Dante Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 The engine used as the base technology for Oblivion, Civilization IV and other games is now heading to the Nintendo Wii. It’ll be the first time that Emergent’s Gamebryo engine will be moving beyond the more powerful PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, as Emergent joins Nintendo’s Third Party Tools Program. A heavily modified version of the Gamebryo engine is used for Bethesda Softworks’ Oblivion as well as the upcoming Fallout 3. Emergent CEO Geoffrey Selzer said in a statement that the Gamebryo could help developers who were “caught off guard” with the Wii’s success quickly jump on the Nintendo development bandwagon. Gamebryo is also being used by EA Mythic for the upcoming MMO Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. More than 200 games use the engine, according to Emergent. www.next-gen.biz

The problem with current Wii middleware is that is essentially Cube middleware (which was based on PS2 middleware mostly) with minimal to no improvement. A HD engine ported to Wii will use the system far more effectively, hopefully.
Kav Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I'm glad to hear of this, about time some devs stop being so lazy when it comes to Wii games!
Konfucius Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Wow that is some good news, we really need an engine completely designed for the Wii though but it's certainly a great leap forward on the right track.
Cube Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Wow that is some good news, we really need an engine completely designed for the Wii though but it's certainly a great leap forward on the right track. Well, Factor 5 said that they could make one.
D-Day Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 ^^ That's right Cube. Well this is a good thing, no doubt about it, lets see what 'glitter' developers will bring to the Wii table as a result. But one thing I really believe is that there isn't going to be a huge turnover tide for the look of the type of things we're already recieving.
system_error Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Fallout 3 Wii .... PLEASE Well it is indeed good news - lets see how the engine will look once it is finished and I also hope many developers will actually buy a licence to use it and not rely on their old SDKs.
dazzybee Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Fantastic. Like people already mention we need new engines, due to peoples surprise with the Wii they have just been importing their PS2 engines (not even Cube engines for the most part) because thats all they have! Now, as some of us non short sighted people predicted, we'll start getting much better looking games as the PS2 games slowly get fazed out! Its looking good guys!!!
Dilli Gee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I don't think it's even technically possible for Oblivion on Wii. Maybe something similar, but not that game.
DCK Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 I don't think it's even technically possible for Oblivion on Wii. Maybe something similar, but not that game.Meh, Morrowind (Oblivion's predecessor) was a game quite comparable to Oblivion, and it ran quite neatly on an Xbox. I imagine if Bethesda tried they could make quite a pretty game from Oblivion on Wii, recreating most of the experience of the HD versions with a nice FPRPG addition of the Wiimote. I doubt that they'd do that anyway, as I don't think Oblivion on Wii would add anything to the game. The most important thing is that this should be an engine that could create far better looking games than we're seeing so far.
