Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. today announced Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™), the latest version of PlayStation®’s best-selling franchise, will be released in Holiday, 2013. The news was revealed today by legendary Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi at an event held to celebrate 15 years of the 70-million-selling series.

GT6 for PlayStation®3 will bring new levels of authenticity to ‘the Real Driving Simulator’ as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface. A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content. Meanwhile, the game is also set for expanded connectivity with other devices such as smart phones and tablets and increased social and community functions.

All of the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo®5, which has sold over 10m copies since launching in 2010, will be retained in GT6. But notable new additions to the already impressive line-up of historic cars, road cars and the latest race cars, brings the total car list to 1200 at launch, with new cars set to be continually added online. Several thousand aerodynamic parts and custom wheels will be available for almost all cars, and players can personalize their own custom cars in game to the greatest ever level possible.

The UK’s famous Silverstone Circuit will be just one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them brand new. There will also be regular additions of new tracks set to be made available online. The improved course maker function will provide gorgeous scenery spanning several tens of square kilometers including the magnificent backdrop of Andalucía.

The theme of Gran Turismo’s innovative collaborations with partner companies will increase with the inception of GT6. A number of exciting new projects that blur the line between the virtual and real will be announced in the run up to the game’s launch. Not least of these is GT Academy, a collaboration with Nissan to unearth real racing driver talent that first ran in 2008. It was announced during the event that the competition returns for its biggest ever year in 2013, with the entry mechanic set to take place on an exclusive GT6 demo in July.

Other notable partnerships in the development of GT6 have been with tyre manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive. Both companies are active in the commercial car industry and in racing, and they have acted as technical development partners for the game’s new physics engine, for its tyre and suspension kinematic modeling, creating an even more realistic experience for GT fans.

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit. “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!”

The celebration of 15 years of Gran Turismo event at Silverstone included a demo of GT6 featuring the famous circuit. Guests were able to play the game in the familiar circular Gran Turismo race pods before having a chance to take to the real track in cars provided by Audi, Ford, Jaguar, KTM, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota.

Wonder when we'll see some actual gameplay and not some bullshot photo mode screens and replay footage.

There are direct frame buffer grabs with a hacked PS3 for GT5 on places like neogaf. Its still superb looking  I love playing this on my TV, its where the art style makes up for the weak technical prowess of the PS3.

GT5 720p(4X MSAA in 720p) framebuffer grabs: (not GT6)

The PR shots for GT are fakeish looking colour wise compared to the actual game.

Anyhow GT6 is top of my list for console games this year. PD know how to work their magic. Really hyped for Drive Club on PS4 too. The MotorStorm team are awesome.

Gran Turismo 6 demo launches next week

Following on from yesterday’s reveal of the product and pre-order goodies we can expect when Gran Turismo 6 hits retail this year, I am very happy to bring you even more GT news.

Next Tuesday, 2nd July, at 9.00am BST you will be able to get your hands on the demo for Gran Turismo 6. It promises to be a tantalising glimpse at what we will see when the game takes to the starting grid later this year. The even better news is that the demo is free and doesn’t require ownership of any Gran Turismo product.

What’s more, if you are in one of the GT Academy regions* then the demo could also be the ticket for your chance to race for real with Nissan.

The demo is structured as a GT Academy-style driver training concept where you progressively learn the skills required to push very expensive track monsters at full speed round impossible apexes. The course where the action takes place is Silverstone, the spiritual home of GT Academy (and one of the brand new confirmed GT6 track locations in GT6).

In GT Academy regions, once you’ve cleared the earlier rounds you will then have your shot to post your time to the leaderboard and see if you have got what it takes to progress to the next stage.

Regardless of whether you are in one of the GT Academy eligible countries or not, once you have proved your skills and made the grade through the initial rounds you will unlock special bonus content.

The demo will remain live until 31st August 2013, but if you’re in the GT Academy hunt you have until 11.59pm BST on 28th July 2013 to take a step towards a chance of a real life racing career.

Details on the GT6 demo can be found on gran-turismo.com and more news and information on the demo will be incoming shortly, so keep an eye on PlayStation Blog for updates.

New trailer since its not posted here. Awesome music.

I would still prefer a next gen game but damn I am excited for a new GT. I played a ton of GT4 on my PS3 lol and Gt5 is my most played PS3 game. Thankfully a PS4 game wont take that long going by interviews.

Dat grass texture :awesome: /troll

Looking quite pretty I suppose. And it is surprising to see how GT5 aged...It's pretty ugly at 720p even with 4xAA...

Yep the PS3 just cant compete hardware wise with next gen. Doesnt seem like there is much they can do regarding textures. Having said that its impressive that GT6 can compare to an extent. Its still got that photo realism quality that GT games are best at. the modeling gives the next gen games a run for their money. The rest of this years major PS3 games also look good considering the ancient hardware. I'll happily keep buying good PS3 games.

Gt6 itself is very mature. Tons of features and stuff the next gen games are not doing. Dynamic time of day, dynamic weather, dynamic tyre wear, Leaves being brushed up, more tracks than most games car lists etc. Then you got the realism and racing aspects which are unmatched. A mobile tablet app etc. Too many features to list. I am thinking Driveclub needs more time.

There seems to be a lot of fuss at the moment about the microtransactions - in particular the £119.95 car.

However, this following quote from Eurogamer is by far the most important bit of news:

Eurogamer's Martin Robinson has been playing the game and tells me GT6's economy works exactly the same as GT5's, with progression, payouts and car prices very similar.

The car in question is similar in price to the most expensive cars in GT5.
