Happenstance Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Any of you planning on getting this? It had passed completely under my radar until I just watched the Giant Bomb quick look of it. It doesnt look like its anything new but good enough that I will probably get it.
Deathjam Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Was undecided about this but now i pretty much want it. But there are soooooo many games around the corner right now it's crazy.
gmac Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I had a quick go on this at SDCC and it seemed pretty good, definitely a title I'm interested in.
Aimless Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Wow, shocking pop in at 19 mins! Bear in mind it's a preview build and more than likely running off the disc; installing on 360 should improve performance. I've ordered the PS3 version as the footage I've seen of it seems to run a bit better, but who knows how the finished products will compare. GMG are currently running a promotion for those in the UK: £30 on console, £20 on PC. I think they take money upon ordering rather than dispatch, but it seems unlikely you'll see it cheaper pre-release.
Retro_Link Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Preview up on Gametrailers: http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/0ymzc6/sleeping-dogs-preview Fuck this games got violent hand-to-hand combat!
killer kirby Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I think this game is coming out this week in Aus, really thinking of getting it day 1.
Deathjam Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I have already caved and pre-ordered it on steam ¬_¬
Happenstance Posted August 5, 2012 Author Posted August 5, 2012 Yeah ive preordered the PS3 version. If I had a better graphics card I probably would have gone for the Steam one instead.
Happenstance Posted August 16, 2012 Author Posted August 16, 2012 I havent had time to play a lot of this game yet but I am enjoying what ive seen so far. My thoughts seem to echo most of the reviews ive read, its not a brilliant game but definitely good enough that I dont regret buying it at launch. Also some of the music in the cars is awesome, makes me feel like im back playing Vice City again, just with a Chinese twist. The combat is ok, similar to Arkham Asylums but unfortunately just not as fluid. It gets annoying as well having a character glow red, telling you to counter but then the game not registering that button press because you did it too early in the animation (despite still being inside the glowing red time).

Happenstance Posted August 16, 2012 Author Posted August 16, 2012 ShopTo send out preorders early so I got my copy yesterday
Happenstance Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Im enjoying this game so much that I think I will probably get it again on the PC once ive got a new graphics card. Im just really enjoying the story and setting, nice to be out of the US for a change in a GTA style game. One thing I am liking more now as well is the fighting. Its still not polished as I said before but its the fact that so far guns havent been the focus of all my fights so when I do use them it changes things up.

Its still not polished as I said before but its the fact that so far guns havent been the focus of all my fights so when I do use them it changes things up. Yeah I am really loving the game too. The location really is nice and has its own unique style from GTA just like Just cause 2 did. And good call on the combat. Haven't even touched a gun yet, and it feels refreshing having an open world game that doesn't so strictly follow the GTA model, having it's own genuinely good ideas with alot of variety. Also I wholly recommend the PC version as there is a free HD texture pack and it the visuals become very sharp and detailed. Almost too much actually but not complaining! And for once, it's a good port with players reporting that the performance is very good on lower and mid range machines. Only gripe I have is that I have been playing for a few hours, probably around 5 maybe more, and im already 26% of the way through the story. But there are loads of collectibles and unlocks so there is still a way to go and Square Enix has plans for DLC being released over six months. Either way, very glad I got this, and will be vying for my time when Darksiders 2 gets released here.
bryanee Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 This is a great game. The combat is ripped straight from the Arkham games, its not as flashy or fluid but you do unlock more combos the further you get. Some of the finishers you can perform in the environment are brutal. The story aswell so have has been really good. I havent even found a gun yet. I havent progressed in the story itself all that much but I have been doing a fair few side missions which are great. They range from delivery things, beating people up to doing drug busts. There are plenty of races to take part in aswell once you unlock them. I've also been on two dates so far which were a brake from the norm. I took pictures of Emma Stones character and did karaoke with another bird which btw is a blast. The car handling lies in between the arcade handling of SR3 and the more grounded feel of GTA and it works well but it did take some getting used to. I do have one annoying problem when driving, I thought I was having framerate problems but it turns out to just be an effect the devs have used to make it seem like you're going faster, you get used to it but its annoying at first. The visuals are hit and miss, it defo looks its best at night time which is really nice to look at but in the day some of poorer visuals are more noticeable. So far its been a blast and I cant wait to play more.
Happenstance Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Just completed the main story, think it took me about just under 14 hours overall but I still have side missions to mess about with and just the fun of driving around the city. Plus with the social leaderboards it gives me a bit more incentive to keep playing to beat other peoples high speed/clean driving etc records. I thought they did a great job with the city, felt much more interesting having it set somewhere other than the US. The story overall was good but I think in the end it could have used just a bit more direction when it came to motivations and villains.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 @Happenstance What are the collectibles like in this game? Are they easy to find or is some form of guide required. I'm tempted to pick this up as it's only £29.99 at Morrisons.

You meet 4 girls while playing through the story and if you ring them up after and take them out the reward will be the lock boxes showing up in their specific part of the map. Thats only the minimap though so when you are close to one it will show up but you cant see them when you bring up the full map. I quite like it that way, means you arent looking around forever but also you cant just drive straight from box to box.

I have to pop into Morrisons later so I will see if I feel the urge to pick it up.

Press Square/X and you can see the collectibles on the map. You can also tell a collectible is nearby because the minimap will highlight thugs and they are always next to a collectible. Brilliant game, completed it yesterday. Can't wait for more. Think the story lacked a little direction at the end but still enjoyed it.
Happenstance Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Ah right thanks, I wont bother bringing them up on the map anyway, more fun this way. Dont know about anyone else but thats something ive found with this gens open world games, I dont learn the cities like I did with GTAIII and Vice City (less so with San Andreas). Thats probably mostly down to the GPS but with Sleeping Dogs im recognising more areas just thanks to driving around looking for the collectables.
bryanee Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 (edited) Just finished it along with all the cop missions and favour missions. Oustanding from start to finish, it manages to keep a serious tone whilst keeping the game fun as fook. The story and the characters are all brilliant. GTA5 has a lot to do to top this. I'd like another please so I do hope it sells enought o warrant a sequel. Edited August 21, 2012 by bryanee
Deathjam Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Well there is 6 months of DLC planned for Sleeping Dog's so maybe that will keep you going to a sequel is announced. Definitely gonna go back to this game and try to 100% it.
Magnus Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I thought this game was pretty great! You need to get in on the Sleeping Dogs action, @Dog\-amoto. It'll make the wait for Grand Theft Auto V easier.
