Ryuk Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 on March 26 1997 Members of the Heaven's Gate cult in San Diego believed that the appearance of the Hale-Bopp comet in the spring of 1997 portended the arrival of a spaceship. This craft was to begin the destruction - or "recycling" - of the Earth. To survive the coming apocalypse, cult leader Marshall Applewhite (pictured above) ordered his small group of followers to leave their "flesh bodies", so that their souls could board the UFO. On March 19 he recorded a video message proclaiming that mass suicide was "the only way to evacuate this Earth". Seven days later police found the partially-decomposed bodies of 38 Heaven's Gate members, plus that of Applewhite, in a rented mansion. There were no reports of the simultaneous arrival of a spacecraft. I was wondering what are your opinions of people that perform a suicidal act because of a religous leader? Why do they do such an act?
EEVILMURRAY Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I was wondering what are your opinions of people that perform a suicidal act because of a religous leader? Why do they do such an act? They're impatient fucks. Why can't they wait until they die normally, or at least until this UFO arrives. This is assuming that Applewhite neglected to mention a limit time window to join the aliens.
The fish Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 They're gullible people following either bastards or even bigger idiots (and they're sometimes all murderers), such as Jonestown.
Pancake Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 The only ones i maybe have some sympathy for, are if there are ickle uns who have been brainwashed since birth. The rest of them are twats with not enough self-respect to have a mind of their own!
chairdriver Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Well life is only what you make of it *shrugs*.
Brian Mcoy Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Mcoy dosen't care so long as they are a cheap funeral. Mcoy dosen't see the point in mourning those that are dumb enough to commit suicide over something like that.
Ashley Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Read somewhat around the Aum Shinrikyo incident but then in situations like this you can't really say "they're all stupid/brainwashed/whatever" because at the end of the day they're all individuals. Whether you believe them to be by the end of it they were when they went in. Still, Murakami did some interesting interviews with ex members. And Destorying The World To Save It is an interesting book about it with an awesome name.
