Thousands of people living near the sea on the northern island of Hokkaido were urged to flee to higher ground. Experts issued a tsunami warning for parts of Japan - and the Russian coast - after the 8.1-magnitude quake in the Kuril islands, about 1,000 miles from Tokyo. It wont be as bad as New Orleans or anything. They invest in their infastructure to ensure that quakes and waves don't screw up their day to day lives.
