Magic(few games at a friend's still need to get into it), Catan, Ninjato(once, over far too many hours because it was difficult to make sense of), Risk(once, felt a bit out of it and didn't quite get into it either), Ticket to Ride. Honourable mention to Cards Against Humanity, and worthy mention to 1000 Blank White Cards but that's a game that doesn't fit in anywhere really. However really Dominion has been my heaviest game in the past year. Marcamillian got base/main set as an xmas present, I played it-I loved it. Within a month or two I purchased Intrigue for myself, later Prosperity whilst one of our players bought Cornucopia which lives with me, and more recently I've bought Seaside, Hinterlands and Dark Ages. I've sunk so much into Dominon but that is really just how much I love it. I wish I could even tell you how many games or hours I've played, but suffice to say...it's probably quite a lot. The constant variety/different possibilities in it too make it almost endless. I will ask; if I love Dominion what's the best game to get/play from your list that I haven't played? My only thing with tabletop games is, they aren't always cheap. They can give quite a rich experience, but you have to depend on regular other folks to keep playability/value which isn't the case with video games. Tabletops generally need more than one person, video games...not so much. That cost and availability trade off can be significant(probably the reason we've got so many folks into it too); plus you can miss the games you don't own personally - exacerbated possibly by financial issues that you've mentioned.
Coolness Bears Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I recommend Chess.com. I use it for casual play whilst usually doing something else as you don't have to fully concentrate on the game. I prefer playing it with an actual board but I do enjoy the lack of human presence online as I find that part a bit awkward. :p (especially when people watch.) @Oxigen_Waste thanks for the board gams link. Been looking for Zertz for a while I played it like 3 times when I was in a board game society but couldn't remember the name.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Chess.com is absolutely brilliant. I'd play more if I wasn't so embarrassingly bad.
jayseven Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 @Coolness Bears I'm jayseven on chess.com - playyy meee!
Wii Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Pictionary is great craic. I can't draw for shit but I still love it. It's a great laugh especially with drink. Some of the guess and drawings are hilarious. I drew a spoon and they thought it looked like the Loch Ness monster. A spoon! Or like 1 of the cards read draw empty. How the hell do you draw that?

Wii Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I know, I thought of that after but when it's there and you've no time to think, you get brain freeze.
