dan-likes-trees
Always been curious as to the lack of love for this, considering so many people here love The Wire / Battlestar / the other big American shows. Bought the DVD of Season 4, watched a good ten episodes in the last few days... outrageously enjoyable!
Magnus
Mad Men is awesome. It's just a shame we'll have to wait until next year for season five.
ipaul
Yeah it's pretty good.
ReZourceman
Hmmm. I'm about 3 episodes in but havn't watched more yet. It hasn't super duper grabbed me, but I will persist. (Breaking Bad ftw more tbh)
Magnus
Mad Men is a slow burner. It definitely takes more than three episodes to realize how brilliant it is.

dan-likes-trees
Yeah it's pretty good. In fairness, that thread only has about 6 posts, which is what I mean, surprised noone else really seems to love it. I guess potentially everyone seems to be watching at different points, DVD, BBC (now Sky), online which prevents discussion. And dunno, I was pretty hooked after a couple episodes... give it another try though anyway ey :P Finished Season 4. Whaaatttt! In other news, the Peggy / Don platonic relationship is by the far the most stunning thing in the show.
chairdriver
There's a girl in college who dresses like the ginger one. It's quite stunning, but then, you get over it.
Supergrunch
Mad Men is pretty cool - I've watched the first 3 seasons and enjoyed it. But I find it's all a bit one-note, and am amazed it gets held up next to things like The Wire. Still, it's good, and I also like the Peggy/Don relationship. Does she have outrageously big boobs? I love how the big leftwing newspapers kept banging on about 'mad men fashion'. Totally never caught on. Diageo
I've heard about it, what's it like?
dwarf
I was also instantly hooked. It's a fantastic show, even if a lot of it is style over substance, the character relationships are good and the contextual irony is awesome and yet understated at the same time. I know you didn't directly compare it to The Wire Grunch, you're better than that of course, but I think this achieves exactly what it sets out to do: stylish entertainment. I'm mid-way through season 4, on le borrow. I forgot how much I missed it. I think one minor issue I have is that I think Don should've developed a bit more by now, if anything it's him that seems a bit one-note. That's half the point, but still. McPhee
Visually it's stunning, and the relationships between the characters are pretty well done, but overall I found it a bit 'Meh'. It's just not really my thing. I watch it because it's entertaining and visually stunning, it's never going to have me hooked like a lot of other American shows have in the past few years (BSG, 24, Supernatural, Band of Brothers. The Wire and The Sopranos are on my 'must-see' list). It's kinda like Desperate Housewives, only not quite so vomit-inducing.

The thing with Mad Men is that there's just so much that's implicit rather than explicit and all the character development is done in the subtext that it does all seem a bit shallow at first. I enjoy the hidden depth to it all though, and of course that shallow flashy exterior is a perfect metaphor for the ad business.
dwarf
Yeah I agree with you, a lot of it is figurative, which is what sets it apart from your standard soap, or even the Desperate housewives example. You get more shots of static scenarios, or panoramas of a setting which clearly hint at being more than what you see at face value. It's always tres gripping. Gonna watch an ep now in fact. Edit: Also, the music is awesome. Gonna have to find the soundtrack/featured songs. Favourite time period/context tbh Edited May 11, 2011 by dwarf
dwarf
Season 4 absolutely blew my socks off. I think seasons 1, 2 and 3 were largely similar in being extremely high quality but by fuck was this something else entirely. I'm not in the mood for explaining why right now, but it's quite possibly my favourite season of any TV show. Offered so much.

It's just the perfect evolution of the show. The plot is more compelling, the developments more exciting and the relationships are better crafted than ever. Don and Peggy, particularly, are fantastic. In fact, Peggy on her own is probably my favourite character in anything ever now. Yes.
