flameboy Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Couldn't find a thread on this and after watching this episode of the Totally Rad Show, http://revision3.com/trs/onmyradar_2-22 I have to say I want it! Described as a mix of CoD and Half Life sounds too good to be true! Due for release on March 18th on 360,PC and PS3 Homefront is set in a near future America in 2027 when a nuclear-armed Korean People's Army invades the USA. The game is written by John Milius, who co-wrote Apocalypse Now and wrote Red Dawn. The beginning gameplay is reportedly set in Montrose, Colorado.[4]One of the major portions of the story arc is built around not only the growth of the North Korean forces over the years leading to the year 2027 (the year in which the game takes place), but also the economic downfall of the United States of America, and the unrest that seems to grip the nation before the invasion.[5] Homefront is speculative fiction, set in a near-future, post peak oil world that features a significantly declined United States, and a united Korea that has built a massive alliance in East Asia. The Gate Corporation (a major private military company) also plays a minor role. The game focuses on the collapse of the United States, subsequent occupation by the Greater Korean Republic - a united Korea under the rule of North Korea - and the American Resistance that fights said occupation. The player is invited to join the American resistance, "using guerrilla tactics, commandeering military vehicles, and utilizing advanced drone technology", but the player may join the North Korean Forces as well but only in multiplayer matches. The game will also feature vehicle based 32 player online warfare using dedicated servers.
The Lillster Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Haven't we got enough shooter franchises? - Guess not.
flameboy Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 even one thats apparently trying to offer something different?
bryanee Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I pre-ordered this last week. I've been looking forward to it for some time.
Murr Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 It's from the guys that made Frontlines isn't it? I thought that was a nice change from the other FPS's out at the time. Really looking forward to this.

Choze Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Game is out soon. Worth reminding people. Its all about the multiplayer.
flameboy Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 I've added it to lovefilm list. I will play the single player to see what it does doubt multiplayer will hold my attention tho what with killzone being out.
Nolan Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Downloading now. I bought Metro 2033, and for an extra $10 pre-purchased Homefront on steam....Or was that the other way around....
Sméagol Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Hmm, the multiplayer videos I watched looked pretty cool to me. I'd buy this if I had the money. Single player apparently is very short but good.
Nolan Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I played about an hour of the campaign. I like it thus far. I can't say it's too special though yet. I hopped in to check out multiplayer, but I jumped into a match that ended pretty much right away and I didn't want to hang about waiting for the next map so no impressions on that yet.

Done the Brink beta(speechless...). So interested in this as its the odd one I have not tried.

Sméagol Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I'm interested as well, but it probably deserves its own topic..
flameboy Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Just got email off lovefilm to say this is on its way. If its as short as people make out I will likely finish it over weekend
Choze Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I played some online. Not tried single player. I reached rank 5 but can not do more as you have to pay for an online pass(Lovefilm rental). I find online quite fun so I will try it abit more. Right now the game needs patching badly as it's quite rough. It will likely get discounted anyhow. The game looks really ugly. 32 players and worse than MAG... but its fun and that is what counts. I can't say the Crysis 2 online demo was fun in comparison. Also Homefront does not have a completely useless matchmaking system.

In places some of the textures are awful and in single player even had character models seemingly render as they talk to me. I'd say in parts it looks like the original half life.

As i said i may pick it up later once its patched up. The game needed more development time. But its hardly exclusive to Homefront. Crysis 2 has even more serious issues such as not being to connect at all and 'constant' slowdown like an old PS1 or N64 game... along with the worst matchmaking I have ever experienced. That is saying something given how many fps I have played. Not to mention other issues that have lead to pulling the demos and no PC review copies. Reminds me of Black Ops only much worse. The whole anti rental thing funnily is preventing me from wanting to buy the game as I can not truly try it out. At least block people at a higher xp level so we can have a better idea of how good it really is. I can tell mutiplayer is not bad at all but it shows how anti second hand systems do not work.

Also though we have both said all what we dislike about Homefront. It's still THQ's most preordered game ever, apparently shipped 350k first week in the US and was number 1 in the UK charts. Although if you look at the reviews prior to launch they were of course more favourable (magazine scores hovering around the 80% mark) than those after post launch embargo. It's whether all these poor reviews impact on the game long term success. I just think its a game of another era. So many of its mechanics are tired to the limitations and design principles of games of old (PS1-PS2 era) The single player is heavily scripted which impacts upon any sort of freedom you have. For instance their is a stealth scene where all element of danger/risk is removed by you simply having to follow an AI ally and being told when to shoot and who to shoot. Also one final gripe is the game was so immersive in keeping you in the first person view throughout and then towards the end just randomly take you out of that view for the most random things that it needn't have done.

Single player may be junk(not played it) but online is good. I am just upset at shitty matchmaking and general roughness of the game. I will come back to this after the online matchmaking issues are patched. It needs help badly. In the meantime I have KZ3 to play.
flameboy Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 Interesting article on Homefront's single player and lack of player agency etc... http://www.gamefront.com/dear-homefront-can-you-let-me-feel-important/
