Actually that could all be done very easily. Instead of loading new firmwares perhaps the disc just activates one of many firmwares that are already on the wii. I Think dork may be on to something here :)

So that means the Nintendo factory doesn't have to install one firmware but one for every region the Wii is released?

Now I see :horse:

oh geez, the units are the same in each country, the only diffeence is the software in the unit which determines the region, the start up disc will not determine the region. The only other difference is that we get a power plug with a big fat block in the middle which is actually a step down converter.

I'm just wandering on psp is it possible to install japanese 1.50 on a uk psp? The reason why I am asking this is because, if it's possible on psp to install other firmwares then it might be possible on the wii too. especially if it's an early firmwre version, like the psp was.

Just a thought.

No install needed. It's not like windows or anything, you just have an image you load to the firmware chip. It would take the exact same steps to load 3 firmwares as it would one. The only difference would be that a larger chip would be needed.

I'm still having trouble thinking that the disc would be to install region. If Nintendo doesn't want us to gain acces to other regions - or import - they wouldn't make it that easy, now would they. And even so, what good does it do? I personally think you'll be paying more import costs. And the GameCube was hardwired to the region, not? Why wouldn't Wii have that? Would be simple, they've bein producing these GameCube chips for years now, so... I'm sorry, I just don't believe the disc story here...

So how is that a benefit over installing (I mean, putting in a firmware chip) one firmware for the region is intended?

The "start up disc" is apparently just an introduction to setting up your Wii correctly; not sure if it's meant to be a DVD, or a Wii disc, but it just demonstrates how to set up the sensor bar properly and how to interact with the system.

It is not impossible that it does both though, it's wrong to assume that the orientation video is the only purpose.

-Wii asking for Startup disc.

Just thought this fitted in this discussion.

Soo, in my eyes this is to "set up" something.

Not an introduction thingy.

here's a better one

I hope we find this out when the Wii is out in Jap and the US so they can test this or maybe if a magazine or something tells us what it's for. This adds to the mystery.

Is there any difference between those two pictures?

It would lower production costs. Being able to have one production line would cut out a good number of workers (people loading firmware for each region). A higher capacity chip plus a disk would cost a small fraction of paying workers for every region.

+ I'm sure they will be finalising the firmware upto the last minute. So they can package the wiis in a stockpile and add the discs at a later stage easily. Not everyone will connect to the interent for updates.

nice idea, but a bit too much hastle really.

you'd have to install the US firmware when you want to play/download US games or update the US firmware and then install the Euro firmware everytime you want to play/download PAL games or update the firmware.

It'd probably wreak havok with the internal memory too, so you'd need to store stuff on removable cards.

Personally, i'd just wait until custom firmware comes out and makes the whole thing region free

I would have thought it was more feasable that the start-up disc would hold all the first firmware pieces, such as the shop channel, photo channel and such and such. The development console that Matt at IGN got had no channels except the disc channel, so it would make alot of sense. It would save them development cost aswell.
