EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I do hope not, it had so much more life in it. The input to the monitor cut off randomly, but I could still hear the music, so I reset it. Now only this happens during "startup". You see these Game Genie images and then the input to the monitor cuts off once more. I tried entering my password to see if it would start up out of eyesight, but no luck. ... And they were never heard from again. HELP ME PLEASE!
S.C.G Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 It could be your graphics card seeing as you're getting all that random graphical glitching on the screen.
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 It could be your graphics card seeing as you're getting all that random graphical glitching on the screen. Does that mean it's time for a replace? If so, does that require a format and if that be the case, would it be better to get a new PC altogether? I've had it for about... around 6-7 years I think.
Nolan Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) The Artifacting suggests that your card is dying/overheating. As for the picture cutting in and out, I'd suggest playing with the cord and making sure the connections are good. In my experience even a overheating card doesn't stop sending the signal, it just sends a dirty signal. Edit coming. Edit is here, Getting a new video card won't require a reformat, just cleaning out the old drivers (if they went to a different brand of what you had previously) installing the correct drivers and going from there. Being that your PC is 6-7 years old though, it may be better to get a new one. You may even still be on AGP which would really limit Graphics options as opposed to a new PC. You'd also be able to come into the world of Dual Tri or even Quad core CPUs too. A bump in RAM to DDR2. Edited July 6, 2009 by Nolan
RoadKill Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'd guess the fan on your graphics card is fucked and the chip has overheated.
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 We had some good times... Is this any good? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-187-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= I'm in the need to be cheap, and this seems Ok? I seem to have lost my XP disc, so I'd have to buy an operator disc, but with everything evolving as it is... it might be better to get a ... Urgh ... Vista disc.
fex Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Try your onboard gfx and if everything loads then you know everythings a-okay apart from your GFX card, then just buy a new one.
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 I'm sorry, I'm pretty much PC illiterate, how would I go about activating the onboard graphics card? I assume I must remove the other one?
S.C.G Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'm sorry, I'm pretty much PC illiterate, how would I go about activating the onboard graphics card? I assume I must remove the other one? You'd need to open up your PC and see what ports you have spare, if you have an unused PCI-express slot - or whatever the standard is these days - then you'll need to buy a new card, slam it in there, attack the monitor cable to the new card and it should disable the onboard graphics automatically and default to the newly installed card.

As long as you don't plan on playing any games beyond the occasional flash game that is an excellent choice. Good CPU and RAM, I would suggest just eschewing an OS and installing the free Release Candidate of Windows 7, but if you're PC illiterate, I'd suggest going for Vista Home Premium and using the Win 7 upgrade voucher they'll give you. PCI-E x16 is the standard now, but his PC is old enough that it may have AGP as his standard. As old as his PC is, it makes more sense to get a new cheap one. Other than graphics even the crappiest PC on the market now will be better.

Is anything on this cheapskate section decent for some gaming? Or is there a better site I could get something sexy from? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=1078 I wouldn't call myself PC illiterate, just the technical shit illiterate. Even though my knowledge fails in comparisson to many here on how some programs work, I'm still revered as the master here. I know. It worked for me, but if i plugged in another monitor cable to the old port i should be able to run 2 monitors off the same PC. Yes, it does seem to be the graphics are buggered up from the screens.
MoogleViper Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 How much money do you have to spend? If you bought that first computer and stuck a £60-£100 graphics card in then you'd be able to play some decent games. Although this one and a graphics card will be better. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-174-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat=
Nolan Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Well I didn't mention it because I didn't know the budget, but this would be pretty good for gaming. The CPU is great, and the 9600GSO is the equivalent of the 8800GS. You're not going to be maxing out all the latest games, but you'll play with medium high settings depending on the resolution. It's actually basically the same as what you picked earlier but with a slightly slower CPU, smaller HDD, and a GPU added in. Which brings a new point, it's £100 more expensive for a £45.99 Video card. Most of the cheaper video cards in that range seem to be out of stock, but there are some good ones for right about £60-70. Which is still better than the £100 markup. So I'd suggest getting the first system and either putting a 9600GSO in it or, a 4650/4670 from ATI in it. If you really want value, the ATI 4770 is a great card, can be had at about 75. How much money do you have to spend? Although this one and a graphics card will be better. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-174-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= That's mini-ITX, it can't support a video card of any good sort. the only ITX boards I've seen only have PCI slots.PCI is not widely used for graphics. Also, the E7400 performs about the same as the 7750/7850 for about twice the price.

So what I'm seeing is, I could buy the one I mentioned, but then replace it with the graphics card you've just linked, and it should be semi decent and with a bit of a "discount" if I were to get it kinda ready made? I apologise for my lack of technical know-how here.

I would suggest http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1434 one of the 4770s, I don't know anything about the 4730, or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-132-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1274 4650, it's pretty close to that 9600GSO, in price and performance. The other 9600's are closer to the 4770 prices, and they aren't nearly as good cards.
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 So the tightarse special could be something like: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-187-OK&tool=5 £249.99 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-132-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1274 £44.99 I don't think I can stretch getting the upper end price ones suggested AND a new GFX card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-174-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-181-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= Well I kinda could, but I don't really want to go too far into my overdraft than I already am.

I wouldn't suggest getting either of those systems. The AMD one already has the card, at a large markup, and the Intel on is an ITX motherboard which mean it likely doesn't support any worthwhile GFX card. Also, as I said earlier, the E7400 is only as good as the AMD equivalents (7750/7850) and costs much more. Get the 249 system which other than the lack of a GPU is great, and through in a 50 GPU and you'll have a perfectly fine PC, at somewhat of a discount.

Nolan Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Well that's the one I meant. I have a tendency to round everything up.
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Splendid, I'll rape my overdraft even more tomorrow! I extend muchos love to you. Unless this goes tits up! Then I'm going to move you down on my friendship meter.
Ten10 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) Probably already been said but graphics card screwed. Ok it has, was taking forever to load the maaaahssive photos on my crappy ass sky broadband connection. Edited July 6, 2009 by Ten10
EEVILMURRAY Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Not your fault dude, I should remix the settings on my camera, they don't need to be this big. Made the order, should arrive on Wednesday. In theory since it's the GFX which has analled me, I could still use my old Hard Drive? Maybe have it as a secondary HD, or would the fact it's got an OS on it make it unusable like that?
Ten10 Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Would have to be secondary as Xp kicks up a huffing storm if it finds out its in a different machine. If you had an Xp disc you would have been able to do a repair installation which would fix this. But would be time consuming. I would just start afresh especially with win 7 coming out for around 50 quid in a few days time.
