It's National Poetry day on Thursday (waits for cheer)!

Our school loves it for some strange reason and I must learn a poem, so I htough instead of looking through a poetry book I'd ask you guys what's your fav poem?! so I can learn it!

Thanks! ;)

hmm we had to do something similar for our second lesson of english literature when i started college. I brought the Raven by poe just because i thought it was so terribly unorignal. My favorite poem however is probably the tell tale heart by poe, except its more of a short story than a poem.

My favourite poem is The Raven. :P

Probably a bit long for you to learn by Thursday though.

If you want one that's easy to learn (and good) you could try "the Sick Rose" by William Blake.

Oh Rose, thou art sick!

The invisible worm,

That flies in the night,

In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed

Of crimson joy:

And his dark secret love

Does thy life destroy.

And that's it. (No longer a copyright, as Blake has been dead for well over 50 years)

Joining the humping of the Raven band wagon. I know all the verses off by heart. I'm such a goon.

I really like this poem, by Simon Armitage. Plenty to analyse, and any poetry that makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise is a winner in my books...

I Say I Say I Say

Anyone here had a go at themselves

for a laugh? Anyone opened their wrists

with a blade in the bath? Those in the dark

at the back, listen hard. Those at the front

in the know, those of us who have, hands up,

let's show that inch of lacerated skin

between the forearm and the fist. Let's tell it

like it is: strong drink, a crimson tidemark

round the tub, a yard of lint, white towels

washed a dozen times, still pink. Tough luck.

A passion then for watches, bangles, cuffs.

A likely story: you were lashed by brambles

picking berries from the woods. Come clean, come good,

repeat with me the punch line 'Just like blood'

when those at the back rush forward to say

how a little love goes a long long long way.

Simon Armitage

nice.

This is someones original work they posted on some poetry forum or something, I didn't take their name, but I rather liked their poem:

A Side of a Star

As the shadows of the winds fly by

I see a star in the evening sky

It looks so happy, so full of glee

But if you turn it over what would you see?

For all you know beond the light

Is a phase of a winters night

Full of darkness and of tears

Of times and fears from many years

Their could be valleys full of pain

That have been left by winters game's

For all you know behind a veil

Is nothing more than a wizards tale

So if you see a star in the sky

Look very closely on both sides

then one day you might see

how a person's true self could be.
