Nolan
88? HW was that popular? Ugh. Also the 20 year thing doesn’t fully work if that’s accurate because of Ronald goddamned Reagan in 84 and 80 and also looking it up, Tricky Dick Nixon in 72. (Also yes Bush in 88 had the popular vote as well) Jesus the truly disheartening part that should make any American sick to their stomach is that 43M votes to 35M votes (1980 Reagan v Carter) was a staggering 489-49 electoral college votes. Fuck. 1992 is even worse. 44.9M-33M-19.7M resulted in 370-168-0 Fuck the electoral college, I’m done looking at Wikipedia election results now. Oh yeah it was based on a non-representative sample of 2. If it helps, we also have a dumb electoral system.
Hero-of-Time
I watched the Undertakers interview with Trump. There was certainly a lot of brown nosing going on but it was enjoyable enough to watch. Crazy how much weight Bautista has lost. Dude doesn't look well after shedding it all.
Nolan
Bautista is still like 240lbs still which is wild Of some note this week, and particularly noteworthy in my home state, Eminem and to an extent ICP have endorsed Kamala. I’m not 100% positive about the members of ICP leading up to this but I know Eminem has never actually endorsed a candidate. He usually just releases music against republicans. Can’t speak as to how big an effect this may have with Detroit being typically blue regardless and the rest of Michigan being….honestly a bit of a shitshow sometimes. (Though last general election the state did go fully blue throughout its higher government which was quite significant)
sumo73
In reply to some of the above, should we really be persuaded/influenced by celebrity endorsements of political figures left or right. I find the whole thing a bit cringe. Lastly it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said - 'Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people'. Plenty of things to attack both Harris and Trump on with regards to 'policy' but to reduce it down to how someone laughs (Harris) or drinks water (Trump) is in poor taste. I think celebrities should be able to express their political feelings and I hope they will use their power and visibility to fight for things that would make lives better for others. May not always agree with the conclusions they reach but as long as they're speaking with conviction (as opposed to Musk clearly just hoping to get into a position to have no regulation) I prefer that to those that say "oh no I can't possibly talk politics". Maybe they mean well, but it feels like 'it doesn't affect me unlike you common people'.

However, when any celebrity endorses a certain side they can often alienate others who don't think politically like them. I'm not saying celebrities can't have an opinion but I'm more for them encouraging others the value of voting, that every vote counts and for people themselves to way up the pros and cons of who to vote for themselves. What happens in the USA will often be copied elsewhere, so it's too late to put the celebrity genie back in it's bottle for politics because it's here to stay. Ashley
I'm not a fan personally but I think Swift handled it well when she said something like "make sure you vote, consider the candidates and vote for who you think it's best and for me that is Harris". You've of course got the Trump side then furiously tweeting in the middle of the night, but at least it wasn't the cop out "I'm keeping it to myself". Which brings me to... The Washington Post (and whatever that San Francisco paper was). Clearly just doing non endorsements out of fear of retribution if Trump wins. Which means the owners want to endorse him, they know the readership won't so they just take the cowards way out. There is of course the argument as to whether papers should endorse (and if people nowadays care) but this isn't that. Part of the problem with this conversations is you can have debates about the merits of celebrities or papers endorsing or staying silent but when the choice is this, it just feels different. Nolan
A celebrity’s endorsement shouldn’t be the thing to sway a person but them being able to openly express their beliefs is important. There is a fair portion of the US where speaking against Trump can have a very real effect on your life. The maga cult is real and they’re armed. A group being targeted by ads right now is married women afraid to vote how they feel for fear their husbands might find out. Celebrity endorsements aren’t always about changing minds. And besides if a celebrity is alienating the people that already didn’t align with their beliefs where is the loss in that besides in their own career? Anywho, early voting is now open in Michigan so I plan to do that tomorrow, or maybe monday after work.

Never know, Michigan was fairly purple but a lot of red to it the past decade until 2022 the state went full Democrat control for the first time in 40 years. Which might break this year but well, waiting game. Edit: I just realized I’m a dweeb that double posted instead of multi quoted. I am definitely not at the top of my forum game anymore. Nolan
Reddit is honestly garbage. Anytime I want to do any sort of formatting I have to look it up and then still get it wrong for stupid reasons. Like paragraph breaks will also break italics. I loathe it for more than shit posting
