Ike Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Firmware 4.2E has been released today. You need to update in order to access the Wii Shop, not sure what else the update does, but it apparently deleted the HBC.
Fierce_LiNk Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Hmm, I guess an update to remove that was inevitable. I don't know much about the HBC as I don't fiddle around with stuff like that. Surely the update has other features, though? There must be more to it than that?
LostOverThere Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 I was really hoping for a Wii Shop Channel redesign. It's so old and crappy. But yeah, Nintendo should just give up on preventing home brew. It's never going to happen.
Emasher Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 There's really no reason they need to even update the Wii to update the shop channel. When the console first came out, someone managed to access it from FireFox (just to browse, not to download anything obviously). So Its most likely just HTML/Javascript/ect.
Lens of Truth Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Flippin heck! When will they stop being so anal? I wouldn't mind, but there are any number of things they could actually improve with an update. Also I need the HBC to play my US Okami, Brawl and I've just ordered Excitebots! Was gonna buy Ys Books I+II this weekend as well... guess that's out the window now.

Lens of Truth Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 I know, but I wanted the Turbografx one on the VC.
Ike Posted September 29, 2009 Author Posted September 29, 2009 I know, but I wanted the Turbografx one on the VC. Oh right, forgot about that one. I thought you meant the DS one X_X.
or else you will DIE Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 (edited) I know, but I wanted the Turbografx one on the VC. fuck them. don't download the update- just download the rom and Hugo-Wii for the homebrew channel. Edited September 29, 2009 by or else you will DIE
Shino Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 LOL, what were you guys expecting? The day someone decides to put HBC it should have considered the eternal mouse chase it would be with Nintendo.
mcj metroid Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 when will this update start coming with games is when I want to know?
or else you will DIE Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 probably with NSMB? thats the only "big" game coming out soon i think lucky for me the one and only game i am waiting for is Metroid Other M, so i guess i got the HBC for another 8 months or so. and by then there will probably be a way around it.
Josh64 Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 probably with NSMB? thats the only "big" game coming out soon i think lucky for me the one and only game i am waiting for is Metroid Other M, so i guess i got the HBC for another 8 months or so. and by then there will probably be a way around it. Can you not play new games using the back up launcher? This usually works for me!
Mokong Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Ah bloody hell... well I have no need for the WiiShop Channel at the moment, and am pefectly fine to not use it anymore, I'd prefer to keep my HBC. Incidently 4.2 also disables the Bannerbomb hack, however there is another hack called Indiana Pwns using LEGO Indiana Jones which still works and you can use to install the HBC with that on 4.2, I however don't have that game so I'll stay on 4.1 thanks. There is another hack called Smash Stack which uses SSBB, but only works with US Wii's I'd assume it won't be long before a new version of Bannerbomb comes out that works with 4.2 or Smash Stack is made to work on other regions also. Nintendo should leave the HBC alone or at least bloody allow the Wii to do a few things that Homebrew does, then we wouldn't need homebrew. Probably unlikely I guess but do we seriously still need region-locks? And maybe Nintendo could provide a proper video file player, ok the Photo Channel does play video files off an SD card... but it SUCKS, it only plays files that are in one specific format. Where as with the HBC using MPlayer CE you can play pretty much any video file AND play them from an external harddrive via USB, if homebrew can do this why can't Nintendo?
mcj metroid Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Can you not play new games using the back up launcher? This usually works for me! do updates ever come up when using the backup launcher? if so can you skip them. as far as i know it goes straight to the safety screen and stays there no matter what game?
LostOverThere Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 There's really no reason they need to even update the Wii to update the shop channel. When the console first came out, someone managed to access it from FireFox (just to browse, not to download anything obviously). So Its most likely just HTML/Javascript/ect. Exactly. The only reason you can't access it via Firefox any more is because the site does a browser check to make sure you're visiting it via your Wii. It would be dead easy for them to redo the channel with a bit of nice CSS here and there to establish something that looks half decent. Does anyone know if the new firmware fixes the Conduit hacks? Just a thought...
Dante Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Changes Deletes the Homebrew Channel and DVDX. Now uses IOS70. Wii Shop Channel updated. Use WiiSCU or Wii Shop and IOS61 installer to update the shop channel. Most of the IOS's have been updated or stubbed. Updates your boot2 to boot2v4, overwriting BootMii/boot2. Wii Menu 4.2: a lack of imagination Patching the System Menu is absolutely completely unneeded. I repeat, there will be a fix out in the following day or two, one that simply involves updating HBC/BootMii using a new installer, without any patching or manual updating nonsense. Enhanced system menu — now with a new iplESMisc.cpp::DeleteTicketsForce function that runs after verifySavedataZD, upon every boot of the system. In addition to looking for the Twilight Hack and deleting it if found, it will now look for title-IDs DVDX and HAXX (the latter being the Homebrew Channel) and delete them if found. Updated boot2 — All Wiis that shipped with boot2v2 or boot2v3 (the first 30 million or so) will have boot2v4 installed. There’s no behavioral difference, here, but it will wipe out BootMii if it is installed as boot2. Updated IOSes — updated versions of IOS9, IOS12, IOS13, IOS14, IOS15, IOS17, IOS21, IOS22, IOS28, IOS31, IOS33, IOS34, IOS35, IOS36, IOS37, IOS38, IOS53, IOS55, IOS56, IOS57, IOS60, and IOS61. A new IOS70 is installed for the new System Menu to use. I haven’t looked at the changes in any depth, but they seemed to have fixed the IOS exploit we were using in the most recent HackMii Installer. Updated BC, MIOS and IOS254– I’m not really sure what the point of this was, but they probably just rebuilt everything to be safe. They could have used the opportunity to try to overwrite BootMii/IOS, but they didn’t (the version number is lower than that used by BootMii, so it won’t install). New stub IOSes installed as IOS222, IOS223, IOS249, and IOS250. This seems to be the only effort made to remove “unauthorized firmware” from the Wii. This may or may not actually work, depending on the version number used in the TMD of the already-installed version of IOS. Updated shop channel — this was probably just a routine update of the shop channel, and they probably stopped allowing the older (4.1) version of the shop channel to connect. This is the only actual “carrot” to entice you to update.
tapedeck Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Ironic that on the day this is released a really good N64 emulator gets released which plays a fair few N64 gems like Banjo 1 & 2 and ISS - Still, the holy grail of Goldeneye remains elusive...
Mokong Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 And it's been fixed New version of HBC is out, if your on 4.1 with HBC installed just turn it on and autoupdate to the new version, if you want you can then update to 4.2 and HBC will then remain (Nintendo's "fix" for it appartenly was an easy work around... all they had to do was change the HBC's file name but there's a fair few other updates to the new HBC too) Bannerbomb still doesn't work but new version is expected soon as again the way Nintendo "fixed" it was a lazy method easily worked around Incidently apparently the coding Nintendo went and did for the 4.2 update was so buggy in itself that some people who have updated had their Wii's bricked... even if they didn't have homebrew installed... so I guess you should also update with care anyway... I think i'll just stay on 4.1 for now and wait see what happens with 4.3

mcj metroid Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 apparantly the new update also fixed some slight on-line glitch in the conduit.......Ya I don't care either. but nice to know nintendo are idiots. I mean at this stage why bother. They're making a fortune off the wii and it's far too late to change things now. Just make sure they make the next console almost unmoddable like the ps3.
LostOverThere Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Wait, Conduit fixes? Finally! Some good news!
Emasher Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 I really don't want to have to send my Wii back to Nintendo a second time. Even though I don't even have the HBC installed, I think I'll stick with 4.1 until perhaps I'm forced to update with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
