I said that I would start the subtle knife...and I have!

2 chapters in.

I love this book already. :)

I think it might be my favourite, but...I dunno! Northern lights is definitely 3rd ranking, all the stuff brought in by the subtle knife is just too great, it's the sort of thing I loved about them, Northern Lights didn't have it so much.

I really love it when fantasy/sci-fi stuff brings up the real world as an alternate dimension. It happens in FMA and in HDM, and it's sheer brilliance! Wooo! Go me and my first spoiler tags. That's what I was talking about loving in the Subtle Knife, the dimensions and such, especially seeing our earth in it.

Personally I think they got worse as they went on. (not to say that spyglass is bad, just that Northern Lights is really good)

And if you like dimensiony stuff, Ever 17 really screws with your head.

Well, maybe worse is the wrong word to use there? That would sound like the last book is absolutely trash. :heh:

OH GOD I HATE YOU SO MUCH YOU DAMN STUPID AMERICANS

Something that has really really grated at me, ever since someone told me about it near 2 years ago now, is the fact the film is going to be called the golden compass. IT ISN'T A GODDAMN COMPASS! I blame it on the Americans, although I'm not sure if it's their fault. I'm just taking my cue from the Sorcerer's Stone. As for the film, I've only just checked out the castlist, a few top names I must say, but it all comes down to whether they can capture the role well. I've never been much of a fan of Kidman, and haven't seen anything much with Craig in it. Never heard of Eva Green, though she was apparently in Casino Royale with Craig.

Well....it was, second was okish, and first was amazing. (I just didn't really like the stuff in the second/third ones, and the "real, modern day" dimension just ruined it completely).

I doubt it. You know americans... even if Pullman is British, it's always their way.

They did with Harry Potter...and that movie was well...er shit, following in tow with the books ;)..., so I'm pretty sure they'll change it for this aswell, nobody would recognise it else (and a nice little lyraism to finish off too :heh:)

Also: In my opinion, the books got progressively better.

I don't know... I still think it won't change name here. From sorcerer to philosopher it's one thing... but from "The Golden Compass"(wich is the worst name ever) to "Northern Lights"(this name rocks)... it goes a long way. Well... we'll see.

Without a shoadow of doubt, as they progressed, the books got better... In the beginning it was just cliché... then came the inovation. This reaction tells me that people like reading the same crap over and over again.

Logically, the name should be the alethiometer, but that doesn't fit with the other two titles as it is only a noun and no adjective, so I suppose the golden compass was some kind of a compromise. Personally, I think that although Northern Lights is a good title, Aurora Borealis would be better.

I think it will change here, that isn't what bothers me. I'm just bothered at the fact they had to rename it The Golden Compass for the bloody americans. What was the reasoning? If it was something stupid like they wouldn't know about the Northern Lights, well, I didn't even know about the Northern Lights before I read the book! Even after I read about it I didn't believe it and checked it out on the internet(sounds really cool though, I'd wanna go see them at some point). I'm quite glad for this topic, it's inspired me, when I beat Zelda later, I'm gonna start reading Northern Lights again.

The logic was that it fits with the other book titles if you call them The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, then there is no odd one out. But The Golden Compass is too weak and inexact a name in my opinion...

  • 2 weeks later...

Slight bump, but it's better than recreating a new topic. Plus, it was only on page 3 anyway.

I'm now up to Chapter 10 of the Subtle Knife. I think its chapter 10.

Will and Lyra have just taken back the Alethiometer from Mr Boreal.

I'm really, really loving it so far. I get to one point, and then I HAVE to read on to find out what happens next. I'm actually finding this game a lot like Zelda: Twilight Princess, because of the whole spectres thing. I dunno why, but it just reminds me of it so much.

I can't keep this book down. Need to read more!

I couldn't sleep yesterday, so read quite a few chapters. Anyway, finished the Subtle Knife. Bluddy awesome!

I cried when Lee Scoresby died. I really liked the guy. I was gutted when Hester said about not leaving him...

Also, the next chapter with Mrs Coulter. Holy Fuck.

Can't wait to read The Amber Spyglass now.
