After 12 years of service as Ferrari's test driver, and almost a decade since his last grand prix, Luca Badoer is probably as surprised as many observers about getting a chance to race again as Kimi Raikkonen's temporary team-mate.

 

Felipe Massa's injuries from his Hungarian GP accident, allied to Michael Schumacher's inability to race, have left the door open for Badoer to get at least another grand prix under his belt.

 

Here are 10 facts about the Italian

 

• Luca Badoer's return to F1 means there will now be two drivers in the field who competed in the 1993 season. Both he and Rubens Barrichello made their debuts that year.

 

• Badoer's promotion to F1 in 1993 came after a title-winning F3000 campaign the year before, where he took the crown with four wins.

 

• Badoer's F1 return means he will be the oldest driver in the field - taking over that honour from Barrichello. The Italian is currently 38 years old.

 

• His promotion to Ferrari race seat means Badoer will still only have driven for Italian teams in F1. He has previously raced for Scuderia Italia, Minardi and Forti Corse.

 

• Badoer is Ferrari's longest serving test driver, having originally begun work for them back in 1998.

 

• Despite having competed in 48 grands prix, Badoer never scored a point. His best finish was 7th in the 1993 San Marino Grand Prix.

 

• Badoer's failure to score a point gives him the distinction of being the driver with the most race starts who has not achieved that feat.

 

• His best grid position is 12th, which he delivered for Minardi at the 1995 Hungarian Grand Prix. In the race he finished 8th.

 

• Luca Badoer famously broke down in tears at the 1999 European Grand Prix after his car stopped with gearbox failure as he seemed en route to fourth place.

 

• Badoer's near 10-year gap between his last race at the 1999 Japanese Grand Prix and his return in Valencia is not quite as big as the 10 years and three months between Jan Lammers' races in the 1982 Dutch and 1992 Japanese Grand Prix.

Same as :( I think the entire F1 world agrees with that statement.

 

It's stupid how he's still incredibly fit, it's just his neck hasn't recovered fully. argh. I really hope Bodeur or whatever he's called does really shit to a point where Schumacher CAN race at Monza. Would be epic.

I think Badoer is just a guarantee for Valencia atm, so it's still open.

 

Mind you Spa is only 1 week later and Monza another 2 weeks after that... will 3 weeks make much of a difference to Schumi's neck... probably not seeing as the original injury was done back in Febuary wasn't it?... and it's still hurting him all this time on... maybe he's just geting old!

I dunno, a few teams seem to be liking this 3rd car idea atm...wouldn't be surprised if we see 12 teams with 3 cars each, with 10 of them being eliminated in prequalifying.

I just don't see how there's gonna be room in the current garages for 3 cars...

 

and at a time when teams are trying to cut costs, are teams like Force India and Williams, Brawn etc... gonna want to run a third car?

Running a 3rd car costs very little extra tbh; most money spent by a team goes into developing, testing and wind tunnel work (and we all know how little testing has gone on this year lol).

True, guess they'd only really need a third team of staff/pit crew.

 

Though it would be pretty bad for Force India/The new teams etc... to run a third car when it's almost guaranteed not to make it out of pre-qualifying. Then it would be a hassle/unnecessary expense, because it's a pointless addition for them.

If these 3rd cars do come in. Do you think theres anyway some of the poorer teams could sell off the rights to drive the 3rd car? It used to be done years and years ago. Just a thaught.

In theory the 3 cars a team is a decent one, costs of running a 3rd car are probably not too high in comparison to what 2 cost. Extra sponsorship space, more drivers - I like it.

 

The big problem is if you had to drop say 10 drivers from the race who don't qualify. Chances are you drop all 3 drivers from the bottom 3 teams and one guy who's unlucky. These three teams are going to be out of F1 pretty quickly in this case as sponsors are going to be very unlikely to pay out enough money for their operations.

 

I'd rather see extra teams to be totally honest.

The Spanish press have been running this pay-off rumour all season... and this particular story is linked to The Sun!

 

I'm SO frustrated by this constant rumour it's unbelievable!!

 

Kimi won the WDC for Ferrari in 2007,

 

2008 was a poor year, he started great with 2 wins, then the car was developed away from his driving style (as confirmed by Schumi), and by the time he got the car back it was too late in the season,

 

So on to the 2009 season and both Kimi and Massa's results are a reflection of a weak car and aweful team decisions! Kimi's had 2 mechanical retirements, was running well in Malaysia before the team put the wrong tyres on his car, and like Massa has had one race where because of the team he hasn't made it out of Q1.

Alonso wouldn't be fairing any better given those same circumstances, and I think both Kimi and Massa have both done pretty well with what they've had delt to them this season.

Tbf though, the current Kimi isn't the same one we knew from 2001 to 2005. He was a beast back then. I love Kimi but I'd rather see him go tbh and Alonso to go to Ferrari.

Yeah I agree, he certainly isn't his best at Ferrari.

 

As much as I don't like McLaren, he was practically unstopable their and probably should have stayed with them; bet he would have won the '07 and '08 title (especially as they've fixed the unreliabilty problems that they used to have).

But then after 5 years I guess you want a change, and everyone wants to drive for Ferrari.

If Kimi didn't go to Ferrari, Schuey would have stayed, and if Kimi won the 07 title with 2 DNF's and he made a few mistakes that year, michael would have made it easily I reckon.

 

That said, Kimi in the 07 Mclaren vs Michael in the 07 Ferrari...win?

OMG that would have been EPIC!!... I honestly think Kimi would have taken that one.

The only unreliablity the '07 car had was that gearbox glitch that hit Hamilton in Brazil.

 

Alonso would have been in the other McLaren aswell!!

 

 

I gave up on McLaren when this sort of stuff started happening: :nono:
