Zechs Merquise Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Could a new Punch-out title be in the works for Wii? Wii Boxing was an excellent example of another sports game that could easily be made 'more accessible' using the Wiimote. Although it wasn't as accurate as it could be, it is paving the way for future titles of this type. According to recent reports from IGN and N-Philes, could Nintendo be working on an update in the Punch-out franchise? “Punch-Out!!†has once again been trademarked through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Nintendo filed the trademark on April 1, 2005 for service under “electronic game discs.†The status of the name is active as recent as January 11, 2007. Hope remains, but we want to just confirm that is little more than a rumour. However, the mere rumour of a Punch-out resurrection with Wiimote controls is sending the staff into a frenzy. We just can't help ourselves... After reading this I'm really exited about this. I remember the original on the NES. It was awesome, although it was renamed after Mike Tyson's stint in jail.
Kurtle Squad Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Well there are 2 other, I assume big, titles comming out for the Wii aswell, that IGN know about, though they're secret ones.... I assume they're big since Matt has mentioned them, and they wouldn't be worth mentioning if they werent at least a lil big.
flameboy Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 well here's hoping this turns out to be true, loved punch out.... hope that the controls are more like the warioware boxing boss, they feel more solid and with more work I'm sure could be made more indepth... although do wonder how long a game this would be, by modern terms punch out doesn't have anywhere near enough depth to it at all. would it have to be closer to the EA titles in terms of gameplay modes? such as a career mode etc?
Platty Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I think it was inevitable that after wii boxing there would be a boxing title coming out for the Wii taking full advantage of the new style controls. So why not make that a Punch Out title?
scubahood Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 What was punch out renamed to or was that a joke that I didn't get?
flameboy Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 What was punch out renamed to or was that a joke that I didn't get? no it used to be Mike Tyson's Punch Out (I think)...or something then was changed to just Punch Out after Tyson's controversial career went from bad to worse...
Platty Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 no it used to be Mike Tyson's Punch Out (I think)...or something then was changed to just Punch Out after Tyson's controversial career went from bad to worse... Yeah it was Mike Tyson's Punch Out... I prefered George Foremans KO Boxing
thirtynine. Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 My friend was playing wii boxing with me he said if wii had a boxing game like fight night then id buy it just for that. so here hoping.
flameboy Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Yeah it was Mike Tyson's Punch Out... I prefered George Foremans KO Boxing I used to have George Foreman on the original gameboy, was rock solid!
blender Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I doubt it can get more accurate than wii boxing. the wii mote is just too limited Anyway fightnight2 was one of the better cube games and that had punchout
Gaijin von Snikbah Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 There is nothing wrong with the Wiimote. Nintendo designed Wii Sports that way.
4q2 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 The original arcade version was simply Punch-out....Before Mike Tyson was a name. I remember the original in Skegness pier with the double screen. (Oh happy days/10p a credit !!! ) Its nice to see the game 'possibly on the drawing board' again, the only worry I have is if it is modelled on Wii sports boxing, I will be just swearing at it loads cos it is one of those games that just wont respond to my gestures.
Pit-Jr Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I would hate to think that Wii Boxing is the pinnacle of motion-sensing boxing games. Hopefully its been in development for a good while.
Teppo Holmqvist Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 The original arcade version was simply Punch-out....Before Mike Tyson was a name. I remember the original in Skegness pier with the double screen. (Oh happy days/10p a credit !!! ) In fact, there was two of them. Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out!!. Both games ran with same engine, and were released in 1984. PO had following boxers: Glass Joe, Piston Hurricane, Bald Bull, Kid Quick, Pizza Pasta, and Mr. Sandman. SPO had following boxers; Bear Hugger, Dragon Chan, Vodka Drudenski*, Great Tiger and Super Macho Man. Did you guys know that Nintendo was actually planning Mike Tyson's Punch-Out II for NES? This task was assigned to Beam Software. Unfortunately project did lag and first beta versions didn't really meet exceptations of Nintendo. When Mike Tyson was facing trial for rape accusation, Nintendo decided to quietly pull the plug out from the project. Beam Software continued project, changed Mike Tyson's and his manager's sprites, and released game under name of Power Punch II*. It was rather bad game and it was understandable why Nintendo decided that project wasn't worth their money or time. * His name was changed to Soda Popinski in home version ** There had never been Power Punch I
Hellfire Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hajime no Ippo is kind of like it and it's looking pretty good. The question is, will it come out here?

At the time the closest home version you could buy in the UK (Not sure about other territories was Frank Bruno's Boxing by Elite on the Spectrum....Blatant rip off even down to the characters Hajime no Ippo is kind of like it and it's looking pretty good. The question is, will it come out here? Forgot about that one....I couldnt see a reason for it not getting a release, boxing is 'western' enough to consider it seeing this side of the world.

All earlier Hajime no Ippo games have got US release*, because of manga, but the series haven't never been that popular. Latest title was released with budget price of 15 dollars to encourage sales, but I think that the publisher has now decided that Ippo games aren't really worth their time. * I don't remember western name
