LostOverThere Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Looks quite awesome, I always had a soft spot for the series, specifically Trackmania: Sunrise.
King Hippo Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I know I'll still end up buying this like I did with the DS version, but I yearn for a mode in which you play traditional 3-lap RACES and not just the short burst time trials. I know it's not what TrackMania is about neccessarily, but it would be nice - in a game where virtually everything else is customisable - to be able to choose how you play now and again.

K-project Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Anyone here got this brilliant game on the Wii? I picked it up very cheaply off Amazon recently, and have to say it's yet another hidden Wii gem. It's just about to come out in the US (I think), and if there are any US forumites about, you ought to have a look at this. Everyone ought to. For me it's easily up there with Mario Kart for sheer fun.
nekunando Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 For me it's easily up there with Mario Kart for sheer fun. Mario Kart Wii has lost an awful lot of its appeal in recent months I just don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as when I first got it on release day. For me, Mario Kart 64 is still significantly better.. As for TrackMania, I haven't really had much of a look at the Wii version.. and certainly not recently. I played the DS version very briefly and it just didn't suck me in and felt a little bland so I don't really feel any desire for the Wii version.. I'd much rather see ExciteBots get a PAL release..
RedShell Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Mario Kart Wii has lost an awful lot of its appeal in recent months I just don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as when I first got it on release day. That's because you've not joined us in the N-E league, come and take part in one of our 12 player classics and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it again... That, or you'll have a heart attack.

Fierce_LiNk Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I'm more likely to put my fist through the TV from how random and frustrating it can be I haven't played too much of the game. I don't own it and there's too many other games that I want (plus it's still full price). But, the more I play of it, the more I do grow to like it. It is very random, the tracks are somewhat difficult to get used to and it can seem quite an unfair game. But, it can also be pretty great fun. This looks pretty fun. Some of the videos I've seen have made it look like an ExciteTruck-lite. Two questions: - Is the game online? - How do the gameplay mechanics work? It looks like its simply time trials, but are there 2/3 lap races at all in this game? If not, does this make the game too short?
darksnowman Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 - Is the game online? - How do the gameplay mechanics work? Even just for sharing tracks. Yeah its basically a time trial game. The other vehicles are ghosts, so you can drive through them, just like a time trial ghost in Mario Kart or Ten Eighty. The stages are sometimes a straight race to the finish or are lap based - it makes for good variation.

darksnowman Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 When you say lap based, what do you mean exactly? Multiple laps until the race ends? Yep. Its not strictly racing as we normally think of it. I put the DS version on there just to refresh my memory. You select a terrain (stadium, desert, rally) then your track. Before the race starts you pick bronze, silver, gold or all. This decides what AI ghost you are against. If you go for all that means its a four vehicle race. The aim is to beat the gold time and get a gold medal. You earn currency to buy new skins for your cars, new races and new parts to create tracks with. During a race you can press Y to reset you to the last checkpoint, though the clock keeps counting so its not much help and theres a full race reset with a press of the X button. The speed you can reset with is what makes it addictive. I can't find a video review from a decent site but here's a fan made one for the DS version: The game isn't actually as choppy as their footage looks. Its incredibly slick and smooth for a DS game.
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 That's some excellent information there, thank you. This seems like a new age Micro Machines game. I'm really tempted, but also skint at the moment.
daftada Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I have a spare copy if you want it? It's unopened, I'll take £10 for it with p&p included!
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I have a spare copy if you want it? It's unopened, I'll take £10 for it with p&p included! Don't...tempt me, Frodo. I have a ton of games I need to get through at the moment, plus I'm trying to be good with money. So, I'm going to have to decline the offer right now, thanks. Although, I hope somebody else does take you up on that. A tenner seems like a good price.
daftada Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 No probs - I understand hpw painful it is having a pile of unplayed games! For anyone that is interested in this game, I got mine from Asda for £11, might be worth checking them out.
yesteryeargames Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I have the wii version, whos up for some weekly racing ?
K-project Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 This game is phenomenally addictive. The short races make it a "no, I can get it this time" sort of game, and that makes it very compulsive. It's really worth getting hold of imho, especially at the low price you can get it for now. I think it's up there with Excite Truck personally, and is very well suited to the Wii. Gotta be careful - I've just got this and ordered Sin and Punishment 2 for about £16 off the Hut. The missus will go crazy if she knows I'm spending on the Wii again. I'm wanting to put some time into Little Kings Story too, so my next few months will be tied up with some great Wii games. "I don't care if you want to watch Corrie love...."
darksnowman Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 For anyone wanting to read up more on Trackmania for Wii, Gamespot have their review up: http://uk.gamespot.com/wii/driving/trackmaniawii/review.html
K-project Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 7 is a bit harsh. It's a fantastic game, there's no doubt, and masses of old school fun. I agree the music is a bit repetitive, and doesn't help when you constantly restart tracks trying to grab the gold, but it's part of the deal and I love it. I mean, I'm usually the sort of gamer who turns off a game when it gets tricky, but the tightness of the controls here means you'll never feel cheated by the game, and it all comes down to your skill. You always feel that you can beat the tracks, no matter how tough they might seem at first. I'd definitely say to use either the classic controller, or the remote plus nunchuck option. I use the classic myself, as it just makes sense for this particular game. It's all about tight turns and clipping corners to take pole position, and I don't think the 'remote as a wheel' option does justice to that. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any Wii gamer who loved Excite Truck. Just brilliant. I've already played it more in the two weeks of owning it than I have the few years of owning Mario Kart. And there's hundreds of tracks, not dozens as the review claims. I'm on about 180 or so out of about 470-odd.
