Drilling into the data, we see prices were down 16 percent for console hardware; flat for console software; and up for all other categories. Lower prices exacerbates decline in dollar sales for console hardware, so while unit sales down only 5 percent, dollar sales were down 12 percent due to declining average retail prices (ARP). In terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008. HARDWARE: Wii experienced its best non-holiday sales month (hardware) since March 2009. Compared to February 2010, on an average sales/week basis, Wii is the only hardware platform to increase sales velocity over February. Looking at Nintendo DS sales, March 2010 marks the first non-holiday month the platform has broken the 700K mark since June of '09, and was the top selling platform across consoles and portables for the month. Sony's PS3 hardware posted its eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increases. For the first time since its launch in the U.S., the PS3 has four titles in the Top 10, and was also the leader in console software sales. SOFTWARE: God of War III (GOW3) bested the introduction of God of War II (GOW2 - 3/07 PS2 launch) by 32 percent. Thanks in large part to its multi-platform launch on Xbox 360 and PS3, Final Fantasy 13 is the best launch for any item in the franchise. The next closest was Final Fantasy XII, a PS2 exclusive, which launched and sold 896K units in Nov '06. FFXIII sales in its introduction month were 48 percent greater than that of FFXII . In its first month of sales in the U.S., Battlefield: Bad Company 2 bested the launch of Battlefield: Bad Company by +170 percent. Even considering that the first was launched later in its introduction month while BC2 enjoyed nearly a full month of sales, the increase is impressive. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the second-best-selling game of all time, after Wii Play.
Guy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Nice to see some Nintendo goodies in there, especially Pokemon remake-raping a heavy hitter like Final Fantasy. That game is doomed.
Emasher Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Good to see Bad Company 2 up there. I wish they would put different but similar SKUs together though.
LostOverThere Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Red Steel 2 was never going to do more than 349.2K copies in ten days, that much is for sure. :p
Dante Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 Red Steel 2?!?! Red Steel 2 managed to sell 50,000 in sales. "Considering that the NPD sales only accounted for 12 days on the store shelves and that NPD doesn't include all retailers we are looking forward to a complete month of sales data to see where we stand." - Ubisoft spokesperson
D_prOdigy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 No Metro 2033 to be seen anywhere. Bye, 4A games.
Emasher Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Just because a game isn't in the top 10 for NPD vales, doesn't at all make it a failure.
mcj metroid Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 red steel 2 as good it is is or whatever is too much of a niche title for most people to take seriously.. cel shaded graphics no multiplayer online or offline needs motion plus to play If it doesn't sell well it'll prob be because of this.
Emasher Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Its bundled with motion plus though, isn't it? Although I agree.
LostOverThere Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Red Steel 2 is not niche. It's extremely mainstream, especially when compared to the majority of other 3rd party Wii efforts.
Dyson Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Red Steel 2 is not niche. It's extremely mainstream, especially when compared to the majority of other 3rd party Wii efforts. How can you say that? You're saying that a western style FPS, the follow-up to a disappointing, poorly received original IP that requires a barely supported (arguably) expensive peripheral is mainstream, and the "majority of other third party titles" are niche? Having worked in a games department in a store I can tell you that the games we sold the most on the Wii usually had the words "Sport", "Family", "Fit" or "Fun" plastered over the front cover. Not games like Red Steel 2 or for example, Dead Space Extraction (now reduced to under a tenner). If the majority of third party titles on the Wii are niche, I'd say that the target niche is pretty damn big.
Emasher Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I'm going to assume he means 3rd party games meant for the core gamer.
Dyson Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 That's a niche all in itself, though, and thus the point is null.
LostOverThere Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I'm going to assume he means 3rd party games meant for the core gamer. This. This. This.
Fierce_LiNk Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Having worked in a games department in a store I can tell you that the games we sold the most on the Wii usually had the words "Sport", "Family", "Fit" or "Fun" plastered over the front cover. Simples. The clever ones buy their games online, or shop around first. Some of the prices for HMV are shocking, you'd have to be a tart to buy from there. Actually, somewhat anecdotal, I popped into the HMV in Newport the other day to buy the Zidane Dvd. 25 fucking quid! I went to one in Cardiff a few days after, as I was in the area, and found it for a fiver in another HMV. Exactly the same edition, the more expensive one wasn't some kind of extreme edition. Some of the prices I've seen in HMV and similar types of stores for games are just...insane. How they can expect people to pick up games for 40 quid is beyond me. It's going to sound like a generalisation, but a lot of these people who pick up the games you mentioned, the ones with family or sport in the title are ones who just pick up the first thing they see. They see it on the shelf and just go with it. How many of us here would go into town and pick up Red Steel 2 for 35+ quid? None. Because it can be bought cheaper in places like Amazon. I hope it was HMV you used to work in, otherwise I look like a fool typing this. Anyways, we're allowed to slag them off as you managed to escape from there.

It did have a multiplayer mode and was even presented to a media outlet. Again, at last minute Ubisoft heads had some concerns about the quality of the title. As we all know, the game completely changed. New engine, new controls, new setting. Everything was scrapped except for the art style.
