EEVILMURRAY Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Mine. Mineminemineminemineminemine. Fucking. Mine. My all time favourite of the series. I was just thinking yesterday whether to fire up the PS4 so I could replay this, and this comes. Whatever special edition exists, I shall aim to obtain it. However though, with the Switch on its way out in comparison, I may get it on PS5 instead. Either way, I'm a happy EEVIL. 4
Hero-of-Time Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 I was trying to remember which person on here loved the game. Now I know. 1 1
Dcubed Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 (edited) So… it’s a remaster of a remaster then? Graces is alright, but it really is basically just a glorified arena combat game, because there’s precious little noteworthy gameplay outside of its (admittedly excellent) battle system. As an RPG, it’s incredibly threadbare; with glorified corridors for dungeons. Edited August 27, 2024 by Dcubed

I think the story is better than more recent ones, built upon the greatness Symphonia gave us, and as you said, battle system is awesome. If it's glorified corridors you're after though, check out Tales of Arise, I swear some of the single corridors are a longer trek than some of the areas they've got instead of a traditional overworld, and half as uninspiring. My glasses are so rosey I can't even remember if Graces has an overworld map.

Easily my most hated Tales game that I have played. Game just dragged on for ages and a lot of the bosses were damage sponges. 1

I'm not sure what the logic is for the Arise battles, hit for ages then do a special attack, which either drags out the menial battles against weak stuff because of the cutscenes, or chips a little from bosses, which was all hardish to see with all the shiny effects they smacked on too.

The optimistic side of me is hoping it's like Tales of Vesperia where it's 30 outside of fights, but 60 in battles. But then again, they also did the Tales of Symphonia "remaster", so I'm not too hopeful...
Hero-of-Time Posted October 30, 2024 Author Posted October 30, 2024 A new trailer has been released that highlights some QoL changes made to the game. 1
darksnowman Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Everything already been discussed on this over a decade ago, then? Always been under the impression I'd missed out on something fairly special with this, but having now played through it, I'd say it is just okay. When I went to buy ToGfR the other weekend, I was pleasantly surprised it was on the cheaper side like Ys Memoire: TOiF the week before. More of this, please. Then when I started into it I immediately felt like I'd made a mistake—it was so naff that if the opening 3-4 hours were a demo I reckon I'd have been happy enough to take a pass on it. Thankfully, it picks up a little after that and I can look back on the beginning as a sort of charming stage setter. I'm still going to go back for the bonus scenario but it'd have to reinvent the game a fair bit to elevate my opinion of it after playing the main game itself. EEVILMURRAY Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I'm taking my time going through this, working on getting the most out of the titles, something I neglected/didn't understand properly back in t'day. I was surprised by the extras it offered straight away, give yourself x5 EXP from the off... over 1 million gald... ah'mazin. I only took 300,000 gald and spending as crazy as I could. And increasing inventory size On 2/1/2025 at 1:10 PM, darksnowman said: Deplete CC, wait for it to replenish, deplete CC, wait for it to replenish, deplete CC... oh, +2 CC from a dodge, wait for the rest to replenish... But you get so many thrown at you I just put it on auto and let the game cycle through them for me. Being presented straight away with the grade shop took me by surprise. If I totted it up right, it looked like it gives you enough grade to unlock everything from the off. Yeah, inventory space is tight. I had to keep dualising to free up room so pickups weren't going to waste. 9 hours ago, EEVILMURRAY said: I know right? Very tactical, much more strategy to think about than mindless button bashing. Indeed. "Tactical." Well, come clean then. What's so good about Graces anyway?? Can't only be the ice block sliding minigame. I think you just like Richard going Ratatosk mode and the bit at the end under friendship tree when he claps Asbel on the back and tells him courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality.

Urgh, Wallbridge, I think I took less time than I did first time, and was brought to my attention afterwards I forgot to turn the objective tracking back on. Would've saved me much time. I don't know what it is that sets this apart for me, maybe the characters (love Pascal), or the story (albeit a lil samey to other Tales), but the battle system does require more thinking and strategy than just hammering attack constantly. I think I'm not doing as much as the moment because the jobs are trickling through now, I've managed to hit level 5 on quite a few. I feel the dualizing, if not for requests at inns and upgrading weapons, tis a nice form of cooking, although I don't think I've come across a book with a list of the actual recipes of stuff I've been able to make, not just a list of items made. Never bring Ratatosk up again, that game never happened. NEVER I TELL YOU. What could've made it better would be a proper overworld to explore, which Zesteria did an alright job with. I'm only bout 25-30 hours in, sorting out the gun so I can get to Fodra

The underground void area leading up to it looked like it was going to be a maze to get through but either I fluked it or it was a fairly straight shot from entrance to exit. Could have done with an extra character or two to offset Cheria and Hubert, imo. Given an alternative, I'd have dropped Sophie too. Nothing wrong with a small group... but when they're annoying... I'd have welcomed another Malik-style character. Unfortunate that Emeraude just joined as an unplayable character. I just dualised willy-nilly and turned in inn requests if I completed them. Unless I missed it, a way to see the ingredients needed for specific items would have spurred me on to dualise with purpose. The lack of an overworld + decent mapping held it back for me. At one point, I chained Turtlez together to get back to Lhant just to see if it could be done. It could, then I had to do it again in reverse to get back where I'd left off. Would be handy if any Turtlez could just directly take you anywhere you've been. Always seemed to be a lane or boat trip away from Lhant until I did that. I think once you get the tradition JRPG airship trying to do requests is much easier. I don't get though why the unknown desert are is so tough, I haven't been back recently but I tried just before taking on Lambda and I still had to retreat. I had to use the light bottle to get to the ruins, which the enemies inside were much doable. I'm sad I used Pascal to do a puzzle, I thought she was just going to give me a small hint, not solve the whole thing. On 3/13/2025 at 1:11 PM, darksnowman said: Have you seen it out? I was at the top of the Lastalia Shaft, going in circles and I had to take a break because my mind wasn't doing any mental mapping. Did it last night and got to Fodra's core and stopped there. I was going to walk forward and just get to the next save point as it was late, but then I remembered it was longer and decided to hold off. I'm kinda happy I will have some enemies to go through, because I solved that eleth area puzzle beforehand to get one the Tales Tribute Weapons for Asbel, but the stats aren't as good as the other Tales inspired weapon he has.
