Hero-of-Time Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Just stumbled across this little feature. If you have any interest in the Mother series its quite an interesting read. http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=850 I pray we get Earthbound on the VC, I want to play it so much.
Tellyn Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 That's a great article, I can't believe Nintendo have been such arseholes regarding this whole situation.
Jonnas Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 An article detailing how much Nintendo has ignored the Mother fanbase... It's very bad, really. Even Fire Emblem was shown more love, despite their western fanbase not being nearly as big or determined. Plus, Mother has an American setting. Americans certainly have a better kick out of this world than the Japanese do (something I never get. Mother and Fire Emblem have a completely non-japanese setting, yet are two of the few Nintendo franchises where non-japanese releases have been scarce). About Earthbound itself...I managed to play it (through...questionable means...) and, although the main characters lacked any personality (or good motives) and the battle system felt VERY outdated at first, it's still a nice game. The battles were hard and challenging. Plus, despite looking like an old Dragon Quest game, they had a small twist that made it unique. The only turn-based RPG where quick thinking can benefit you a lot. I just wished that at least some kind of animation for a normal attack was there. At times, it looked like a text-based battle. The graphics were simplistic, but still nice. The music...there were a few nice tunes (although the battle themes weren't my cup of tea). The world and secondary characters were quirky and fun. Certainly the saving grace of the generic story. The overworld gameplay was like an old adventure game (like Monkey Island). Certainly more than what you would expect from a normal RPG. Even though it wasn't one of my favourites, it's still very memorable. It had a unique charm. Mother 3 certainly looks more interesting, and I wish it was localised in the west, someday.
Tellyn Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The first two games were actually fully translated into English, yet they didn't release the first. It would be nice if they released it in Europe.
ShadowV7 Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I think the whole VC thing is a joke so far on Nintendos part. No 3rd party N64 games in 18 months so far, being crabby about the games that go up and Hanabi festival has big gaps.
Hero-of-Time Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 I think the whole VC thing is a joke so far on Nintendos part. No 3rd party N64 games in 18 months so far, being crabby about the games that go up and Hanabi festival has big gaps. Yeah, it started off really well but its fell apart in recent times. The amount of side scrolling shooters on the VC is just stupid, how about some variety?
Shino Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Besides being a disappointing and overall stupid attitude by Nintendo, its even counter productive! Why have 2 characters from Mother on one of Nintendo's best sellers (or even THE best seller) if the consumer doesn't even know them.
Ike Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Besides being a disappointing and overall stupid attitude by Nintendo, its even counter productive! Why have 2 characters from Mother on one of Nintendo's best sellers (or even THE best seller) if the consumer doesn't even know them. Because the main consumers are Japan and they know them. The US did also get Mother 2 (Earthbound), which started Ness. I find it funny that Nintendo Power held a poll on which Virtual Console people would like to see released, which Earthbound won, and was then rated by the ESRB weeks later even though Nintendo Power stated that the results may not influence actual releases. I didn't know both Mother games were translated, hopefully we will be able to get both on the VC soon.
darksnowman Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Nintendo have been idiots with the Mother games. I was fairly hyped for Mother 3 when NMS had the odd screenshot of it, even though I only knew of the game on its reputation- in those pre-Internet days! If I'm honest, I didn't know about this Starmen group. The stuff they have done over the years shows great dedication and Nintendo have been jackasses not to recognise that theres an audience for Mother outside of Japan. The part where it says if they had kept on ringing NoA then stuff had a chance of happening is sickening... seeing as they had only planned to ring them for a week. Imagine if they had continued with it, then things could be different. Its stuff like Mother (and Mario RPG) that the VC is perfect for. There really is no excuse!
