LostOverThere Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I look forward to the full review. N-Europe write ups are always so interesting to read
Boomstick Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 In case anyone is interested I have a bunch of gameplay videos that can be found here - http://www.youtube.com/user/ScutFarkas63#grid/uploads
Ganepark32 Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Received this earlier today for reviewing myself. Funnily, the game box still had it's online embargo sticker on it for posting reviews before the 4th of September. God the website I work for is lazy when it comes to reviews. Anyway, have played about 50 minutes or so and there are good bits and bad bits in equal quantities so far. Loving the tension that the game is exuding though. Because everything is abandoned and quite dark (even with the brightness at the top some areas are overly dark and hard to see in), you're constantly on edge as to things that could happen. It's not scary but then I don't think it's trying to be. Anyway, I thought I'd get some time in on it today before having to lock the game away while I study over the weekend. Looking forward to getting further into the game.
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Guys, this is a tenner at Asda and it can also be found at a variety of Online places for around the same price. If I hadn't just bought Silent Hill, I would have bought this yesterday. I think I might finish Silent Hill first and then get this.
Fierce_LiNk Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I picked this up recently after it seeing it for cheap in GAME. This makes it now my 32nd Wii game in my collection. Really like it and I'm finding it hard to put down, which is both great and bad, considering that I've still got a few other games that I'm currently working on. I really like this game, reminds me a lot of Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube, which is one of my all time favourite games. The story (and particularly the logs that you collect throughout to add more to the backstory) is really well told, interesting and told in a distinctive way. The voice acting is of quite a high standard and the characters feel truely alive in this game. I had this down as a 6 or 7 out of 10 game before I bought it, but in actual fact I think it's possibly an 8 or even a 9 for me. Great controls, and I particularly like all the themes relating to Buddhism throughout the game. Its a good survival horror game with a twist. Different, but yet welcoming at the same time. You can probably get this for cheap now. If you're a fan of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii, then this might be worth looking into.
Ganepark32 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Glad you're enjoying it Flink. I do think people should have given this a go. Yes, it has some issues (I found the motion controls to be a bit problematic at times and it's very slow paced so it's definitely not for everyone), but it's a very solid game with a great setting (with some very impressive visuals for such a small developer), a rather unique premise and some interesting ideas and I liked the Buddhist themes and ideas in the game, even if some of them were a bit weird in their portrayal (thank god Deep Silver sent a very informative fact sheet with the game detailing all the Buddhist elements). It was a very enjoyable play for me and made a great accompaniment to Dead Space Extraction, as I got the two around the same time. So yeah, it's dirt cheap nowadays and really, if you have been waiting for an Eternal Darkness-esque title (it's not quite on that level but it's probably the closest we've had besides Silent Hill: Shattered Memories) then give it a go. But remember that it is very slow paced at times.

But remember that it is very slow paced at times. The only time the motion controls had me a bit frustrated was a section where you rotate the controller to start meditating. I didn't realise you had to do it in time with the sounds that you hear. The section before it where you had to sneak up on the ghosts to record their mantras also had me a bit frustrated, until I realised that there were hidden spikes on the ground you had to avoid. It really wasn't clear to see. Apart from that, its a great game. The tiniest of niggles. It is very slow paced, but I prefer that. The pace is probably on a par with that in Eternal Darkness and probably Shattered Memories from what I remember (except the nightmare scenes). I can imagine people possibly feeling bored though or not enjoying the subject matter. Clearly a great deal of care went into this game, though. Its not as good as Eternal Darkness, which is probably in my top 5 all time games. I do think this game lacks the "set pieces" that appear in Eternal Darkness and Silent Hill. Unless I just haven't reached these parts yet. Edited January 9, 2011 by Fierce_LiNk
Sméagol Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I never finished it (yet). I think I stopped right at the end (I assume there is just the one boss character). I absolutely loved the atmosphere, but the controls were pretty crap. I could handlde them, up untill the boss, where I kept dying because I couldn't get behind the rock fast enough or something. And every time you die, you have to get through that area with the ghosts again, they should've had a savespot right before it. But again, atmosphere and level design is amazing. But I wouldn't put this at the same level as Silent Hill. I'll have to give this game a go again some time, but then I'd better restart, as I've lost the feeling for the controls. I remember there was a specific weapon I used most of the time, there was one that has some disadvantage (short range I think?), but could get rid of the ghosts in one go. I never used any of the others anymore, even the newer ones, when I had that one, except for specific situations.

Sméagol Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Can't quite remember, but the character reacted slowly I believe. That, and I had trouble with certain moves with your weapon registering, untill you knew you had to do them in a very specific way. Then it wasn't that bad, but still, in the heat of battle.. Perhaps I just wanted the character to be slightly faster. Or he didn't need to be faster even, I just wanted to control him in a RE4/5 fashion. I believe you can't walk backwards / strafe? Moving around felt a bit cumbersome during battles as far as I remember.

Moving around felt a bit cumbersome during battles as far as I remember. The character does move pretty slow, and maybe a bit more running speed would help. Although, maybe its more realistic the way he actually runs? As he is on a mountain carrying an ice axe...thing and his backpack through the whole game? Hmm. You can't walk backwards or strafe, which would have been helpful. An ability to turn 180 degrees would have been useful as well. So, there is room for improvement definitely.
Fierce_LiNk Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 So, I recently finished the game, and I have to admit that the second half of the game is not as good as the first. It seems to lose that "horror" focus and becomes solely about the story. In fact, the gameplay itself becomes rather repetitive towards the end, which is a shame. However, the story is great and it is worth sticking with to see that through. The only bit that disappointed me was the lack of set pieces, because the game itself probably could have done with some, in some form. It had boss battles, and these were good, but it would have broke things up somewhat. I'm glad that I've managed to play it. In parts, it really is a good game. Definitely worth a look. However, you may find it best playing in bursts, a few hours at a time before leaving some for the next day or so.
Mokong Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 MEGA BUMP I was listening to the radio today and there was some interview with a guy about climbing Mount Everest, which of course reminded me about this old gem so I couldn't resist but give it a go again. Been AGES since I last played it, couple of years at least so I've forgoten most of where to go or what I'm looking for. Played for about an hour and finished the first part in the City... hope I didn't miss any diary notes. It's a shame the devs that made this have since been closed, while playing I was thinking if Wii U did see some HD ports/releases of Wii games I've love to see this made all shiny new again.... or even a full on remake with added bits to make it less linear. But still I'm starting to remember about some parts of the game that happen later into it and really looking forward to playing it again now
