When people buy their shiny new 40" HDTV, they'll want to be able to play the latest blockbuster on some sort of HD disk, they don't want to be faffing around with downloading a film to some hard disk on the computer, taking hours in the process. Plus can you imagine the licensing and usage rights that will be involved with a downloadable film? Won't happen, or might happen but it certainly won't be mainstream.

Around 80-90% of people with HDTVs don't even realise that they need a HD disk.

Plus can you imagine the licensing and usage rights that will be involved with a downloadable film?

I can't see how it would be different to music or TV Shows. Or short films. Or Disney films. Or Paramount movies.

I trust you mean BR?

He means BD. The official acronym of Blu-Ray Disk.

I trust you mean BR? The PS3 is selling shite-ly, I doubt that will make much of a difference. What percentage of people own a PS3? 2%?

Wait until it receives hefty price cuts in a years time. Already shops are stocking more BD than HD-DVD so awareness of that format will increase, eventually leading to adoption of it. Plus Planet Earth is on BD which is AWESOME in HD.

As Cube says. But the peson moaning about 'waiting' Hours for downloads:

1) Eventually Britain will catch up with the rest of the developed world and get fast broadband! (>20MBS)

2) I don't know how long it takes for you to get your Amazon/Play etc. disks delivered but mine take at least 1-2 days!!

Finally I have never seen more than a few HD format discs in HMV/Virgin shops, they don't look like they're catching on too fast!

You can just go and buy one from a shop you know.

1 MiniDiscs were never supposed to replace CDs. That was Sony, there are SACDs which are true CD successors.

2 Digital distribution needs a heck of alot done before it is mass adopted. Blu-Ray sales are picking up as are HD-DVD's.

3 The PlayStation 2 helped DVD's alot, sure it's not the same this time but PS3's and 360's are pushing sales.

Yeah but that'd be stupid as they're soooo much cheaper online!!

Especially when you have to either pay £2.50 (each) to get a bus there, £4 to park, £5 for coffee and a cake etc...

Just because you don't go to buy DVDs in the shops doesn't mean joe public doesn't.

I doubt digital distribution will take over, 1st you people talk like 20MB is common everywhere when that's far from true, 2nd it was the same with books, and here they are selling better than ever, there's something psychological in having a hard copy of something instead of something virtual.

Due to some questionably influenced retail chains, I think BluRay will win.

People who know about torrents, and the difference between avi and mpeg may be up for downloading films online, but not my mum or dad, sister or her boyfriend who quite like the idea of going to the shops and picking up a real physical product.

I certainly wouldn't want to download films.

Whichever one drops they're players to reasonable (sub-£80) levels first. TBH im predicting Blu Ray at the moment, there seems to be a lot more buzz about the format

It already is. LOVEFiLM, iTunes, Xbox Live and many other services already offer movie downloads. They will really start to take off in a few years once our internet is up to speed and HDCP enabled devices have penetrated the market enough for all movies to both be encrypted and sell

Can I burn a HD quality film from iTunes onto a disk and take it to my mate's house to watch on his tv?

No, you can't. The idea is you won't need to

I think some of you are confused about what "digital distribution" for movies will be. It won't be faffing around with computers, avi films etc. but a separate device like the V+ or Sky box that is hooked up to the internet. You choose the film you want and IT STREAMS :)

I believe Virgin are doing something like this now?

That is the future. Downloads are merely a stepping stone

Books are different, hell I hate reading on computer screens!! But look at music, if you aksed people how they felt about downloading music instead of having CD's 5 years ago, they (including me) would have said no way!! I like having the CD, the booklet etc.

I haven't bought a 'CD' in over a year now. The public will do whatever is cheap and easy.

this is the way ALL format wars are won.

VHS vs Betamax: VHS was cheap = VHS Win

Laser disc vs VHS: Laser disc easy but bloody expensive = VHS Win.

VHS vs DVD: DVD slightly more expensive but really easy = DVD win

BluRay vs HD-DVD vs DD (digital dist.): if you can get a HD film for half the cost of the others in a 'few' hours at the touch of a button. What would you do!!!??
