Emasher Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 So I'm planning on buying some sort of sandbox game today. I was thinking about Just Cause 2, but I'm not sure I want to pay the launch price for it, not to mention, I'm not sure I want to spend that much on a game period right now. The other game I was considering was GTA 4, which is less than half the price and even though its generally considered to be inferior to the PS2 GTA games, I haven't actually played any of them for more than a few minutes (I have played Chinatown Wars though), so I doubt I'll really be disappointed. Is there any overwhelming reason not to buy GTA 4 for $20 - $30ish? (Thats about £13 - £20).
dwarf Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 If I were you I'd be buying the GTA DLC disc pack thingamie. I think they're out on PS3 now, though I'm not sure.

dwarf Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Maybe. I haven't seen anyone on my PSN FL playing it so I guess you're right. I dislike third-person sandbox games anyway.
Emasher Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I didn't realize that was standalone. I might look into getting that instead.
dwarf Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto:_Episodes_From_Liberty_City Here's info.
Emasher Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 It's not out until mid april, I think I'll just go with gta 4 then. Thanks for the advice though.
dwarf Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I know but I don't think its a full price game. It's like GTA IV but streamlined, removing the shit bits.
Dante Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 PS3 Firmware Update 3.21 Quote The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update. In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system. Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available; Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings) Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.
Emasher Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I suppose this was inevitable. Its going to cause a bit of an "Internet Riot" though I imagine.
Aimless Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 It would have been smarter to slip that in with an announcement of a cool new feature, not just throw it out there on its own. Come on, Sony, haven't you seen Marry Poppins? Anyway, I'm indifferent. For one thing I have a Slim now, for which the feature is disabled anyway, but if I was particularly interested in making a Linux box I'd be better off buying some cheap PC hardware anyway. I'd rather have a machine that's harder to compromise.
Gold Panda Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Thanks for help guys. I think I will go for R2, that game suits me better than KZ 2. Both er really cheap now, so I will see.
Nicktendo Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I am trading in Warhawk today, probably for about £3 but I don't care because it's a giant turd... I have no idea what to buy but I'm sure it will be cheap, cheerful and equally shit. Update soon.

The reason they put in the Other OS feature in the first place was to let people mess around with the cell, and hopefully get them interested in PS3 development. Now that lots of developers are supporting the PS3, its just a security risk.

I spent a lot of time on Resistance 2 online, it's definitely a great game if you get into the multiplayer. It's arcadey, frantic, but overall very fun. I think the mistake most people made was playing the 60 player matches, when the standard small DM/TD were much better. Plus I think the campaign in R2 is better than KZ2.
Nicktendo Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Ended up buying Prince of Persia because it was a fiver and cel-shading turns me on. Also got Motorstorm: Pacific Rift which looked pretty decent for £8. I hope they're both better than Warhawk.
Gold Panda Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Wow, great prices for those games. Im thinking about getting MS: PR for online play. Have you tried it yet? Is it any good?

Only had a quick bash on it. First impressions are, it's pretty good. It looks like it has a lot of depth, lots of competitions and vehicles. The physics and handling are good. So is the framerate, but it lacks the excitement and energy of Excitetruck/bots on Wii. I haven't played online yet but I'll let you know if it's any good.
dwarf Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I S-Ranked Excitetruck and I can tell you now that Pacific Rift is the better game. Some of the tracks are expertly designed, and there's tons of skill to it. The cell shaded PoP is supposedly average and really easy.
Strange Cookie Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 PoP isn't quite the classic the original was, but for a fiver it's definitely worth it IMO. The graphics are charming. The (Nolan North-voced, of Drake and Dark Voide fame) is too much... well, Drake, really. Pacific Rift is quite good, but somehow I don't think it quite measures up with the original. Still atleast it's got more variety in the scenery. Never played Warhawk, or Pacafic Rift online. You know me and that competitive online thing jadajadajada... Never liked it, never will. But you can shred some songs with me online anyday! Yes, I suck online.

I'll never forget being in a indepedent games store once and some kid asked if you could install PC games and run them on the PS3 and bloke said "yep because it has a Linux operating system they just work out of the box" Yeah course they do...would really help if games actually ran on Linux properly for PC let alone PS3.
The Lillster Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 To be fair, I'm not really bothered about OtherOS being removed. The thing that rises my blood pressure, are the people that are actually happy about this decision, are these people that desperate for Sony's cock? All fanboys should be publicly hung!
Daft Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I don't like this Geo twat, or anyone who tries to open the floodgates of piracy. The other OS think is a total yawn. I suspect the only people who really use it use it for rendering and there can't be that many of those - unlucky for them but I guess they could always buy another PS3.
flameboy Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Choze said: tried to post earlier as it didnt work. That qore uk version thingy is out on the 8th of April. Price is £8.99 per quarter. First issue gives you an ingame item for Just Cause 2. If its like the US Qore it should be decent. I just hope its well presented unlike that Nintendo video. The extra bonuses should be worthwhile I hope and its cheaper than mags. hmmm I'm not really sure about the pricing. For the same price per quarter I get my Edge subsciption which has its great Editorial content. Obviously there is the video content but is that going to be enough over what I get off other websites. Qore subscribers get free games from time to time and think they did when it started. That's a proper incentive not an in game item.
