  1. Bump I just made my purchase. Specs have changed a lot though: Mobo - Biostar TF560 A2+ CPU - AMD Athlon X2 BE-2300 RAM - 2GB OCZ ATI Crossfire GPU - Sapphire Radeon x1950 XTX 512MB HDD - 250GB Samsung Spinpoint DVD - Samsung SATA DVD-RW PSU - Corsair HX Series 520W Case - Thermaltake Soprano Just trying to decide on a monitor, will probably try and haggle Comet's price on the HP W2207 down a bit (currently £230, i've got £200 left at the very most!) The CPU is going to need a beast of an overclock to bring it up to standard, it's only clocked at 1.9GHz. This article gives me confidence though: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3051 EDIT: Grrr! CCL just emailed me to say they can't get my parts here until next Thursday! Gonna have to phone them up and find out why in the morning, i didn't pay for next day delivery to wait a week!
  2. it's the slot inside the computer you're going to have to plug a USB card in to but if it doesn't have one i'd be very, very surprised
  3. Im waiting for the post next week telling us it has no PCI slots :p
  4. I've used it, had Sabayon on my computer for a bit. That was very DIY, apparently Ubuntu is a lot simpler. Im putting Ubuntu on my new computer when it arrives, will probably use it for most stuff providing it's compatible with all my hardware (i had wireless trouble with Sabayon). Check out this vid: Looks the shiz eh?
  5. Which Ballistix? The Geil is probably better value for money, has 4-4-4-12 timings, the Ballistix at that price is 5-5-5-12 PC2-8500 is a waste of money for the time being (although it is coming down in price quite quickly) Go with the graphics card that has the best warranty and RMA (repairs) system Im still convinced you're wasting a lot of money with that power supply, it's built for QUAD SLI! It's got connectors for powering 4 graphics cards. I don't think i've ever seen a spec like that with such an expensive PSU and you are unlikely to ever use it to its full potential Also, heres a review of that motherboard: http://techgage.com/article/gigabyte_ga-p35c-ds3r/8 They say it's crap for overclocking
  6. Nice work! *stickied*
  7. Saw em live at the weekend (V Festival). They did a "secret" accoustic set earlier in the day too which was pretty cool. Didn't see they're whole headline slot, seen em a few times before so i went off to watch Babyshambles in the tent. Awesome gig! Don't think i'll be back at V again though, it's always been mainstream but this year was the worst! The Coral clashed with Snow Patrol and only managed to draw like 500 people! They were 3rd down on the 2nd stage, tis disgusting Credit to them, they played one hell of a set! I ended up in a circle pit with 8 umpa lumpas :awesome:
  8. You're planning on playing games with an X300? Good luck! My laptops X700 struggles with BF2 on minimum...
  9. Toms Hardware charts aren't very good, they don't use the same setup for every test (they can't). There isn't a great deal of difference between the 2 anyway, theres 1 or 2 tests floating around that show a frame or 2 every second on a 30" Dell
  10. Depends on the resolution you'll be running, get the bigger card for 1680x1050 and higher (i.e. 20" screens and up)
  11. My point is simple, with the specs posted above 700W gives around 400W of headroom at peak load! Im getting 334W with this power supply calculator: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine Or 298W with an E6750 instead of a Q6600. A 500-600W PSU would be much better value for money
  12. DDR3 is overpriced at the moment, Crossfire and SLI aren't very cost or power effective either It all looks right, the PSU and CPU are probably overkill though. Quad-Core isn't used much yet, most games and apps aren't even fully Dual-Core optimised yet! An E6750 would be better value for the money You're not going to need a 700W PSU either, certainly not a £130 one anyway! Try a Corsair/Seagate/Targus PSU and save yourself some more cash. Also see if you can get a hold of an 8800GTS, x1950 XT or x1950 XTX. The Pro is a good card, but theres little point in having such a high spec computer with such a low spec GPU (unless gaming isn't a priority?). Is it just me or has building a computer suddenly become very popular
  13. Thats the one im away to buy, should be able to find it a bit cheaper though (or at least i hope i can, £70 would make it the second most expensive component in my system!)
  14. Computer boots, Vista loads up and then theres a delay before the login screen come up. By delay im talking 2 mins! Only thing i can think of is it was something to do with the last update, i installed it and the morning after this problem started happening
  15. What sort of money are you looking at? Im gonna assume <£600 Samsung R86/R87/R88 (same set with cosmetic differences) Sharp RD2E Toshiba WLT68 Philips PFL7562 (don't know much about this set, but it always looks impressive in shops!)
  16. I've been having the same problem, ever since the last update! My whole system seems to be running a lot slower tbh...
  17. Thats good because the Motherboard is no good. It has a FSB speed of 1066MHz, you're CPU has an FSB speed of 1333MHz. It would still have worked (most likely after a bios update) but you'd be effectively overclocking you're board from the off, just to achieve stock speeds! Try the Asus P5K instead, it will cost you more though. The rest of the build looks great!
  18. Did you order?
  19. I know nothing about Naruto, but this is one game im really looking forward to! Easily in my Top 5 for this Christmas!
  20. It depends on the manufacturer. I've seen one that had Half Life 2, Photoshop, Office and loads of other stuff pre-installed. Then again i've also seen computers with nothing useful and loads of bloat (like Quicktime and AOL trials)
  21. My god! Thats one expensive PSU!!!!! Heres how to choose each part: CPU: More expensive = Better. You can't really mess this one up, but there are a few Price/Performance sweetspots. Try the E4400, E6750 and Q6600 (all Core 2 Duo, AMD are budget at the moment). Mobo: Ask on forums and read reviews. Buy the bare minimum from a good series, theres a lot of different versions of every board out there but most people will only need the basic version. Also, check size. You want ATX (as most are) RAM: If it's 2GB and PC-6400 (DDR2 800Mhz) then it's good. There are timings too, the info page will usually have something like 5-5-5-12 or 4-4-4-15 written on it. The lower this value, the better (4-4-4-12 is ideal) GPU: At you're budget it's the 8800GTS, theres no competition. HDD: SATA is faster. Stick to reliable brands like Samsung and Seagate DVD: SATA is better, smaller cables than IDE (not much else different though). Again, stick to good brands. Optiarc (Sony/NEC Alliance) seem to be the best of the bunch. Labelflash and Lightscribe drives will etch labels into special DVDs. PSU: DO NOT SKIMP ON THIS! Of all the components in the computer this is the one thing that can destroy the whole lot! Go for one from a good brand (again, ask around). Use a Power Supply Calculator like this one: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp to find out how much power you'll need or just ask people. Personally i've heard good things about the 520W Corsair HX Series (made by Seasonic), so much so i've decided to go over-budget on my build in order to buy it! Case: Find one you like the look of then find professional reviews. If they give it the OK then buy, if not then find a different case. Asking peoples opinion on these is usually less of a good idea, it's very subjective. It can be usefull to ask on forums about any long-term issues with a case though Try posting on the hexus.net forums, they've been very helpful to me. And try these shops: http://www.ebuyer.com http://www.scan.co.uk http://www.cclonline.co.uk http://www.dabs.com http://www.microdirect.co.uk
  22. It does look pretty sweet! Daewoo are supposed to be very good at monitors I'd wait for Scan to do a "Deal of the Day" on that screen or similar though, you can save a fair few bob. Theres about 50 items a day and i've seen that monitor as low as £110 before
  23. What card is it that you're running Caris?
