I've recently started playing this. The characters and setting seems pretty charming but I'm having a hard time getting into the farming.

At the moment I'm two weeks into it and pretty much all I've done is grown some cucumbers. I've found the daily source of honey, too, which seems to be my main form of income.

Does anyone have any tips on the best things to grow and buy in the first season/year?

I thought maybe he hadn't heard about the site. I think it's very useful and have pretty much used it for all HM and RF games in various degrees. It's 100 times better than Gamefaqs when it comes to those so I don't see the harm to inform him if he has more question. It's not like I didn't tell him what I thought/remembered to be the best moneymaker in a game released two consoles ago. And it's not like I told him to frak off. I was helping. You aren't.

It works fine on IE.

You have to ship tons of other vegetables to get strawberries it seems, 100 potatos, cucumber and turnips. Try cucumber in spring, 80 per piece and it regrows. Corn or onion in summer.

Anyway, it is supposed to go slow in the beginning, you start with barely anything after all. But just pour all the profit in more seeds and I'm sure your farm will grow bigger eventually no matter what you sow.

It's a good idea to get the Harvest sprites on side as quickly as possible. They're basically cheap/child labour and they don't have a union or demand dental plans or proper health & safety measures or anything! They're situated just behind the church (I've a feeling you have to get the rear church door unlocked via an event or something?). Give them grasses and stuff like that everyday and they'll soon be willing to break their backs to please you.

I had one to water crops, one to harvest, and another to feed the animals. I think they did better at certain jobs depending on the colour of their funky sprite costumes, and they level up and get better with time & practise.

In the meantime, turnips are usually the cheapest seeds and the quickest crop to grow to get money.

Forage EVERYWHERE, looking for coloured grasses, fruit (grapes in spring?) and flowers which, if you don't put in your shipping box will make good gifts for the townspeople.

Try and get a chicken as soon as poss and you'll have a steady stream of eggs to ship every day by summer, and can hatch spare eggs in the incubator to produce an army of chickens. You can also sell any spare hens, so keep three producing eggs and sell off the spare one, once you've incubated the egg and it's fully grown (takes approx 30 days).

The fishing rod can come in handy if you spend an hour a day (in-game time :) ) fishing in your farms stream.

If the mine is open in spring you can get good income by breaking rocks and shipping gems; using the hoe on bare soil can reveal stairs to go further down the mine and get better items.

Hey, I was just making a (bad) pun. : peace:

Yes, you did. Fogu --> fog-u --> sounds like... ;)

Atleast you're on my wavelength!

Are the Harvest Sprites useful in FoMT? I remember they screwed me over in the Gameboy Harvest Moon and I was sure never to employ their help again. I thought it was a great concept - for them to be able to run your farm while the game is switched off - so I enlisted them and waited for the money to roll in.

Except, disaster struck.

I fired up the game to see what awaited me and all my well cared for cows were sad.

The pains I'd been going to to feed those cows, clean them, milk them, walk them (was their anything else?) every single day just for those sprites to mess it up. I was trying to have a perfect year to see what my reward would be. Lazy sprites. :nono:

They helped me, but maybe cos they were in fear of being hit by my lvl 3 hammer...

Lol! I'm talking about the Gameboy Color version of HM anyway, so maybe they changed the mechanics for Friends of Mineral Town? Or maybe you don't care about your cows happiness. :heh:
